Callie Thorpe and Suzy Reading: Live at Treatwell

After a hectic summer, autumn means back to reality - a breather before the festive period kicks into full gear. The agenda? Taking stock of the year and investing in some you-time, something we often neglect during those summer months. So, it’s no surprise that mindfulness and self-care pique in interest as summer winds down; both peaking in popularity as search terms around this time of year, according to Google Trends. Sponsorship comes from Treatwell, the brighter way to book hair & beauty. Using Treatwell is simple and easy. You can browse online or on the app to find a salon or spa nearby and book a treatment, 24/7. With 8000+ customer-reviewed salons across the UK and Ireland and a further 22,000+ across Europe, there’s always an appointment to suit your schedule, budget and location. That means less time making frantic phone calls and more time doing the important stuff – like sipping coffee in the salon chair. You can use Treatwell’s thousands of reviews to help you pick the best place for you. We’re partnering with Treatwell to launch their newest campaign, the Mindful Mani. The Mindful Mani was born out of insights from their customers, the pressures to stay connected and the fact that the majority of us say they get manicures for maintenance, not self care. So Treatwell set out to change that. They’re encouraging their customers to take back that time, and enjoy a moment of mindfulness. The Mindful Mani is as an agreement between the customer and the salon that they’ll be using this treatment as me-time and will be plugging in and switching off during the appointment. They worked with Chartered Psychologist and Self Care expert Suzy Reading on this initiative which has even included creating Self-care toolkits for their partner salons and employees too. Head to their website to book a Mindful Mani now. The Power Hour podcast gets to know other people’s processes to greatness. Marvyn Harrison

On the show this week Adrienne speaks to the amazing Marvyn Harrison. It was Father’s Day 2018, a day that father-of-two Marvyn Harrison describes as “underwhelming”. He decided to send WhatsApp messages to a handful of friends who are fathers, saying thank you for their great work in raising the next generation. Every man replied quickly, and the group soon found itself discussing what it means to be a black dad in the UK today. “Sometimes dads get left off the radar, and black dads don’t get credit,” wrote one friend. All bemoaned the lack of a positive narrative about black fatherhood. So, he created a podcast, Dope Black Dads, to set about exploring the issue in more detail. The Power Hour podcast gets to know other people’s processes to greatness.
