When ordered to evacuate the Philippines in the early days of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur made a promise to his troops and to the Filipino people, “I shall return.” Some two years later, MacArthur kept that promise by striding back onto Philippine soil as the victorious Supreme Commander of the forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, declaring “I have returned.” Famous returns are as old as history itself. Yet, the most significant of all returns is yet to occur—the return of Jesus Christ to this world. We live in a world of neighbors. Next door. Across the street and around the corner. But also in the next cubicle at work and in the next county, state and country. We share our planet with global neighbors. And yet, how many of our neighbors do we really know? In a world of “stranger danger” we tend to pull back from those around us. In Luke 10, Jesus challenges us to love our neighbors as ourselves – and in so doing, to really love Jesus. We live in a very different time from the time of the Bible. One of the more significant areas of difference has to do with women and the opportunities they now have.
