The natural, Biblical progression for a woman's life is to go from Maiden to Mother to Matriarch. Each of these are seasons, and they're glorious in the way God guides us through them. But...our culture HATES that last step. Nobody is aspiring to grandmotherhood. The idea seems to be to go BACK to maiden after motherhood. The decision to have kids - or, more commonly these days, to NOT have kids - isn't just some random decision your kids make. It comes after years of seeing how you treat fatherhood and motherhood.
