The gospels tell us that Jesus dined with sinners. All kinds. Often. What was shocking in the first century can still surprise us today: Jesus included the most messed up in His dinner table conversations – because He included them in His love. Scripture describes Jesus at dinners with several kinds of sinners including tax collectors, Pharisees, sinful women, thieves, the “unclean” and others. How do we respond when Jesus invites sinners to dinners? Do we say yes to His invitation to dine – as sinners - with our perfect God? And what about His invitation for others? "Family first." "The most important thing in the world is family." "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them." There are lots of quotations that lift up the value of family. But there's one quote from a very influential person that doesn't usually make onto prints that people hang on their walls. It's a quote from Jesus, when he said "Unless you hate your family, you cannot be my disciple." Really? Yeah, it's right there in Luke 14:26. You can look it up. The way the world and the Bible define greatness could not be more different! The world describes greatness as strength, power, influence, and wealth. In the Bible, greatness is smallness. Greatness pursues reconciliation and forgiveness. Greatness welcomes even the least valuable in the world’s eyes. Greatness serves. It becomes obvious that the Bible’s story of greatness points us toward the only One who has fulfilled all of these criteria and is truly great—Jesus. And yet there’s also an invitation here too.
