Paleo Diet: Is It Healthy?

Is the paleo diet healthy? Supporters claim that by eating the way our ancestors did more than 10,000 years ago you will lose weight and get healthy. It's a diet free of most grains, beans, legumes and potatoes since those foods weren't available during the paleolithic era. However, there is evidence to suggest certain grains and tubers were in fact part of the Neanderthal diet. Without those starches, a typical paleo menu relies heavily on grass-fed lean meat, fish, eggs, and oil. Nuts, fruit and vegetables are also permitted. Millions sing paleo praises, but are they off key? "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by Dr. Hana Kahleova to get to the bottom of the paleo diet. They are separating myth from fact by examining the true effect it can have on your health. Chuck also welcomes professional wrestler Austin Aries back to the show as he continues to explore the success athletes are having by eating a plant-based diet. The multiple time world champion has turned his back on a meat and dairy-rich upbringing in Wisconsin and is now fueled exclusively by plants. He also has been training with former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. Austin also ranks the top vegan pro wrestlers of all time! Cleaning Up School Lunch

The current generation of children will not live longer than their parents if the current skyrocketing obesity trend continues. One out of every five children are now obese, according to the latest statistics, while millions of others are overweight and not far behind. As those numbers continue to rise, so too will the number of children facing illnesses once thought to be reserved only for adults — heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. On this episode of The Exam Room™, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll talks about his own struggle with childhood obesity. Doctors put him on blood pressure medication when he was only 15 years old because of his poor eating habits! Dietician Maggie Neola then joins the show to update us on some extraordinary efforts to prevent other children from suffering the same fate. A number of states are considering legislation that would require schools to offer plant-based lunch options, including New York and California. She and Chuck also talk about how you can get involved and help push legislation through that would make healthy lunches the law of the land. New York residents can send their representatives a letter urging them to support proposals S1472 and A1624 that would bring plant-based food to schools statewide. If you live in the Washington, D.C. area, you can schedule an appointment to meet with Maggie to review your own diet at the Barnard Medical Center. Audrey Dunham then joins the show! If you're not familiar with her, you should be! She is a woman with many hats from mother to baker to fitness competitor to trainer and entrepreneur. Audrey also just so happens to be married to famed ventriloquist Jeff Dunham whose popular character Peanuts is the inspiration for her line of plant-based treats. Audrey shares some tips and tricks about raising her own children on a plant-based diet and also chronicles her own physical struggles as a fitness competitor that led her to adopt a plant-based diet herself!
