Why Godly Patriarchs Need Brotherly Community | Micah Morgan & Khaldoun Sweis, PhD. Returns!

Do you want to follow biblical principles in all arenas of life? If so, you've probably found that it's not always easy to know how biblical ideas translate and apply to everyday life. You need to be in godly, manly, fraternal community, my friend.  That's what we're talking about in this episode of the ThinkPod.  Joel Settecase is joined by Micah Morgan and Dr. Khaldoun Sweis. Micah is a custom homebuilder and the CEO of Red Cloud Contracting. He and Joel have been friends since 1994. Back in high school they used to hang out with their other friend outside the local Jewel Osco, enjoying the finest cigars their local Speedway had to offer and pontificating on life's big questions. They called these meetups AWOL. It was awesome. Nowadays, building on that tradition, they host monthly AWOL gatherings for men in the Fox Valley region of Illinois. The cigars have gotten better, and the conversation is still awesome.  Khaldoun A. Sweis, is a Jordanian American Life Coach and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Olive-Harvey College in Chicago and serves as tutor in philosophy with Oxford University in England. After losing his son Enoch, who died in his arms, he had a paradigm shift in his life and ministry. His experience entails teaching philosophy and apologetics for over a decade as well as speaking at conferences both nationally and abroad in such locations as Hong Kong, Romania, Australia, and England. He has three books including Killing God: Addressing the Seven Most Common Objections from the New Atheists. He is a member of the American Philosophical Association and the Evangelical Philosophical Society. His goal is to help equip believers to deal with suffering productively and engage culture redemptively. Today they're bringing AWOL to you, as they dive in to several current cultural challenges and seek to view them in light of the timeless truth of God's word.  Listen to the ThinkPod: https://anchor.fm/the-think-podcast Watch on YouTube: http://youtube.com/thethinkinstitute If this blessed you, consider supporting us: https://thethink.institute/partner Facebook: http://facebook.com/thethinkinstitute  Twitter: http://twitter.com/thinkinst Mewe: http://mewe.com/i/thinkinstitute  Gab: http://gab.com/thinkinstitute Minds: https://www.minds.com/thinkinstitute/ Catechize your kids: http://thethink.institute/catakids. Look Around You. You Are Not The Only One. (Colossians 1:1–3)

Given the state of things, it’s easy to feel like you’re the only one who “gets it” and to despair. If we’re operating primarily by pride, we will isolate ourselves and have no hope. However, the Gospel truth kills our pride and opens your eyes to the reality that there are many other faithful saints, and that you are united to them in brotherhood in Christ. Rather than despair, this brings us to gratitude to God. In this study we’ll look at how Paul exemplified these ideas in his greeting to the Colossian church. Join me as I walk through Colossians 1:1–3 using the T.H.I.N.K. Method of Biblical Study. Get a taste for how this method works and how it can enrich your own time in the word. In this episode you will learn: • How the T.H.I.N.K. Method works • The background of the book of Colossians • Paul's big idea in Colossians 1:1–3 • How pride causes isolation and keeps you from gratitude • How the Gospel solves our pride problem and leads to gratitude • How to be more grateful in every arena of life • Some Christian brethren Joel Settecase is grateful for right now. Apologetics Must Begin With This.

(What "This" is is given in the first two words of this episode.) "Let's say one day you decide to share the message of the Bible with your neighbor. He says he's not a Christian but will believe in Jesus if you can prove that God exists. Here's the catch: he says you can't use the Bible to prove it, because he doesn't believe in it. What do you do?" Welcome to the ThinkPod—helping fathers lead their families in answering current cultural challenges with timeless, biblical truth. In this episode you will learn: Some disturbing stats about the spiritual condition of the U.S. Two ways of doing apologetics Which way of apologetics is better. One practical step you can take today to improve your apologetic. The Think Institute’s mission is to equip believers to explain, share and defend the Christian message. How to Find Intellectual Community In Your 20s, 30s and Beyond [Intro to Christian Study Centers]

Think Christianly: A History of L'Abri, Regent College, and the Christian Study Center Movement: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1514004283/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_Z20JHVWQ89V7R3J2KT52 https://twitter.com/CECotherman Intellectual stimulation, practical wisdom, and community—these are all things we want in our lives. And for many of us I believe that podcasts, by providing them, fill in a gap that is missing from our lives, especially since college. (I remember my time at Grove City College as being the last time when I really could make friends super easily, almost automatically—and those friendships were often sparked by an hours-long, late-night, deep, intellectual conversation about something. Maybe you can relate.) However, podcasts don't really provide that face-to-face, in-person community. Now that you're out of college, starting a family, and holding down a career, you still want that intellectual community and fellowship in your life, but authentic intellectual community can be hard to find. What if there was a way to find intellectual community in your 20s, 30s and beyond? That's the question that my guest Charlie Cotherman answers in his book, To Think Christianly: A History of L'Abri, Regent College, and the Christian Study Center Movement. We talk about: the Christian Study Center Movement, the importance of "embodied" community, the four different kinds of study centers that exist (and who they serve), and even how to launch and fund a study center. This episode may inspire you to start a new Christian study center, or it may just prompt you to invite a few guys over for cigars and intellectual discussion around a bonfire this weekend. But either way, I'm sure it will make you think. A Christian Theory of Knowledge (Biblical Worldview Course, Session 4)

In this session we're considering the following questions: What is knowledge? Where does knowledge come from? What is knowledge for? Can we have knowledge, without God? Why You Should Raise Your Kids To Think Like Philosophers (With Dr. Owen Anderson)

Elementary Guide to the Philosophers, by Owen Anderson: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1685645836/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_601XYA7NWRS1ZMQJ0A32 https://drowenanderson.com https://thethink.institute It shouldn't come as a surprise that many of the messages we receive today are in conflict—they conflict with one another (like, should I follow my heart like Disney, or should I clean my room like Jordan Peterson?), and it seems that, more often than not, they even conflict with the truth, especially when judged against the standard of the Bible. As Christians, 2 Corinthians 10:5 says we're supposed to "take every thought captive to obey Christ," but we're steeped in the world and its thoughts for most of the day, every day. Thinking well, wisely and biblically takes work. Not everyone needs to go out and get a philosophy or theology degree, but we should all learn to think more like a philosopher. And if this is true for us, it's also true for our kids. After all, they'll be here after we're gone, and they'll shape the world according to the ideas we helped to instill in them. With that in mind, it's obvious that our work today in helping them to think like philosophers—rooted in the word of God—can go a long way tomorrow. So how do we help our kids to "think like philosophers?" In this episode of the Think Podcast, Owen Anderson returns to help us out. He's a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University, and the author of a brand new book aimed at teaching high schoolers about the great minds of the past—and a few not-so-great ones—to help them think, like philosophers. I always enjoy having Owen on the ThinkPod. And I think you'll enjoy this episode too. Apologetics AMA: 8 VERY TOUGH Questions Answered with Scripture

Have you ever been asked a question that you weren't ready for? Maybe it was one of your employees asking your opinion on some current event. Or maybe it was a kid in the Sunday School class you teach—or even your own kid—asking you something about God, or the Bible, or how we really know something we believe is true… and it caught you off-guard? In this video you will hear biblical answers to: • What Bible passage has had the greatest impact on my life? • Who is the most "based" person in the Old Testament? • Are Catholics and Mormons real Christians? • What does the Bible say about "the gays?" • How do you explain things in science that contradict God's truth? • How does science prove creationism? • Why is the Bible so against hate, when hate is "based" and usually justified? • How can God justify nine abused kids dying in a fire? I've been there too. We all have. But the founding belief of the Think Institute is that no believer should ever get caught flat-footed when asked about what, or why, we believe. That's why I do AMAs on Discord. AMA stands for "Ask Me Anything," and Discord is a web app for hosting chat and voice discussions. Twice a month, I hop on Discord, and Elipsis, one of the owners of the Politics server, and a Christian, hosts a voice chat room, where anyone can ask me any question about the biblical perspective on life, right and wrong, truth, science, God, Jesus, church, philosophy… you get the idea. I do these AMAs not because I have all the answers, but in order to sharpen my skills in "being ready to answer anyone," as 1 Peter 3:15 says, and to clear away obstacles to faith that my discussion partners may have, as well as to help you, the ThinkSquad, be more ready for the next time you are faced with an unexpected question about what you believe. And you know it's coming. Oh, and you may find that some of your own questions are answered as well. I hope you enjoy, and are edified by this AMA.
