Unpopular Opinion: The Harder you Work the Less you Make

I grew up on a farm in the midwest, so I'm very familiar with the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality, and I don't shy away from doing work that's hard. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, we do not live in the time economy anymore. In the time economy, the more hours you put in, the more money you make. This was the height of the industrial revolution and where we got the lovely 40 hour work week. But now, we live in a knowledge economy, where it doesn't matter how many hours you work. You get paid for the value that you bring to the table, and this is true for many 9-5 jobs but also for freelancers and service providers. And yet, so many of us still fall into the trap of believing that in order to reach our goals, business or otherwise, we better work hard or else. It seems almost sacrilegious to say that working hard isn't something to be valued since our society puts so much emphasis on it, but there will come a point in your business or really any area of your life where working harder won't help you get better results. Everything has a tipping point, and the law of diminishing returns applies to this situation as well.I don't think we stop often enough to ask ourselves, "how could this be easier?" because we assume and prematurely accept that it's going to be hard. And today, I want to share why I believe that working hard won't help you make more money in your business as a service provider. In fact, I strongly believe that the least effort your business requires of you, the more successful you'll ultimately be. It seems counterintuitive at first, but I hope to change your mind!SHOW NOTES: jadeboyd.co/the-harder-you-work-the-less-you-make/LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Episode 19: Is the 40 Hour Work Week Really Productive?Effortless, by Greg McKeownEpisode 66: Are Your Services Priced to Scale?Episode 34: How to Align your Business to your Strengths with Arica Ohloff CONNECT WITH JADEWebsiteInstagramJoin My Email List LEVEL UP YOUR BUSINESS + PRODUCTIVITYOrganize your Business Digital CourseThe Business Edit™ Coaching ProgramFREE RESOURCESFREE Double your Profit While Working Less MasterclassFREE Task Batching WorkbookFREE Weekly Review ChecklistThe Business Minimalist Blueprint WorkbookThe Business Minimalist Podcast ArchiveMentioned in this episode:Download the CEO Day ChecklistDownload the free CEO Day Checklist at https://www.jadeboyd.co/ceoday.

How I Deal with Stress and Anxiety as a Business Owner

I recently read that as many as one in three entrepreneurs struggle with depression and burnout and 95% of entrepreneurs are unsure of how to achieve a healthy work-life balance. Here's why this is so important: when we don't manage and address stress in our life, it will inevitably lead to burnout. You can't sweep your stress under the rug and hope it goes away. You have to learn how to manage your stress levels if you want to build a sustainable business. In a recent podcast episode, 4 Business Lessons I've Learned the Hard Way, I mentioned that I've recently noticed how much of an impact stress has on my business. Over the past 6 months, I've been focussing on reducing stress triggers and learning how to process unavoidable stress. Today, I'm going to deep dive into the things I've found to be helpful in dealing with stress as a business owner in hopes that you'll be able to pick up a strategy or two and declutter some stress in your own business too.SHOW NOTES: jadeboyd.co/stress-and-anxiety-as-a-business-owner/LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Episode 071: 4 Business Lessons I've Learned the Hard Way11 Scary Truths about Mental Health and EntrepreneurshipClickUpOrganize your Business courseJournaling Prompts Pinterest boardCommon Planner 5 Year JournalUnbound 5 Year JournalEpisode 067: My 2024 Planning StackThe Best Planners Blog Post CONNECT WITH JADEWebsiteInstagramJoin My Email List LEVEL UP YOUR BUSINESS + PRODUCTIVITYOrganize your Business Digital CourseThe Business Edit™ Coaching ProgramFREE RESOURCESFREE Double your Profit While Working Less MasterclassFREE Task Batching WorkbookFREE Weekly Review ChecklistThe Business Minimalist Blueprint WorkbookThe Business Minimalist Podcast ArchiveMentioned in this episode:Download the CEO Day ChecklistDownload the free CEO Day Checklist at https://www.jadeboyd.co/ceoday.

The Quarterly Business Reset: How to Reach your Annual Business Goals Faster

One of the reasons why I think so many business owners struggle to hit their annual goals is because they don't take the time to break them down into bite-sized chunks. At the beginning of the year, they get excited and motivated and create the big pretty map, but then they shove it in a drawer and don't take it out because actually taking action on those goals feels overwhelming. This is why I'm so passionate about quarterly planning. Focussing one one quarter at a time can help you break down your big goals into more managable bite-sized chunks and be more realistic about what you actually have time to do during the next 90 days. It also eliminates the procrastination trap that many business owners fall into when they're constantly reassessing what they should be focussed on each month, week, or day. If you look at a huge list of projects and goals every day, it can feel absolutely paralyzing. It makes it easier to say, "I'll get to that later, there's plenty of time." But in reality, the only way to make progress on your goals is one tiny baby step at a time. If you can separate deciding what to do from the time and place you actually do those things, it will be easier for you to slide into execution mode, stop overthinking things, and just get things done.Today, I'm sharing a simple 5-step process that you can use each and every quarter to have a mini business reset and get clear on the projects and tasks you need to prioritize to reach your business goals.SHOW NOTES: jadeboyd.co/how-to-reach-your-annual-business-goals-faster/ LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Quarterly Business ResetMy Printable Wall Calendars CONNECT WITH JADEWebsiteInstagramJoin My Email List LEVEL UP YOUR BUSINESS + PRODUCTIVITYOrganize your Business Digital CourseThe Business Edit™ Coaching ProgramFREE RESOURCESFREE Double your Profit While Working Less MasterclassFREE Task Batching WorkbookFREE Weekly Review ChecklistThe Business Minimalist Blueprint WorkbookThe Business Minimalist Podcast ArchiveMentioned in this episode:Download the CEO Day ChecklistDownload the free CEO Day Checklist at https://www.jadeboyd.co/ceoday.
