#44 - Ryan Innes - Former Star of NBC's "The Voice" Shares His Journey to Releasing His Debut Album "The In-Between"

Listening to the soulful voice of Ryan Innes, it’s natural to assume the bearded crooner has always dreamed of being an artist and performer. It’s hard to imagine that the former contestant and fan favorite on NBC’s The Voice almost never pursued his passion for music at all.Growing up in tiny Thatcher, Ariz., Innes was raised in the traditional musical environment of a small town. As a youth, he was classically trained on piano and sang in the Phoenix Boys Choir and local church musical groups. Although he enjoyed performing in these settings, the traditional and classical music didn’t quite connect with him on an emotional level. It wasn’t until he was introduced to R&B that Innes began a deep and personal involvement with music that would begin to change his life.Although Innes continued to develop a connection with music, he never gave a serious thought to pursuing it until a period of great personal tumult in 2003 caused him to reexamine his life goals and aspirations.“I was 23 years old, and a lot of things happened that made me take a look at my life,” Innes says. “I had just finished a pre-med degree and realized I didn’t really like science that much. On top of that, I was going through a broken engagement that caused me to take a step back and examine things. Music really became my outlet during that time and gave me a new perspective on what I wanted out of life.”Innes decided to dedicate himself to developing his talents as an artist and performer. At 24 years old, he applied to the media music program at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, a city that has become a mecca of emerging talent, producing such artists as Imagine Dragons, Neon Trees, and Lindsey Stirling. In 2013, Innes took a break from his residency to try out for NBC’s The Voice. Singing John Mayer’s “Gravity”, Innes quickly received a four-chair turn and picked Usher as his coach. Mentored by Usher and fellow Grammy-winner Pharrell Williams, Innes performed a rendition of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” in the battle rounds, solidifying his place as a crowd favorite. After The Voice, Innes returned to Utah to focus on writing music for a debut album. He has co-written with Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, Stuart Maxfield of Fictionist and McKay Stevens and Nate Pyfer who co-wrote Kaskade’s 2014 Grammy-nominated track “Atmosphere”.

#43 - Ty Detmer - Heisman Trophy Winner Always Staying Positive Through Ups & Downs of Fame & Football

Detmer won BYU's first Heisman by producing the most passing yards and total offense in the history of the award. He is the last Heisman winner to come from a school that does not play in a major FBS conference. He signed with BYU and, after redshirting the 1987 season, showed early flashes of greatness in 1988 by coming off the bench to lead the Cougars to a 20-17 win over Colorado in the Freedom Bowl.Detmer took over the starting job the following season and set the NCAA record for passing by a sophomore with 4,560 yards (with 32 touchdowns). His rating of 175.6 nearly broke the NCAA record for pass efficiency in a season. His epic junior year included a 28-21 victory over top-ranked Miami early in the season in Provo, one of the biggest wins in BYU history. During the nationally televised victory over the Hurricanes, Detmer threw for 406 yards and earned national Player-of-the-Week honors. The win was, without a doubt, a huge factor in him winning the Heisman later in the year.Detmer returned for his senior season in 1991, passing for 4,031 yards and 35 scores while finishing third in the Heisman vote behind Desmond Howard.By the end of his collegiate career, Detmer had broken 59 NCAA records and tied three others. He finished his career with a then-NCAA-record 15,031 yards passing. He also had 14,665 career yards in total offense, another NCAA best at the time. The Cougars were invited to four bowl games and compiled a record of 37-13-2 during the Detmer years. After finishing his record-setting career at BYU and earning a bachelor's degree in recreation administration, Detmer was drafted in the 9th round of the 1992 draft by the Green Bay Packers and had a pretty decent journeyman career, playing for the Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, and the Atlanta Falcons.

#39 - Miranda Alcaraz - Top Female CrossFit Athlete Shares How Her Fitness Passion Saved Her Life

Miranda Alcaraz was one of the first women to have competed at the beginning of the Crossfit games. Her success has taken her across America as one of the best competitors from the West Coast. Miranda started her fitness career as a personal trainer, helping clients, and herself to stay in shape. One thing led to another, and Miranda went to a Crossfit gym in her local area. Within a short period of time, Miranda became hooked to Crossfit. Year-after-year Miranda became stronger, more skilled, and fitter. She then took to competing, winning many competitions in team events, and placing in respectable positions as a single competitor. Two weeks before the 2012 Crossfit games, Miranda, unfortunately, suffered a serious hand, and neck injury in a car accident.  However, Miranda’s experience in the hospital wasn’t an easy one. After arriving at the hospital, Miranda had to fight with the doctor to get her hand ex-raid. Even though Miranda expressed severe amounts of pain in her hand and neck, the doctor refused to x-ray anything other than her hand. The doctor in the hospital told Miranda that she had only sprained her neck (whiplash). So, being a strong Crossfit athlete, and with one hand in a cast, Miranda carried on her life regardless – training individuals, and working at Crossfit games. However, it wasn’t until she went to have her hand cast replaced by a specialist orthopedic surgeon, that he said her neck should also be ex-raid. After Miranda left the doctors, she headed straight to a Crossfit game. All of a sudden, Miranda begun to receive calls from the specialist doctor telling her that she had broken her neck in two different places. She knew that she had a long way to recovery but that didn't stop her at all.
