#252. Why Repeating Yourself is an Essential Skill for Leaders
Today’s conversation is about the humble art of repeating yourself. As leaders, you might feel like you’re doing this constantly - saying the same thing over and over - and wondering why you have to keep at it. Sometimes it can feel soul-crushing, disrespectful, or even like a blow to your ego when you’ve expressed something in multiple ways and it still hasn’t landed. In this episode, Shelley reframes repetition as a powerful strategic tool. She shares why repetition matters for learning and how you can use it deliberately to create lasting change. Humans forget quickly- thanks to what’s known as the “forgetting curve,” we can lose up to 70% of what we’ve heard within 24 hours unless it’s reinforced. Research suggests it can take between 6 and 30 exposures for someone to retain new information.Shelley talks about how leaders and organisations can embed messages in ways that are deliberate, contextual and supported, so they’re truly remembered. She’ll also discuss the importance of building foundational knowledge, expanding on it over time and being comfortable with the fact that real progress takes patience. This is your opportunity to rethink repetition, not as a frustration, but as an essential part of learning and leadership.Connect with Shelley: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shelleyflett/Work with Shelley: https://shelleyflett.com Shelley books: https://www.shelleyflett.com/shop
