Can you hear God?—Featuring John Carroll

Support us on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3paiqn3  Listener Survey: https://forms.gle/vJcHEmLeKJgNPbgA8  Mentioned: The School of Kingdom Living: https://dwillard.org/the-school-of-kingdom-living Hearing God by Dallas Willard: https://dwillard.org/books/hearing-god On This Week's Episode: We're talking about hearing from God, how to discern God's voice from your own inner thoughts, and some of the experiences that can cause so many of us to wonder if we're actually hearing from God.  Full disclosure... We tried to have this conversation before. In fact, it's been recorded and still lives somewhere in the cloud. But it's not being published. In that episode, we were wrestling with this same idea and while it may have been helpful for us in our own personal growth, it wasn't going to be the most helpful conversation for the world.  We realized we weren't at a place of spiritual maturity ourselves to put to words this kind of incredibly intimate, universal and not universal, Christian experience: Hearing from God. We're incredibly grateful that John Carroll has offered to step into this conversation with us!  About Our Guest: John Carroll oversees the School of Kingdom Living. With a Bachelor's degree from the University of Central Florida and a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, John brings a unique blend of experience (11 years in business, 9 years in the local church) to Dallas Willard Ministries. Prior to joining DWM, John served for six years with James Bryan Smith at the Apprentice Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation, where he directed the finances and operations, including the Apprentice Experience. John has a shepherd's heart and is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church. His great passion is for the two "ships" in life: DiscipleSHIP and RelationSHIP, which underscores the importance and purpose of the School of Kingdom Living. Turns out ChatGPT, AI, and everything alike was not a fad… those conversations are here to stay. And how we approach that technology, the conversations we have, and how quickly we adopt or push it away form us more or less like Christ.  And as a result, Eric’s favorite from 2023 was this conversation from Jay Kim, a pastor in Silicon Valley that is also an author of some pretty incredible books. 10/10, highly recommended both Analog Church and Analog Christian.  About Jay Kim (from his website) Hi there. Emotions & Spiritual Formation—Feat. Becky Castle Miller

Support us on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3paiqn3  Listener Survey: https://forms.gle/vJcHEmLeKJgNPbgA8  On This Week's Episode: If you’ve been following The Living Room Disciple since the beginning, you may recall us having Becky Castle Miller on. Well, as we paused and reflected on our favorite conversations from 2023, this one was certainly in that mix. If you haven’t heard it yet, you’re in for a treat! This is a conversation exploring the idea of HUMAN emotion that Christ experienced.  If you have already heard this, we’d encourage you to listen again and reflect on this episode. As always, please share with a friend! About Our Guest (from her website) HI, I’M BECKY CASTLE MILLER.  Emotions are important to a healthy Christian life.  Jesus is our model for living in an emotionally vibrant way, yet many of us who want to follow him ended up learning in church to squash, distrust, and ignore our emotions. I’m learning new ways to understand and embrace our God-given emotions as disciples. I did my master’s at Northern Seminary studying with Scot McKnight where I wrote my thesis on Jesus’s emotions and the history of anti-emotionalism in Christian discipleship. I’m working on turning that thesis into a book. I’m currently working on a Ph.D. in New Testament at Wheaton College studying with Esau McCaulley. My dissertation is about emotions and discipleship in the Gospel of Luke. My family and I lived in the Netherlands for eight years where I served at an international church. We returned to the US in 2020. My husband and I have five kids and an elderly gentleman cat.
