We live in a day of conflict. Over how to vote, how to parent and how to respond in a pandemic. In the early church, followers of Christ struggled with conflict as well, taking different positions on how to express and live out belief in Jesus. The Apostle Paul wrote many letters to various churches and one of his ongoing themes was unity. In Ephesians 4, Paul offers a summary list of what we as believers can hold in common together and where we need to stand as “ONE.” Then he moves on to explain that it’s only when we each invest our MANY unique, multifaceted and diverse gifts in the communal body that we will reach maturity in Christ. ONE and MANY. Doubt. One thing that every person who has lived long enough has in common is a struggle with doubt. Whether it’s questioning our calling because “How could God use me?” or prayers that have been not yet answered which can raise the question: Is God willing or able to help?” the issue of doubt is universal. What the Scriptures reveal is that the presence of faith does not necessarily mean the absence of doubt. In fact, we find examples of those who continued in the midst of their doubts. The stories of the past have been given to us to help us turn doubt on itself. The gospels tell us that Jesus dined with sinners. All kinds. Often. What was shocking in the first century can still surprise us today: Jesus included the most messed up in His dinner table conversations – because He included them in His love. Scripture describes Jesus at dinners with several kinds of sinners including tax collectors, Pharisees, sinful women, thieves, the “unclean” and others. How do we respond when Jesus invites sinners to dinners? Do we say yes to His invitation to dine – as sinners - with our perfect God? And what about His invitation for others? "Family first." "The most important thing in the world is family." "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them." There are lots of quotations that lift up the value of family. But there's one quote from a very influential person that doesn't usually make onto prints that people hang on their walls. It's a quote from Jesus, when he said "Unless you hate your family, you cannot be my disciple." Really? Yeah, it's right there in Luke 14:26. You can look it up.
