Ep. #58: Late Blooming Conversations, Part 1
In this episode, Robin shares with us an inside look into one of her four weekly support groups she facilitates for women coming out late in life. With permission from all the women in this small group, on this particular day, they collectively agreed that the conversation that transpired was just too good NOT to share with her podcast listeners. In this episode you will hear and learn about . . .We initially opened the conversation by pondering the following comment/question: “Do you find that it’s much more intense dating women than men?”Discussing that first question then morphed into us discussing THIS question: “Have you found it hard to not get caught up in the ‘new relationship energy’ feelings? What are some tools you would suggest to help with those intense ‘new relationship energy’ feelings?”Feel the feelings. Feel ALL the feelings. BUT…do NOT let new relationship-energy cloud your judgment! What is New Relationship Energy? (NRE)? And is it something to avoid, fear or dive-into?How do recovering people pleasers handle the intoxicating feelings from new relationship energy? Are there tools to deal with new relationship energy? How do you transition, within a relationship, from ‘new relationship energy’, to something more sustainable? From obsession to success & sustainable? The importance of our female friendships and their ability to tell us with loving kindness the difficult things we need to hear about ourselves.Setting realistic expectations for yourself, AND within a relationship. The value in maintaining personal autonomy within your relationship. While sounding cliché, the critical nature of communication in ALL of our (close) relationships.Trusting our feelings and our intuition.Tools for our personal growth.Having everything, but still feeling, “...is this it?”If somebody would have just said this to me when I was a little girl . . .Wanna support our “Coming Out Late” podcast? Ep: #57 - Holy Sh*t! I'm (STILL) Gay! Oh Thank You Lesbian Lords!
In this episode, Robin is being interviewed by Annie McKinnon, creator and Host of “Talking All Things LGBTQ”. With a full year under her belt, since starting her own podcast and coming out to the world in the first few episodes, this is an interesting inside look at Robin’s recount of her story a year later, as well as her reflecting on the many lessons she has learned along the way. One thing she knows for sure, is that loving a woman has been a beautiful journey and “easier” for her, than loving and being involved with a man, but? It is not always easy either! In this episode you will hear and learn about . . .Sleep-walking through life, then married with children for 28+ years - but the Universe was whispering a different message to me.Compulsory-Heteronormativity and deep social conditioning.Fearing the unknown; we fear what we do not understand. What is homophobia? Is it innate? Is it real? Is it suppressed? Learned?Stuffing down and numbing the feelings.Unconventional research to figure this sh*t out! And meeting the women who gave me absolute affirmation, confirmation and validation. The “Aha!” moment; and how did that feel - in the moment? The painful Messy Middle, dealing with my divorce and telling my children. That moment when I knew my life, (moving forward), was never going to be the same.Coming clean to my loved ones - regardless of their potential reactions.Through self-assessment and self-reflection, you will learn your attachment styles, love languages, and self-love.Learn by doing: educating ourselves with every interaction and every relationship we have, and asking yourself: are you well-aligned with this person in all aspects of being human?Book:, “Attachment Theory: by JoanOur awakening to our sexuality is our super power!Unlearning old values and beliefs. Is that MY belief or someone else’s ‘voice’?Q: “When can I put all this (difficult stuff) behind me?” A: “When you take the time to put it in front of you.”Wanna support our “Coming Out Late” podcast? Ep. #56: Late Blooming Break-Ups w/Samantha Fox
In this episode, Robin discusses the in’s and out’s of relational compatibility, emotional EQ, timing, chemistry and of course, ‘curiosity’ with friend, colleague and Lesbian Curiosity Coach herself, Samantah Fox.In this episode you will hear and learn about . . .Figuring out chemistry: even with video-chatting, and audio-texting constantly, ‘chemistry’ may be evident for some, and not for others; everyone processes at their own pace and in their own way.The importance of understanding each other’s ‘intentions’ for meeting, AND, being open and honest about your wants, needs, intentions and expectations. The importance of gaining CLARITY!The importance of understanding your own “triggers” and what makes you put your guard-up and what you can do to avoid misunderstandings and miscommunications. The importance of REALLY recognizing when you and another person are misaligned. It is SO common, (and SO unhealthy) for us to, (all along the course of getting to know someone), hope and dream for ‘her’ and for ‘things’ to be a certain way, when they really aren’t.The necessity of self-assessment and self-awareness in order to figure out what you want and need in a relationship; AND, be open to the possibility that those things you think you need and want may change and evolve. How much it matters that two people are, (as much as possible), in very similar points in their lives as they try to enter into a relationship with one another, (i.,e., just divorcing, the messy middle, new to dating, been out for several years, in an open marriage, not out to anyone yet, etc.).No matter where you are in the “Coming Out Late” journey, the necessity of learning who you are; being rigorously honest with yourself and others.Wanna support our “Coming Out Late” podcast? Ep.#55: Coming Out Late in the Land of Oz
In this episode, Robin continues to break the mold in the world of LGBTQ podcasting by introducing us to one of her listeners, Michelle, hailing all the way from Australia. Robin was so struck by a note she received from Michelle, that she knew she had to share it with her listener’s, with MIchelle’s consent of course. Robin also knew that the impact of Michelle’s words and all the sentiment behind them would be better spoken by Michelle herself. So, Michelle agreed to read her own letter to Robin, aloud, for the Coming Out Late audience.Whether covered directly, or implied, this episode touches upon topics which get us thinking about . . .The universal nature of coming out late, no matter where in the world we live. The effect of women in non-traditional, but male-dominated occupations. Is it a woman’s responsibility to help make a man feel ‘whole’ if he feels emasculated or threatened by a woman?Being with men, cutting off bits of myself and making myself smaller in order that they would feel like men. Many of the late in life stories include complex arrangements and rearrangements of marriage and children and Incredibly courageous and challenging journeys. This guest doesn’t have children, and is not married. There is more to “identity” than just our sexuality.A life lived out of other people's expectations is a life dominated by fear and resentment.Being honest with other women, from the very start.Am I an “L”? A “B”? Or maybe a “P”? Do we need labels? How do I flirt with a woman?Do I now need to dress differently and wear beanies?Which life-lived is my real reality? Everything feels completely flipped upside-down, or sideways, or completely averse.Sexual identity versus cultural conditioning; internalized homophobia, people pleasing and the female anatomy. It seemed that the rainbow world offered many possibilities for stepping out of one cage and into another.Wanna support our “Coming Out Late” podcast? Ep. #52: Coming Out Late AND Bisexual, Part 2
In this Part 2 episode, Robin continues the conversation with the people in her weekly Bisexually Speaking support group continuing to discuss what it’s like to not only come out late, but come out late AND bisexual - it’s a complex journey. Robin’s weekly support group, Bisexually, is not always recorded, but we collectively agreed that it was time to record this conversation in an effort to begin dispelling the many myths surrounding being a bisexual, and coming out late today. The Bisexually Speaking support group gives participants the chance to talk-out and tell their stories regarding all of the different ways that coming out as bisexual can look in ‘today’s’ gay world - all in a virtual, private, safe, and supportive environment. This pre-recroded, casual, roundtable discussion covers a whole range of topics, things to consider, lots to reflect on, and reveals just some of the many challenges a woman might face if coming out late, AND coming out as bisexual. In this episode, you will learn to question and explore . . .What DOES “being bisexual” mean?.Why are ‘veteran’ lesbians so judgmental and opinionated toward late blooming bisexuals? To ‘label’, or not to ‘label’? Who’s decision is it anyway? Can I give myself permission to fall in love with whomever I want to fall in love with? Are there different “attraction” categories too?Should we react-to and stop “outside forces/strangers” from labeling and boxing-in our young children with hetero-norms?The multitude of myths about bisexuality. Was there any gay sexuality representation when you were growing up? If not, would it have made a difference in your coming out journey? Is “representing” your gay sexuality important to you?In what ways do YOU “represent”, or show-up-for your sexuality? What is the “default” and do we need to get away from it?Ask ourselves: how do I want to GIVE myself to another person? What are the different categories of attraction?Wanna support our “Coming Out Late” podcast? Ep. #49: Coming Out Late & Scared to Date, Part 2
In this Part Two episode of Coming Out Late & Scared to Date, Robin picks up the conversation where she left off last week. Last week Robin initiated an impromptu group discussion recorded in Zoom, around a topic that seems to be on everybody’s mind lately - navigating dating after coming out late. Whether you are newly out and have never dated a woman, or have had your share of dating experiences, this two-part series titled, “Coming Out Late & Scared to Date”, Robin asks her guests four basic foundational questions, as well as together, venturing off into a whole range of topics, things to consider, and lots to reflect on.In this episode, you will hear other late blooming women talk about . . .Why do you want to date? What’s motivating you to date?Being ‘Ok’ sitting in silence with yourself. All human relationships are complex; and can we learn from one another? Are you someone who “has” to be in a relationship all the time?Looking for that person who gets me, understands me and doesn’t just like the “theory of dating me”, but actually likes dating me-for-me.Is this the right time for you to be dating? Are you going through enormous life changes? Does your job exhaust you? Are you physically available to date? What is scary to you about dating?Do you fear someone really ‘seeing’ you in this authentic new version of yourself, when newly dating? How would it feel or what would it look like if we dated ourselves?Wanna support our “Coming Out Late” podcast?
