SBG 48: Miss Congeniality with Rebecca Noyes
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are joined by Lez Hang Out events' director Rebecca Noyes (@rebecca_noyes) to talk about why Miss Congeniality Should've Been Gay. If Gracie Lou Freebush isn't a lesbian, why does she act and look and speak like one? From the first minute Gracie is on screen as a kid reading Nancy Drew (we've all been there) to the last minute when Gracie is holding onto her girlfriend Cheryl as if her life depends on it, there is SO MUCH GAY. Miss Congeniality is the love story between an out and proud lesbian cop and a repressed Miss Rhode Island who sets fire to her batons and her sexuality for the love of her life. There is no other way to interpret this film. 317: God Save the Lesbian Bar w/ Lisa Cannistraci
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Lisa Cannistraci, the owner of Henrietta Hudson, the longest running lesbian bar in the country, (@henriettahudson), to chat about her experience running the bar. From taking Madonna on a tour of all of the lesbian bars in NYC, to Melissa Etheridge taking over the stage when the band started playing "Come to My Window", Lisa has seen it all. She talked to us about embracing the full spectrum of the LGBTQ community when she realized that she needed to adapt and make it a lesbian centric bar for the entire LGBTQ community. She also discussed her activism and how she's never shied away from taking a stand even if it means losing business. This iconic bar needs to raise $20k per month until social distancing restrictions are lifted. SBG 47: Beaches with Liliana Cervantes
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are joined by comedian Liliana Cervantes (@comedian_liliana_cervantes) to talk about why Beaches Should've Been Gay. From the first meeting between little butch CC and little high femme Hillary while CC is smoking a cigarette under the pier to their photo booth shenanigans and the fact that they stay long distance pen pal lovers for 10 years before they ever even see each other again, this movie just screams gay. The male relationships in CC and Hillary's lives all fail and in the end, they're only left with each other and they're much happier that way. CC even gains custody of Hillary's daughter and is in the delivery room when she's born. What a beautiful gay love story! 316: Lez-ssentials Portrait of A Lady on Fire
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) dive into Portrait of a Lady on Fire for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. We chat about this movie about queers in isolation before social distancing was all the rage. We discuss the choices that Marianne and Heloise have to make because of their circumstances, what it means to truly see someone else and Adele Haenel's eyes. Ellie wants more of the intimate scenes to be showcased in the film and Leigh discusses why she thinks the ending is perfection. From Drunkappella at the bonfire to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, we also have a field day with the soundtrack for this film. Lez-ssentials comes complete with a Portrait of A Lady on Fire drinking game because every lesbian movie or tv show should be accompanied by heavy drinking. This episode also comes with an original Lez-ssentials song based off Portrait of A Lady On Fire entitled "Desire." SBG 46: Birds of Prey
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Birds of Prey Should've Been Gay(er). Birds of Prey was already an amazing film for queer women. Renee Montoya is an out lesbian, Harley Quinn is canon bisexual from one clip in the intro sequence. However, the subtext gay is also overwhelming. We talk about the clearly sexual relationship between Black Mask and Mister Zsasz, the awkward gay that is Huntress, the badass queer that is Black Canary and the baby gay, Cassandra, that they all band together to save. We can't wait to see where the next Birds of Prey movie goes and how this band of LGBTQ superheroes kicks some ass and kisses ladies (each other). Also give us the Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy love story we've all been dying to see on the big screen! SBG45: Supercorp with Abnormally Adam
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are joined by reaction Youtuber and SuperCorp expert Abnormally Adam (@abnormallyadam) to talk about why SuperCorp Should've Been Gay. We talk about the parallels between Superman and Lois Lane and Supergirl and Lena Luthor that we don't think they put in there by accident, the intense sexual chemistry between Kara and Lena and the romantic way in which their "platonic" relationship is played out on screen. From grand romantic gestures like filling Kara's office with flowers, Kara getting Lena her favorite donuts when she's sad and Lena literally BUYING A COMPANY for Kara, these two best friends have a more intimately beautiful relationship than any of the straight pairings they try to put Lena and Kara with. From longing glances at photographs, lip bites and lingering stares, the body language and editing of the SuperCorp "friendship" is anything but friendly. Adam chats with us about his hopes that the writers will finally go there. Make SuperCorp canon YOU COWARDS! Follow along on Twitter @lezhangoutpod and Facebook and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). And stay tuned for Adam's Instagram story takeover! SBG 44: Empire Records
Happy (Belated) Rex Manning Day! Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Empire Records Should've Been Gay. We talk about how the swirling vortex of gay that surrounds Corey (Liv Tyler) as she decides between her undying love for her best friend Gina (Renee Zellweger) and freshly shaved power queer Deb (Robin Tunney). We talk the pain that we both feel when baby gay Corey throws herself at Rex Manning, a man who she thinks she must sleep with because of heteronormativity, followed by the pain that we feel when she gives in to being AJ's girlfriend because she convinces herself that her complete lack of feelings for him is "normal". Oh man can we all relate with Corey's stumble into gayness, her unrequited love for her best friend, her attraction to the out lesbian she works with and her lack of desire to sleep with Rex Manning.
