Rudy von Berg - one of the most successful middle-distance triathletes

Welcome to The Greg Bennett show, an AnyQuestion podcast hosted by Former Professional Olympic and World Champion Athlete Greg Bennett.  Greg chats with the world's greatest athletes and high performers to find out how they got to the top of the world and how they are able to sustain it.  In this week’s episode, Greg chats with one of the most successful middle-distance triathletes, Rudy von Berg. 2019 saw a breakthrough performance and a World Championship podium for the fast-rising Rodolphe Von Berg. But, when you are already part of a triathlon dynasty long before you turn 30, there are still plenty more chapters to be written in the sporting history of RVB. The sport of triathlon truly runs through the veins of the Von Berg family. Rodolphe Sr continues to be one of the best in the world in his category, still racing with success into his 60s. With his son’s progress to date, the dynasty has many years to run yet. “My earliest memory of him racing was in Kona at the IRONMAN World Championship in 1998 when I was 5 years old,” says ‘Junior’, who is now doing a fine job of forging his own direction in the sport, a path which he hopes in due course will lead him to the top step of the podium on the Big Island. “As a kid, you definitely tell yourself, ‘One day I’ll be here with the top pros to try and win it!’ Kona will always be the number one race to win for me in my career.” While success on Alii’s Drive may be a few years off yet - he’s yet to even start over the iron distance - his rapid progress, race wins and Championship titles over the Middle Distance confirm that his career path is heading firmly in the right direction. timestamps 09:54 - Greg dives into Rudy’s journey into the sport of triathlon. 22:18 - Rudy talks about his events in 2020 with fascinating detail. 26:02 - Rudy explains how his passion for endurance sport began and how his father has inspired him throughout his career. 31:08 - A little retro 80’s flashback … Greg and Rudy talk about triathlon over the past decades … to current day standards. 37:47 - Rudy and Greg discuss the point in Rudy’s career when he recognised and believed he could be a professional athlete. 40:55 - Having taken down many of the biggest names in the sport, Rudy and Greg discuss who is still on his list to beat. 50:23 - 15 fun rapid-fire quick answer questions What is your favorite family vacation? What are you currently watching on Netflix? First car you owned? How many episodes of the Greg Bennett Show have you listened to? Two most-used apps on your phone? Out of 10, how cool would you say you are. If you could swap jobs with anyone else, who would it be? Which would you rather do: wash dishes, mow the lawn, clean the bathroom, or vacuum the house? First job? Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life? What dinner could you prepare? Three guests’ non-family you would invite?  Which decade of music is the best? Should pineapple be allowed on Pizza? Where is somewhere you haven’t been, you’d like to go? Greatest movie of all time? 01:08:01 - Rudy talks about his sponsors.

Nicola Spirig - The greatest female Olympian in the sport of Triathlon - Gold, Silver and five Olympic Games

Podcast: The Greg Bennett Show Episode:  Nicola Spirig Welcome to The Greg Bennett show, a Bennett Endurance podcast hosted by Former Professional Olympic Athlete Greg Bennett. Greg chats with the world's greatest athletes and high performers to find out how they got to the top of the world and how they are able to sustain it. In today’s episode, he is joined by his wife Laura, and they hear from Nicola Spirig. Nicola Spirig is a Swiss professional triathlete. She is a five-time Olympian, the 2012 Olympic, and six times European champion in women's triathlon. Nicola is married to fellow retired athlete Reto Hug, has three children, and during her athletic career completed a law degree.   As the conversation kicks off, Greg asks Nicola to reflect on this past year in the sport. She has been training and her next large goal is to complete an IronMan race in under eight hours. Even if a goal sounds impossible, she says it’s important to try, especially when the intention is to inspire others to follow their dreams. Nicola isn’t an extrovert who loves being in front of others, but she does love working with young people and is glad her status as an Olympian has given her this platform.   Going into this year’s Tokyo Olympics, Nicola was ready. She was able to prepare without injury, compete in and win other good races like the European Championships, and beat some of her own personal best times. On race day, even though everyone had prepared for a hot day, it was raining, which for Nicola wasn’t a problem and she placed sixth. Today, she says she’s happy with her performance and wouldn’t change anything even though she didn’t get the medal she was aiming for.   Nicola grew up with parents who were sports teachers and had the luxury of trying many different sports. For a long time, she didn’t think of triathlon as a career, but rather as something she loved to do. She only considered herself a professional athlete for about two years, despite being involved in the sport for much longer. Her preparation around the London 2012 Olympics was nearly perfect and her at a professional level. She won that triathlon just ahead of Lisa Norden, with their times being the same, and only a photograph was able to be used to separate their crossing the finish line.   For the Rio Olympics, things were different. She was injured, the defending Olympic champion, and she’d had a baby in the years since her Olympic win. She took home the silver from that race and says the experience was much different than the London Olympics, but she was still very happy with her performance. She reminds listeners that while yes it takes a lot to get a medal in the Olympic games, it also takes a lot to finish fourth, sixth, or tenth.   Laura and Greg then ask Nicola rapid-fire questions covering everything from TV and movies to household chores, to her taste in music. Then they wrap up the episode with Nicola sharing what her day-to-day life is like these days.   Find show notes, discount codes, and more here. This is a treat and such a privilege to have Emma Frodeno (formerly Snowsill), Nicola Spirig, Gwen Jorgensen, and Flora Duffy. . It’s taken several months... but we are finally here. I’m so excited about this episode.   You see, I’ve always wondered what it takes to win on that special day, that one day that every Olympic athlete aspires to. I’ve wondered what it must feel like crossing that finish line knowing that you are the Olympic champion, and how does that heavy medal affect the rest of your life?   Well, today we’ll get some answers to those questions... today I have the past four-woman Olympic Triathlon gold medalists on the show.
