University bullshit and working out when to shut up

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us!Inger and Jason have both been dealing with challenges. For Inger it's finding time to work on her romance novels when doing a 37.5 hour week entirely on Zoom. She did, however, manage to get on Etsy and buy angry uterus stickers for her bullet journal.Jason is in Covid lockdown - again! But at least he got to take the tinny (that's a small, metal boat for non-Australian listeners) out with Shainal. The maiden voyage taught Shainal Jnr the importance of going to the bathroom before heading out in Port Phillip bay shipping lanes in 20 knot winds... Jason also answers the question: 'Can you get pulled over by the authorities when you are in a boat?' As it turns out, yes. Twice. Inger does a deep dive on University Bullshit, thanks to a great paper by Ian McCarthy, David Hannaha, Leyland Pitt and Jane M. McCarthy called "Confronting indifference toward truth: Dealing with workplace bullshit”. The paper is a brilliant explanation of bullshit and offers a framework to recognise and offers the 'CRAP' framework for dealing with it. The duo agree that managing to do a serious academic paper with the words 'crap' and 'bullshit' in it is a next level academic practice. Jason then follows up with a paper on whether or not speaking a lot in meetings is a good idea.In our 2 minute tip section, Jason shares a top tip for using your bullet journal to give you a more realistic sense of your accomplishments and Inger gloats (just a little bit) about how many bookshelves there are in her new office. We went long on this one and, honestly, Inger enjoyed it so much she did barely any snippety-doo-dah. Cue this one up for a long drive, a big gardening clean up session or epic list of house hold chores!Links to stuff we mentioned in this episode:The Bullet Journal website Paper: "Confronting indifference toward truth: Dealing with workplace bullshit” (paywalled)Ian McCarty Jnr's video eGot thoughts and feel pinions? Spooky dancing robots and the presence bleed

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us!Inger and jason have had a holiday - sort of. A lot of it seemed to involve making a dash for state borders before they closed... Jason bought a drone and Inger bought a mid life crisis car. In our work problems segment, Inger goes deep on the problem of rest, specifically, why she finds it hard and why that's not her fault. The discussion ranges broadly from bespoke chairs and elbow patches to how not to do your email on a Sunday night, via detours into pay rates for young architects and how to talk to your boss about how you spend your time. We end with a suggestion for a 'micro-activism' campaign, but we couldn't think up a good hashtag. We didn't really get around to other books, although Jason does mention he's got 'The Bullet Journal' on the go and we take a question from one of our listeners about 'The 7 habits of highly effective people' - on notice.Mentioned; ‘Rest: why you get more done when you work less’ by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang.'Work's intimacy' by Melissa Gregg'Why anxiety might be your superpower' - thesis whisperer postHow to use the mac text transform optionGot thoughts and feel pinions? That All Terrain Vehicle in Aliens Two and a treatise on Canberra parking problems

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us!It's our last episode for 2020 (don't worry, we'll be back. Jason can't get out of it now).Jason is finishing one job and starting another with a listening tour. The Jeep just got another upgrade with a lighting bar that promises to shine like 1000 suns - as soon as he gets the electrician in. He's looking forward to his holiday in South Australia because he's exhausted and ready for a holiday, even from podcasting. Meanwhile Inger is still running full tilt to the 2020 finish line, with a Thesis Bootcamp to run next week and a couple of books to get out the door (if Taylor Swift can drop a second superb album in 2020, there is no excuse for the rest of us). Mr Thesis Whisperer is trying to offset the inevitable end of 2020 crash and burn by buying her a Sun Lounger, which has become her new outdoor office. She then gives Jason a brief run through of Canberra parking problems (which aren't really problems, but it's all relative). In our work problem segment, Jason reflects on what it's like to start a new job when it's actually your old job, as he prepares to go back to the RMIT business school after a couple of years working in a central management role. The pair reflect on the difficulty of leading complex organisations in a time of Covid and the problem of 'cultural land mines' that you can set off if you don't listen carefully to what other people are worried about.Jason then wonders why he is so fucking exhausted, and does a deep dive on the subject of burnout. He points out that most clickbait articles on the internet frame burn out as a matter of individual responsibility, but is it really? After reading 6 pages of Jenny Odell's 'How to do nothing' book sent him into the academic literature about 'work life balance' and finds out some interesting things about how management style, particularly an attitude towards competition, contributes to burn out.  Which leads us to the depressing conclusion that academia has burn out built into its very DNA.Inger's 'to be read' pile is too big now, but she is finding time for romance novels, specifically re-reading Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series. She's excited the Shona Rhimes series of the books is dropping on Netflix on Christmas day because Shonda is hashtag genius. She has big plans to watch the series the day it comes out, with her twin sister, in her pyjamas. She then shares Gretchen McCulloch's article “A Mission to Make Virtual Parties Actually Fun” and describes 'Gathertown' - a hybrid video game/conferencing software, which The Research Whisperers used to host a super fun party. In two minute tips, Jason shares a scheduling hack to make sure your devices never run out of power and Inger shares how she's plGot thoughts and feel pinions? Want to ask a question? That guy who does no work on Saturdays and how to remember if one of your colleagues was on the olympic skating team (Live from #Whisperfest 2020)

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us!This recording was made from a live taping session during 'Whisperfest 2020' in front of a live crowd of around 70 people on Zoom.  In this episode, Jason and Inger tell their origin story, although they argue about the dried apricot analogy bit. Inger outs Jason as being 'Dave' in her most popular Thesis Whisperer post ever: 'The Valley of Shit'. Dave is internet famous because this post has more downloads than any other and - more importantly - has been spotted stuck to the back of doorways in university bathroom stalls. In the work problems segment, the duo tackle other people's problems, including how much to invest in software that your organisation won't provide to you, being your own PR rep, setting boundaries around social media and their top 3 favourite pieces of software that aren't Omnifocus. If you want to be on the Reg like Kate Gambier was, leave a message for the team on Speakpipe.Jason chooses three mac apps: Horo, Divvy, Hazel and the paper based Chronodex system.Inger chooses two mac apps Scrivener and the Timing app and name checks her awesome Twitter brains trust.Jason has ruled out Inger counting audio books as reading, so she can't review Too Much and Never Enough by Mary Trump, niece of that orange guy who used to be president (which is a pity, because it's amazing and like TOTALLY explains what is happening in the US right now). Jason has started reading Anti-Fragile: things that gain from disorder by Nassim Taleb, although he's finding the tiny text size annoying. Inger is reading Fully Automated Luxury Communism by Aaron Bastoni and is not sure if she should take it seriously or not. In her review she quotes from a Got thoughts and feel pinions? Gantt charting your way to heaven while Team Trump does a presser next to an adult book store

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us!We start by taking a moment to acknowledge that The Trump presidency has come to an end, ignominiously, in front of a landscape gardening gardening business, next to the 'Fantasy Island' adult bookstore in downtown Philly. Inger cried! How good is the first woman being a VP in the USA?! And how amazingly great is it that she's not white? As Inger's sister puts it,  2020 delivers a crowd pleasing plot twist, right at the end of the season. It's a bit busy in Inger's world now that everyone else has finished the semester. Jason is still dealing with the RMIT redundancy saga, but at least he can now go camping with his new Jeep tent thingy. We both own up to having irresponsible online shopping habits and Covid is TOTALLY to blame.Inger does a deep dive on the impossibility of managing projects with gantt charts and what the research suggests about how to deal with research project uncertainty. Turns out, there are a lot of strategies that researchers can employ to manage the 'chaotic, turbulent' change that is characteristic of research projects. Jason points out the academic discipline of business studies already knew heaps about this project management stuff, it's just that Inger never thought to ask.We both admit that we have not been able to read anything with the biggest election in the world looming over our heads, but have instead been glued to Twitter - so we share some of our recent favourite follows instead. Jason has discovered a cool new app, which he talks about in the two minute tips section, while Inger shares her mindful, end of the day ritual. We end by reading out a lovely reader review - if you leave one, we will read that out too! All quiet on the email front and how Jason became the mayor of Baker's Delight

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? Text us!Jason is emerging from Lockdown, getting a long over due hair cut and having cross-town adventures in his Jeep. Inger is despairing over Thesis Whisperer Jnr's decision to 'rest' from Uni again and tells us how she misread an important dress code by turning up to a Greens party celebration in Liberal party blue. Both of us agree that not much work is being done in universities while people are struggling with restructures and lay offs, but we are strangely ok with that. At least our inboxes are mostly empty.Speaking of email, in our re-jigged work problems section, email is the theme of the day. Jason does a deep dive on research on email and outlines how to save 9 weeks of work by adopting a few simple strategies. In our reading section, Inger is struggling to get through Cal Newport's 'Digital Minimalism' (mainly because she doesn't want to do the digital detox he suggests), while Jason is deriving lessons in resilience from Colonel Hackworth. Finally, Inger shares some more 2 minute calendar tips while Jason reminds us of the old time 'four square' app and how it can be used as your own Covid tracing app. Jason saves you more time and money by pointing us at the 'Alternative To' website. We went long on this one again - what can we say, we love to chat! Everything is terrible, but at least we have pandemic homewares

Can't be bothered with email or speak pipe? In this epic, no holds barred discussion Inger recounts her perception-shifting experience of being unfairly treated as a young academic and Jason reflects on how to approach work when you have had the veil ripped from your eyes. We went long on this one - it ended up being 1hr and 45m  - so we’ve edited for length.
