The Rollup

The trajectory to achieving a "full rollup" on Bitcoin is a gradual process, similar to that of Ethereum rollups gradually implementing fraud proofs/zk technology. Build on Bitcoin (BoB) has taken the approach of building a product (on mainnet now) which resembles more of an hybrid optimistic rollup between Ethereum and Bitcoin L2. They have been quick to market and have built a strong community. Despite the challenges, such as the complexity of building on Bitcoin compared to other ecosystems, BoB is set on making advanced features like zk and account abstraction available over time. BoB’s approach tackles three major challenges: aligning with Bitcoin’s ecosystem, creating a real ecosystem of builders & apps, and ensuring liquidity for new projects. By leveraging both Bitcoin’s security and the Ethereum network, BoB is working to establish this balance. But, this comes with tradeoffs which we thoroughly address in this presentation. BoB’s journey is divided into several phases. Phase 1 which is already live is their optimistic Ethereum rollup. Phase 2 introduces Bitcoin PoW security through merge mining, while Phase 3 aims to transition to a Bitcoin rollup with fraud proofs (using BitVM) and potential ZK capabilities. We also discuss their OptiMine protocol, which similar to PBS, separates block production from block finalization for allowing faster finality leveraging Bitcoin's miners. This innovative approach ensures consistent block fees and enhances miner incentives for the longer term. Welcome to the first episode of our Bitcoin and Beyond presentation series. We aim to provide you with technical knowledge about the state of different Bitcoin scaling solutions. Are they sidechains? L2s? True rollups? For the first episode, we're diving into Citrea, a project focused on bringing ZK to Bitcoin with a true rollup design (using Bitcoin for data availability). We sat down with Orkun Kilic, to discuss Bitcoin’s security and ZK. Citrea is designed to use state differences and ZK proofs, making data usage more efficient and scalable from the jump. This approach overcomes the traditional limitations of Bitcoin, allowing for sophisticated onchain operations beyond simple transactions. But, is using Bitcoin for data availability really a feasible path? We asked Orkun about this and more. Citrea also introduced, Clementine, a peg mechanism which minimizes trust and ensures that BTC can be used seamlessly across different layers. By (soon) utilizing BitVM for optimistic verification of ZK proofs, Clementine provides an innovative way to maintain Bitcoin’s robust security while facilitating efficient data and state transitions. If you've been following along for sometime, you've likely heard of Fluent as part of our Modular March campaign or in a previous episode. We first met Dino last year, early on in the development of their zkWasm L2, powered by a web assembly virtual machine (for execution). This has long been a part of our modular thesis, so naturally we were extremely interested in their newly launched "Blended execution" idea. In today's video, we set out to understand why blended execution networks are superior to single execution. We learned about the idea behind "taking the best parts" of modular VMs like EVM, WASM, and SVM and coexist with each other. This approach brings a new level of interoperability to the modular eco for devs, making it easier for them to leverage their own background and skills to participate in crypto. We are huge proponents of the modular thesis as our entire brand is centered around this. We often challenge ideas which we have a shared thesis with as part of the channel, as well as welcome new ideas to the the mix. In today's video we got the chance to understand the idea behind the integrated thesis with Movement Labs and Omni have been pushing forward. While we did spend some times talking about the different terminology, to us that's not the important part. In fact, we want to focus on less confusion for all of those involved in the modular ecosystem. We still prefer modular. However, the important takeaways from this conversation stem from the ideas of solving the fragmentation issues at hand with modularity and "putting all the pieces of the puzzle" together in a cohesive way. In today's episode, we understood the challenge of describing hybrid blockchain designs with various modular parts, leading to the term "integrated." These were initially called "Frankenstein chains." Unlike traditional monolithic blockchains, integrated solutions combine modular elements into cohesive, efficient systems. This approach draws parallels to microservices in modern software, offering flexibility and optimization...but isn't this just the meaning of modular? Kinda... Integrated solutions, as posed by Rushi, Austin and others focus on reducing fragmentation, and bringing different modular parts together, thus enhancing user experience through abstraction and seamless interaction. We found room to counter, learn, and understand the vision of where the modular movement is headed. The modular ecosystem is still in its infancy stages. We are at the cusp of an acceleration of sovereign rollups built with Celestia underneath. This idea, while new to many, has been at the root of Celestia's roadmap since inception. In today's video we take you through everything you need to know about sovereign rollups, with a focus on Forma. We discuss how Forma has been carefully designed to leverage the unique properties of sovereign rollups, a key distinction that allows it to operate independently of traditional chains by settling directly to Celestia. We go into some of the technicals such as their custom pre-compiles and a specialized execution environment meant to handle detailed metadata and intricate interactions between NFTs. Their goal is to allow artists and onchain creators to build more nuanced and dynamic digital assets. We ask about their thoughts about using TIA as gas token and how they plan to align Forma with a broader community of over 600,000 active wallets. We were also joined by Achilleas from the Celestia team to discuss Modularium and the upcoming weekly mint cycle. VCs have been getting a lot of hate recently. The era of high FDV, low float launches may be coming to an end soon...or will it? In today's conversation we sat down with Mads Mathiesen, a long-time crypto researcher and now leading research for an elite crypto VC Maven11. He was writing about data availability and Celestia in 2019-2020, before anyone was really paying attention to modularity.
