Becoming Sturdy & Expansive with Jules Bakshi, Founder & CEO of GOOD MOVE 🌳
Back on the podcast this week is Jules Bakshi, a professional dancer, choreographer, and founder and CEO of GOOD MOVE, a dance and mindful fitness studio for all genders, races, and sizes located in Brooklyn. Jules was in LA, so we caught up for hours at my kitchen table and reflected on the growth, change, and lessons she’s learned this year. It’s a fitting last episode of 2021 because Jules' first conversation, recorded at her kitchen table, was the last episode I recorded in Brooklyn on New Years' Eve 2019, the day before I left. In this new episode, Jules talks about being led by what is working rather than what is not, non-attachment, softening to become both more sturdy and more expansive, and what she's excited about for this coming year. Seasons of Overwhelm with Christy Harrison (Part 2)
This week I spoke with my friend and mentor Christy Harrison. Christy is a registered dietitian, certified eating disorders specialist, journalist, and host of the weekly podcast Food Psych. Her first book, Anti-Diet, came out last year and she's currently finishing her next book, Rethinking Wellness, which will be out in 2023. In this second half of our conversation, we focus on emotional eating and shame in eating habits (like eating alone or standing up). We talk about how the pandemic impacts body image as well as body image in pregnancy and postpartum. We also get into the experience of anorexia nostalgia and much more.Last week, in part one, we covered the principles and pitfalls of intuitive eating, pregnancy and IVF, writing, productivity, the overwhelming life season Christy is in and how she's taking care of herself throughout it all. We discussed how she's using meditation as a tool to get used to sitting in discomfort and more. Brightness Crumb with Grace Park & Jesse Dalton of The Deer 🍊
This week I spoke with Grace Park and Jesse Dalton, two members of the Austin-based band The Deer. If you listened to my recent episode with Buck Meek (of Big Thief), he recommended his fellow Texan musicians The Deer to be featured on the podcast, and I'm so glad he did. Their songs are spacious, with airy vocals and gentle percussion, and it’s a sound that compels comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, Neko Case or Mazzy Star. In this conversation, Jesse and Grace tell me about the beginning of the band, being back on the road after quarantine, their new album, and their process. We talk about trial and error, acceptance, friendship, grief, and much more. [Updated Repost] Julia Turshen Part 1 - food, effortlessness, connection, control, writing, etc.
This one isn’t from that deep into the archive, it was one of my favorites of the year. You’ll hear more about it in the original intro but we split it into two parts and you’re about to hear part one of my two part conversation with chef and writer Julia Turshen. I thought would be timely for this week which is the start of the holiday season because. It’s a week where a lot of us will be gathering and there’s a lot of talk about food and eating and this episode gets into that. Julia has coauthored numerous cookbooks and has written for TheNew York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Vogue, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Saveur, and more. The New York Times has described her “at the forefront of the new generation of authentic, approachable authors.” Julia not only loves cooking and writing about food, she also loves talking about it and hosts her own podcast, Keep Calm and Cook On. She’s genuine, talented, and kind. I loved this conversation with her that spanned a wide range of topics, including her creative process, working with big names on coauthored books, , body image, diet culture and the food industry, perfectionism as it relates to capitalism, effortlessness actually taking effort, connection, cooking for one, and more.Julia: https://www.instagram.com/turshen/ me: https://www.instagram.com/katiedalebout/ let it out: https://www.instagram.com/letitouttt/ The quote I read at the end. Squishy Hearts, "Rejection as Protection", Inner Teenagers, Dating and Breakups with Mari Andrew, Author and Illustrator [UPDATED REPOST]
This is a rerun of a 2019 episode from the archives with author and illustrator Mari Andrew. She is a present observer of her world and has the impressive talent to take her keen observations and translate them into relatable art. Fittingly enough, we ran into each other in the East Village, the neighborhood we both lived at the time, and soon she came over to record. In this conversation, we cover “rejection as protection”, creative routines, money in NYC, feeling raw after breakups, transitions and how they make us fertile for growth, her specific practice of gratitude, and her useful body image advice. Season Finale: Transitions & Connection, the Moon, & Astrology with Astrologer & Cosmic Rx Co-Founder Madi Murphy 🌗
This week I spoke with astrologer and cosmic consultant Madi Murphy, who combines her spiritual teachings with practical, actionable steps--and so much humor. This is Madi’s second time on the show. We first connected in 2017, when she owned a coffee shop in Brooklyn, and I happened to be interviewed by a reporter doing a story on her shop. Eventually I met Madi and we ended up doing the first ever live podcast recording in her space.Since then she’s made a major career and life pivot and, in this season finale episode, we unpack all she’s learned in a light, fun conversation. We talk about how her Saturn return led to her call off her wedding and start her new business (the Cosmic Rx), how we can use astrology to connect with each other, our collective connection to the moon, and much more. Prioritizing Connection, Care, and Creativity with Singer-Songwriter Dana Williams 🎄
This week I spoke to singer-songwriter Dana Williams about her career in music, how studying poetry at Sarah Lawrence informed her songwriting, and her new holiday album. Raised on singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, she brings a jazzy nonchalance to her delivery while drawing big emotion from the subtlest vocal movement. Dana's music was featured in the Oscar-winning film Whiplash and she has collaborated with artists like Freddie Gibbs, Boogie, and Rejjie Snow. We covered her habits and routines, navigating grief and change, prioritizing community, what she's been learning lately, how gentleness helps her creatively, what she's wanting to prioritize, how she learns through creative collaboration, and more. Victoria Jane on High level Human Design - Authority, Living Your Design with Ease, and What It All Means ⭐️
This week, I share my conversation with Victoria Jane about Human Design, a system of personality mapping that I have found useful. After finding herself burnt out working in Silicon Valley, Victoria discovered her Human Design, which eventually led her to a career in helping others use it. We talk about ease vs. challenge, how Human Design relates to other personality charting systems like Enneagram and astrology, alignment, trusting rest and creation cycles, decision making, and more. If this is your first time hearing about Human Design, feel free to start by looking up your own chart. Also, if you go back to my archive, there are several episodes with other human design readers I've had on the show (linked below) that you can look into to learn more about the basics of Human Design and simply hear other perspectives.
