346: Holistic Ways To Improve Self-Care With Chris Mcdonald

In today's episode, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C interviews a returning guest who was last on the show in 2019. Today's guest is Chris McDonald, LMHCS! Chris generously agreed to join the Trauma Therapist Network community to share some experiential holistic self-care practices last month, and our members loved what she shared with us. Chris McDonald is a Holistic Licensed Therapist, 200 hour registered yoga teacher and holistic provider in Garner, NC. She is also host to the Holistic Counseling Podcast. She specializes in treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma and grief in young adults experiencing life transitions. She integrates yoga, mindfulness, meditation and Brainspotting into treatment. 344: Vicarious Trauma And Helping Professionals
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! Continuing the theme of tending to our own needs, today’s topic is one that’s important to therapy professionals and to first responders, too. To anyone who works with people who are suffering, Vicarious Trauma is important. Host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C revisits a past episode in which she speaks about Secondary Traumatic Stress and Vicarious Trauma after attending a workshop on this topic by Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky, the author of Trauma Stewardship. This week is Part 1 and next week, in part 2, we will hear from Laura van Dernoot Lipsky herself! Here’s what you’ll hear in this episode: The terms Vicarious Trauma and Secondary Traumatic Stress are interchangeable. Therapists bear witness to the traumatic stories of clients and are affected by them. The nature of therapy work requires empathy; it’s honorable, brave, and important work intended to make the world a better place. There are small ways to lessen the impact of trauma, by mindfully checking in with yourself and using positive coping methods. As a therapist, how much are you “numbing?” We discuss examples. Laura recommends spending 12-60 minutes each day, for six days a week, working out to the degree of breaking a sweat. We owe it to the people we help to take care of our Vicarious Trauma, and regular exercise is one way to do that. Isolation is common in trauma work, because we feel like “nobody understands.” The American Counseling Association lists several signs of Vicarious Trauma, including: Having difficulty talking about feelings Feeling diminished joy Feeling trapped by work Limited range of emotions Exaggerated startle reflex Hopelessness Trouble sleeping Exhaustion Conflict with other staff Trouble with intimacy Feeling withdrawn and isolated Impatience, apathy A change in worldview What can you do to make a difference? 342: Micro Self-Care For Helping Professionals with Ashley Davis Bush
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C revisits an episode from 2016 on a very important subject - self care for helping professionals! Ashley Davis Bush, LICSW is a psychotherapist in private practice in southern New Hampshire with over 30 years’ experience. Ashley has written several self-help books, including Transcending Loss and Simple Self-Care for Therapists. She is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and has some great tips to share with us today about improving our relationships to self-care. Join us! What you’ll hear in this episode: Ashley loves her work and counts it a privilege to be part of peoples’ lives. Her private practice is in her home, and it’s “a fun job, watching life unfold in front of you.” Even the simple choice of working from home can be a self-care choice. Ashley’s work focuses on grief, couples, and anxiety, but self-care is a common thread that is woven into her work with all clients. Ashley says that much of her practice patterns itself after her books. Her most recent book introduces the idea of “micro self-care.” “Macro self-care”practices are the big things that we normally think of regarding self-care, but micro practices are short, simple things that can be done in 1-2 minutes. Ashley focuses on self-care to avoid burnout, which she categorizes as “little b” and “BIG B” types of burnout. “little b” burnout is when you are exhausted at the end of the day or week. You may need a good night’s rest or a few days off to regenerate and recover. “BIG B” burnout is when you need to leave the field because you can’t take it anymore. Ashley addresses “vicarious trauma,” in that ALL therapists do some sort of trauma work. Personal and professional experience can cloud the lens with which we see the world, but life’s pains are a constant trauma. Ashley explains self-care vs. self-violence: when you don’t take care of yourself, then you’re doing harm (violence) to yourself. Mindfulness leads to grounding, bringing us into this moment right now. Ashley shares her Tibetan bell practice to help bring clients into mindfulness. She recommends using micro self-care practices at the beginning, middle, and end of your day. Ashley’s book lists 40-50 suggestions as to how to scale down macro self-care practices into small micro practices. Making the transformation from macro to micro self-care practices requires thinking creatively, but shouldn’t be overwhelming. Neuroplasticity is the science that show the brain can change in response to repetitive behaviors. You can rewire your brain to be more peaceful! When your brain is rewired, then your default setting comes to a place of gratitude and feeling good. Ashley’s three takeaways: Have a basic plan for 3 micro self-care practices each day. Sleep 8-9 hours each night so you aren’t tired during the day. Prioritize self-care, and you’ll soon realize that you can’t live without it! 341: Interpersonal Neurobiology And Understanding The Mind with Dr Daniel Siegel
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week's episode is replay of a fascinating conversation with someone who needs no introduction. Dr. Dan Siegel is this week's guest, and he explains the concept of interpersonal neurobiology, the nature of the mind, integration and “Mwe”. Personally, I think a "Mwe" consciousness is more crucial than ever right now. He shares his story of becoming interested in the brain and the mind beginning in college, and continuing through his medical school training. He explains his disappointment at discovering in medical school in the late 1980’s that there did not seem to be a science of the mind that psychiatry was using to inform mental health work. He wanted to understand both how the body functions and how our mental lives play a part in keeping us alive. He explains that interpersonal neurobiology is not a branch of neurobiology, but a framework combining many disciplines including the mental health fields of psychology, psychiatry, counseling, social work, as well as sociology, philosophy, quantum physics, math and others to answer the question “what is the mind?” He explains that he has interviewed over 100,000 people and none of them had ever had any training in what the mind is, which is a real gap in knowledge considering that we in the mental health field are working in the mind. That is what our work is. He tells us that the mind is where the self comes from; then discusses what the mind is, why it exists, where is it, what’s its function. Dan argues we need to understand the mind to understand all of these questions. He discusses this in depth in his new book, Mind: A Journey to the Heart of Being Human, which is coming out in Fall of 2016. He notes that the field called Philosophy of mind discourages asking what is the mind. Psychiatry doesn’t have a definition of the mind. Psychology doesn’t have a definition and says it’s a useful placeholder. What is a healthy mind? What’s a healthy thought? Some topics Dan discusses in this episode: Mind is not only emotions in this definition. It includes emotions, feelings, anything you can be subjectively aware of. In Dan’s definition, consciousness, subjective experience and information processing are the 3 parts of the mind. He talks about how he noticed that what we call mental health disorders fit into a pattern of chaos and rigidity. In probability theory of math there was an area of study which related to this which states that a complex system has three characteristics: It’s open to influences from outside of self; capable of being chaotic and it’s non-linear. It’s a self organizing, embodied and relational process. This answer comes from math. He explains that in mental health, integration defines health. He states that the best definition of mental health is that the system is Flexible, Adaptive, Coherent, Energized and Stable (FACES).
