Rick Franzblau on Bucketing Athletes, Arm Care, and Reverse Engineering the Sport of Baseball

In this day and age, how do you find ways to truly “stand out” as a strength and conditioning or performance coach? Why is it important to understand the game, and then work backwards when designing a training program? And how do you know when what started off as “good” adaptations have actually started to NEGATIVELY IMPACT your athletes? If you’ve ever thought about any of these questions, then you’re going to love today’s episode! Rick Franzblau has spent close to 20 years at Clemson University. He’s currently is in his ninth year as director of Olympic sports performance, and 10th with baseball. At Clemson, Franzblau has worked with 11 ACC championship track & field squads, eight individual NCAA champions and seven track & field Olympians. In 2021, he worked with the national championship men’s soccer team. And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into biomechanics, arm care, and helping your athletes perform at their highest level!   It starts with output and we start to peel back layers in the decision tree there. – Rick Franzblau   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Rick’s background and how he got started in the world of physical prep. How he got to Clemson, and why he’s never left! Why is it important to understand the game and then work backwards when designing programs or interventions? The difference between S&C and player development and sports performance. How throwing a baseball versus a football are different on the body. Rick’s thoughts on “arm care,” and how he sells it to his athletes. Why creating adaptations are important, but also knowing when a good adaptation has gone too far. How YOU as a coach can show value outside the traditional role as an S&C coach. The BIG Question. A really fun lightning round where we talk snowy New York colleges, his biggest takeaway from working with Bill, his favorite thing about working in baseball, and what’s next for Rick Franzblau.     Connect with Rick: Rick on X/Twitter   Related Links: Dr. Jenn Reiner-Marcello on the Intersection between Movement and Sports Science in Baseball Aaron Cunanan on Developing a Sports Science Team in Pro Baseball Bill Hartman’s Unified Health and Performance Network   Stop the Frustration! Erik Huddleston on Sport-Specificity, Adaptability and Co-Working with Athletes in the NBA

If you’ve ever followed an NBA season, you might think that once the regular season or playoffs are over, that the performance coaches get to take a 2, 3 or even 4 month break before getting back into that pre-season grind. But unfortunately, that’s just not the case. In fact, in most cases once the season is done, a whole new set of responsibilities emerge – and we’re going to lean into that topic today with my guy Erik Huddleston. Erik is currently a sports performance coach for the Indiana Pacers. Prior to his current role, he also worked as a G-League performance with the Indiana Mad Ants, was director of performance at the one and only IFAST, and also interned with both Texas Tech and Indiana University basketball. And in this show, we’re going to take a behind the scenes look at being a performance coach in the NBA!   When you improve how something looks and feels, but it also has transferability over to the court, what else can I ask for? – Erik Huddleston   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new with my guy E since the last time we chatted. What the transition is like going from the private sector to the NBA world. Why ADAPTABILITY is so crucial if you want to work in pro sports. The biggest lessons he learned early on, and why there’s so much more to it than just coaching. How the roles of an NBA performance coach shift when the season is over. His role during NBA Summer League, and what he tries to get done during that 2-3 week stretch. The role consistency plays in doing your job at a high level. What goes into the job OUTSIDE of coaching? Interactions between teams, and how to improve communication across coaches to ensure athletes get the best possible outcomes.     Connect with Eric: Eric on Instagram   Related Links: IFAST Basketball Insiders Erik Huddleston on the Life of a Serial Intern Mike Irr Podcast Chris Chase Podcasts Eric Schmitt on Program Design and Agile Periodization in the NBA   Become an ELITE Performance Coach at IFAST Basketball Insiders! Andrew Ryland on Shared Mental Models, Integrated Shoulder Work, and Fighting Giant Humans

Football and rugby may be two of the most violent – and exciting – sports on the planet today. So how do you go about preparing young athletes for these sports? How do you get them prepared for the physical nature and brutality they’ll be exposed to on the field? And how can you make sure that the best overall athletes stay in the game long enough to show what they can REALLY do? Well luckily for you, my guy Andy Ryland and I are going to cover all that in today’s show! Andy is USA Football’s senior manager of education and training. He has consulted with programs, coaches and athletes at every level – from high school, the NCAA, NFL and professional and international level rugby. He is widely recognized as a foremost expert on tackling and the preparation for contact with athletes, and today, we’re going to take a deep dive into everything collision sports!   When you talk to an elite level player they see the lean, the little movement, they see the opening before it’s there because their pattern recognition and game database is so massive. – Andy Ryland   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A brief bio about Andy and how he got started in physical prep. His career arc and how he ended up working with USA Football. For the uninitiated, the biggest similarities and differences between rugby and football. Andy’s thoughts on building more physically robust athletes. The biggest differences you see across levels – from youth, to collegiate, to professional athletes. Why it’s so important to help late-maturing athletes to “stay in the game.” Chinks in the armor: What are the biggest gaps he’s seen in the preparation of athletes? And how can we address these? At the youth level, what we’re doing well – and areas where we still need to improve Tackling prep: How do you get kids mentally and physically ready to run into and tackle each other? Mike Irr on Mountaintop Goals, Embracing Change and Life in the NBA

What is life REALLY like in the NBA? What are the pros and cons of being in that space? And if you ever leave, what’s it like transitioning into the private training space? If you’ve ever wondered about any of these questions, today’s guest is uniquely qualified to answer all of them! Mike Irr is the owner of Alpha Athletic Development, a private training facility in Atlanta. But prior to his time there, he also spent over a decade in the league – with stops in Chicago, Charlotte, Golden State, and Atlanta. Oh – and don’t forget that short stint as a PT student at IFAST as well! So in today’s episode, we’re not only going to look at what like if like in the NBA, but how to be successful both there and in the private sector!   If you’re a guard I want you to be strong, but I also need you to get by somebody on the court. – Mike Irr   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A little bit about Mike and how he got started in the world of physical preparation. His career arc and all the stops he had along the way – from UCONN, to the NBA, to IFAST, and then back to the NBA. What life is really like in the NBA, and what the day-to-day job entails. Contrasting what life is like “in the league” versus what it’s like in the private sector. How he can leverage his time and what he learned in the NBA into his coaching today. How his philosophy has shifted and evolved since he first got started in the game. The intersection between S&C and PT, and how to better blend the two. Should strength coaches become PT’s? And what potential advantages are there to doing that? Tyler Koch on How to Build an Elite Fighter Pilot

Okay serious question – have you ever pondered what the training is like for fighter pilots? Maybe it’s just me, but as a young kid growing up watching Top Gun I always wondered what training looked like for guys like Maverick, Goose, Iceman and Slider…and somehow I just knew it probably took more than just playing beach volleyball! And today, we’ve got someone that can really help us shed some light on this topic! Tyler Koch has over 13 years of experience in the field of Human Performance. Most recently, he worked as a Subject Matter Expert for the United States Air Force, overseeing Human Performance within the F-35 fighter pilot community. He was also integral in founding the first ever Human Performance Initiative within Undergraduate Pilot Training. And in this show, we’re going to take a deep dive into what it REALLY TAKES from a physical perspective to be a fighter pilot!   If you can deadlift 1.5-2x your body weight, and if you can do that, your ability to pull G’s is going to be improved. – Tyler Koch   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: How Tyler got started in the world of physical preparation. His career arc, and how he ultimately he ended up working for the Air Force. What physical tools does it take to be a fighter pilot? And is there a “perfect” archetype? The background of physical development in the pilot community, and how it’s evolved over the years. How Tyler trained his pilots, and how the various levels of school along the way prepared them differently Neck Training 101: How race driving and flying are somewhat – but not entirely – similar. The biggest pros and cons of working within the military, and the concept of building a culture within a culture. The BIG Question. Lucy Hendricks on Listening, Empathy and Effective Communication in the Gym

If you’re interested in learning more about soft skills, or how to really communicate with your clients and athletes, THIS is the show for you. Lucy Hendricks is the co-owner Enhancing Life gym in Lexington, Kentucky. Here, she’s created a sanctuary for people sidelined from exercise due to pain, chronic disease, autoimmune issues, or sedentary lifestyles. Her gym takes an individualized approach, meeting clients where they are physically and mentally, and focuses on removing barriers and reducing anxiety to ease them into fitness. And today, Lucy and I are going to take a deep dive into the exact skills that has made her gym such a success!   Most people join the industry because they have a passion for fitness and lifting. No one joins the industry because they want to be someone’s friend. – Lucy Hendricks   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: The very cool story behind how Lucy got started in the industry (and yes I am biased for this one). How she moved from a “biomechanics coach” to one who focuses more on the soft skills. Why creating the appropriate gym culture was so important to Lucy. Her keys to creating better relationships and improving rapport with your clients and athletes. How to listen and empathize with your people, without taking their problems home with you. Lucy’s thoughts on communicating more effectively both in and out of the gym. Ways to have discussions about pain and injury, without contradicting medical advice they may have received.
