Chris Barnes on the Evolution of Sports Science in Professional Soccer

Sports science is a common thing in elite and professional sports today – but it hasn’t always been that way. Over the past 25 years in his career at high-level sports, sports scientist and consultant Chris Barnes has seen how sports science has evolved and gained prominence. When he began his career as a sports scientist with Middlesbrough FC, Chris noted that sports science was only at the periphery of professional sports. But nobody understood what it was and how it could be used. Yet, as Chris progressed through his career—working with several other English soccer clubs and associations such as UK Basketball and UEFA—so did sports science. While today’s sports science is an entirely different animal from 20 years ago, Chris highlights an enduring wisdom he learned on the field: that sports scientists need to cultivate relationships. Chris joins me today to share his insight on how sports science has evolved and integrated into professional sports. He shares how he started his career as a sports scientist and eventually pivoted to start his consultancy business. He describes how and when a sports scientist should share data with coaches and athletes. And he also highlights the importance of generating usable insight from scientific data, and underscores the value of building relationships in the work of a sports scientist.   It’s good to create information and knowledge, but a sport scientist has to find a way to translate that information into something meaningful in the field. – Chris Barnes   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: What inspired Chris to take the path of physical preparation The risky world of professional sports and how Chris started his consultancy work Bringing sports science into elite professional sports The start of Chris’ work as a sport scientist Introducing science, information, and insights without overwhelming coaches and athletes Making sports science more effective and the importance of generating insights from data The value of building relationships in a sports scientist’s role How sports science has integrated into professional and elite sports over the years The development of multi-directional capability in soccer What makes a well-structured football training program Getting the right balance between information creation and information use What the “Cradle to the Grave” approach means The source of Chris’ success in the sports he has worked in   Connect with Chris Barnes: High Performance Football Chris Barnes on LinkedIn Chris Barnes on Twitter Email: chrisbarnes60@gmail.com   Stop the Frustration! Mike Coval on Developing a Complete High School Athlete

It can be challenging to coach a high school athlete. Caught between training and studying, these young athletes have a lot of things going on in their lives and can be prone to fatigue and exhaustion. Especially during the COVID-era. Former IFAST intern Mike Coval knows this all too well. Mike is the owner of COVAL Fitness, a personal training studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Over the last 10 years, Mike has worked with countless high school athletes to improve their physical fitness and performance. Though Mike has observed that more and more kids take ownership of the training process despite its challenges, he suggests that coaches can still take their support for young, high school athletes to the next level by adapting their program to an athlete’s progress and lifestyle outside of the gym to develop a complete athlete. Mike joins me today to share his philosophy in training and developing high school athletes. and illustrates the role of mindset and sense of ownership in a high school athlete’s training. He explains what his “Big Body Challenge” is and describes how he uses it to help his high school athletes improve their nutrition. And last but not least, he highlights the importance of focusing on movements when training a new athlete and underscores how a coach can support their recovery.   The kids who take ownership of their training are the ones who get the best results. – Mike Coval   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Mike’s background and how COVID impacted his company Trends Mike sees when it comes to training high-school-age athletes The importance of ownership and responsibility How coaches assess a high school athlete’s nutrition Mike’s Big Body Challenge and his process for educating high school athletes on the importance of nutrition Sleep debt and how the pandemic affects the sleep hygiene of high school athletes How Mike coaches high school athletes on sleeping habits Why Mike focuses on refining movements when coaching new high school athletes The role of traditional strength and weight training in contemporary high school athletic programs Coaching movement, speed, and agility and the power of building trust Helping athletes manage fatigue and balance between training and personal life Mike’s advice to young coaches   Related Content: Physical Preparation with Mike Coval   Connect with Mike Coval: Coval Fitness Coval Fitness on Instagram Coval Fitness on YouTube Mike Coval on Instagram Mike Coval on Facebook EMAIL: mike@annarbortrainer.com     Stop the Frustration! Donovan Santas: The Evolution over 21 Years in Pro Baseball

Over his 21-year-long career in professional baseball in different capacities, Donovan Santas has seen some of the most momentous changes and shifts in the sports industry – from how strength training is implemented to how the strength & conditioning coach’s role has gained prominence. But Donovan didn’t always have the fancy tools he has access to today As a young man, Donovan grew up working on a farm in the middle of Wisconsin, in a town with only 750 people. Yet, he loved sports and knew he wanted to do something with it as a career. So, after graduating high school with 20 other kids, Donovan went on to study Exercise Science at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and interned at the University of Arizona. He soon found himself surrounded by unique and talented athletes, driving his desire to keep working in his profession. After a couple of internships with other teams including the Cleveland Indians, Donovan eventually joined the Toronto Bluejays, where he spent 18 years of his career as a Strength & Conditioning Coordinator before joining the New York Yankees as the Assistant Director of Player Health and Performance. Donovan joins me today to share his insights on the evolution of professional baseball and the sports industry. He illustrates how people viewed strength & conditioning coaches when he began his career and how the role has expanded over the years. He describes what off and in-season training sessions look like for his teams and underscores the importance of recovery. And he also discusses how coaches and other staff collaborate to create an athlete-centric environment where players can perform at their best level.   They call it a game of adjustments: you adjust to the world around you, the game, and everything that happens. – Donovan Santas   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Donovan’s background and how he became interested in the world of physical preparation How strength & conditioning in pro baseball is different from when Donovan started his career What a training program looked like 20 years ago versus how it looks today The most significant shifts Donovan has seen in the industry The power of breathing and the impact of the FMS What people and organizations thought about strength & conditioning coaches then and now Donovan’s first year in the major leagues How collaboration within an organization helps athletes perform at the highest levels What a typical training session looks like for Donovan and the importance of recovery Integration and how coaches and other staff work together to cultivate an athlete-centric environment How curiosity kept Donovan thriving in the industry through the years   Connect with Donovan Santas: Donovan Santas on LinkedIn Donovan Santas on Instagram Email: d.santas@yankees.com   IFAST University is BACK! Jon Pope on Resilience, Stress Physiology, and Changing Beliefs

Jonathan Pope is an embodiment of what it means to be resilient. As a high school athlete, Jon was a six-foot, 150-pound, right-handed baseball pitcher who could throw a ball 90 miles an hour. But he needed to get bigger and throw harder if he wanted to play at the Division I level. Thinking that the gym would be his key to becoming a more powerful athlete, Jon devoted his efforts to lifting weights. In his sophomore year, Jon had a serious accident and by the time he started playing in college, he already had one surgery. He invested his time and resources into his recovery to be the best athlete he could be, but the more motivated he was, and the harder he worked, the worse things became. Five surgeries later, Jon was convinced that there had to be a better way. Wanting to figure out how he could fix himself, become the best he could be, and help others do the same, Jon dedicated himself to strength & conditioning, physical therapy, and movement. Jon continues his mission to this day through his strength & conditioning facility, Ethos Colorado, his coaching work at Precision Nutrition, and his book, Building the Elite, which he co-authored with Craig Weller. Jon joins me today to share his insights on what makes a person resilient. He illustrates how perception can impact stress and how stress can affect workout performance. He highlights the difference between a challenge-based and fear-based response, and reveals how mindfulness and practices of attention can help alleviate stress. And last but not least he shares the tools and methods coaches can use to help their clients take their performance to the next level and underscores the power of vulnerability.   How you think about things has a massive impact on your stress response and the underlying physiology of what occurs in your body – Jon Pope   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Jon’s background from collegiate athlete to Ethos Colorado owner and author The importance and meaning of resilience The physiology of stress and how perception changes a client’s workout experience The differences between a challenge-based and a fear-based stress response What makes special ops selection programs challenging Predictability and ambiguity in workouts Attention, its different types, and its uses in workouts Tools to help clients focus on their workout The various domains of attention and how to cultivate them Using attention and its practices to help manage stress response The role of beliefs, expectations, and stories in training and performance Practical mental skills coaches, trainers, and rehab professionals can use to help clients elevate their progress The power of vulnerability and relationships   Connect with Jon: Ethos Colorado Ethos Colorado on Facebook Ethos Colorado on Instagram Building the Elite Building the Elite on Instagram Book: Building the Elite: The Complete Guide to Building Special Operators by Jonathan Pope and Craig Weller Jonathan Pope on LinkedIn   IFAST University is BACK! Joey Burton on the Life and Times of an NBA Skill Development Coach

Basketball Skill Development Coach Joey Burton saw at a very young age what bad coaching looked like. As a high school player, Joey felt frustrated over his coaches’ blatant display of politicizing and favoritism. Though this experience discouraged him from playing in high school, Joey remained passionate about basketball and eventually played in college. Being a collegiate basketball athlete opened Joey’s eyes to what high-end basketball looked like, and encouraged him to eventually become a coach. Whether it was in the collegiate or private setting, Joey has set himself apart from others due to this attention to detail, as well as helping athletes improve their ability to shoot the basketball. So today, Joey joins me to discuss skills development in basketball. He highlights why it’s important to not just care for your athletes, but also to let them know you care about their development. He explains the value of demonstrating success in the early stages of coaching to improve buy-in. And he also reveals the leading factors that determine great basketball players from good ones, and underscores the power of building athletes’ mental focus and character throughout a program.   Players don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care about getting them better. – Joey Burton   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: What led Joey to the world of basketball skill development His philosophy on shooting effectively Joey’s evaluation process for NBA clients His tips and tricks on building trust and rapport, and getting clients to buy-in a program The critical role of demonstrating success in the buy-in process Why it’s important to balance rehearsed shooting reps, along with live, game actions as well The reason players need to be able to demonstrate their skills under stress and fatigue Why Joey emphasizes building athletes mental strength and character over the long-term Getting an athlete to listen to your advice and the importance of giving them the room to ask questions The role of humility in coaching athletes Teaching basketball players to shoot more effectively What separates great shooters from decent ones The cornerstones of shooting a basketball and the dynamics of balance and drift How parents can support their children’s interest in basketball How rushing children’s development process in basketball can impact performance later in life   Connect with Joey: Joey Burton Website Joey Burton on Instagram Joey Burton on Twitter   Stop the Frustration! Dr. Sarah Martin on EVERYTHING Pelvic Floor

Dr. Sarah Martin completed her doctorate in Neurobiology from the University of Kentucky in 2008. While in graduate school, one of her peers introduced Sarah to T-Nation, kicking-off her interest and love for lifting and physical preparation. After completing her PhD in Neurobiology, Sarah further pursued her interest and returned to the University of Kentucky to study Physical Therapy under a Mary McMillan Award from the American Physical Therapy Association and graduated in 2014. Today, in addition to general sport and orthopedic-based physical therapy, Sarah is specially trained in women’s pelvic health issues. Sarah has been successfully treating her patients over the past five years by incorporating her background in sports and strength conditioning with her continued education in biomechanics, neurology, and breathing into her practice. Sarah joins me today to discuss the physiology and function of the pelvic floor muscles. She describes the different issues related to it and illustrates the relationship between the pelvic floor muscles and the diaphragm. She explains why many people don’t talk about the pelvic floor, and describes the necessity of motion for internal organs. And last but not least, she underscores the value of getting real-world experience versus simply learning from the internet and highlights the role of empathy in clinical practice.   The pelvic floor is integrated with the autonomic nervous system. It’s a huge part of stress and managing it. – Dr. Sarah Martin   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: How a knee injury led Sarah to the world of physical therapy Getting started on working with patients with pelvic floor dysfunction Sarah’s transition from PT generalist to pelvic floor specialist The importance of exploration and experimentation The pelvic floor muscles’ role in the body Why there’s a lack of informational discussions about the pelvic floor’s essential functions The relationship between the diaphragm, the pelvic floor, and breathing Why we’re seeing so many issues with the pelvic floor today The role of the pelvic floor in stress, stress management, and lifestyle Incontinence, constipation, and other pelvic floor issues Sarah treats in her practice Sarah’s assessment process for people with pelvic issues Educating the “internet expert” and how Sarah communicates her methodology to her patients The value of establishing foundational motion How Sarah’s treatment model and approach evolved over the years Understanding and respecting the internal organs’ need for motion Why clinicians need to have empathy Creating movement by cultivating relaxation and supporting inhibition Why a contracted muscle system can’t execute good movement How being a parent has changed Sarah’s outlook on training and therapy   Related Content: Physical Preparation with Bill Hartman Bill Hartman on Building a Powerful and Pain-Free Body After 40 Mike & Bill Hartman Zoom Q&A Call Replay   Connect with Dr. Sarah: Sarah Martin on Instagram     Stop the Frustration! Grant Downie on Recruitment, Success and Selling the Dream in Sports

Grant Downie is a consultant in medical and performance solutions for elite sports. In his childhood days, Grant saw how physical therapists worked on the playing field, treating athletes and their injuries. The role appealed to him as it posed an opportunity for him to improve a person’s quality of life. He soon became a chartered physiotherapist in 1984, volunteering in sports like rugby and football as he worked for the UK’s National Health Services. Later, Grant’s love of people enkindled in him the passion to develop personal and soft skills that make an impactful difference. His distinguished career at the heart of professional football and elite sports spans over 34 years and includes full-time and advisory roles at Manchester City FC, Hamilton Academical FC, and others. And in 2013, Grant received the title Officer of the British Empire from the Queen in recognition of his work in sports physiotherapy and service to youth. Grant joins me today to discuss what it takes to be a great high-performance director and how anyone can succeed in any leadership role. He illustrates how leaders can “sell the dream” of an organization to its staff and reveals the role of recruitment in elite sports. He describes the difference between talkers and reflectors and discusses how leaders can manage both to focus on athletes’ needs. And last but not least, he highlights what it means to train an injured athlete, and underscores the value of connecting with the person behind an injury.   Being a high-performance leader is not only about how you leave a mark on your staff. It’s what you leave on the organization and the systems you leave behind. – Grant Downie   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: The beginnings of Grant’s career in elite professional sports How the physical therapy profession in sports has evolved over the years The dangers of limiting oneself to one sport and how sports professionals can broaden their horizons The importance of remembering that children are not “mini-adults” and letting them have fun in athletics The primary role of performance leads in a large sports club Traits and skills that separate great high-performance directors from good ones Why academic intelligence is essential to strength & conditioning professionals The role of emotional intelligence and intuition in the performance lead role The need to ensure that every individual in an organization has development plans The value of showing authenticity as a leader The factors that indicate the success of a performance lead How high-performance directors and leads can get everyone in the same direction of growth Why the setting of expectations in an organization is critical to its performance The role of high-performance leaders and directors as educators Cultivating psychological safety and how to work with reflectors and talkers The most challenging part about being a performance lead or high-performance director Why Grant thinks being a high-performance director can be lonely   Connect with Grant: Grant Downie Website Grant Downie on LinkedIn Grant Downie on YouTube Grant Downie on Soundcloud Grant Downie on Twitter   Make 2021 Your Best Year Yet!
