Episode 216: The 80/20 Rule

Ep. 216: The 80/20 Rule In this episode, Stacy and Sarah discuss the 80/20 rule, what it means and what you should include in that 20%.Click the picture above to be taken to iTunesIf you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 216: The 80/20 Rule Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) No lizard :( Sarah wrote another book! It's about synthesizing all the modern science around paleo philosophy. Helps explain and define all the modern conceptions of the paleo diet. When she compiled all of the science posts on The Paleo Mom, the word count was 110,000! It will be published as a kind of general paleo science book helping to elucidate everything surrounding a paleo template from diet to lifestyle to biology. Sarah is hoping to change the arguments in paleo about controversial topics into a more focused conversation on the science. And maybe people will stop reporting on paleo as a historical reenactment into a modern nutrition science movement. She'll have an idea of scheduling in about a month, tentatively released next May! She's trying to figure out how to simply present all the conversations around paleo like the dairy argument and carb argument as well as explain concepts like nightshades in pros and cons arguments. The Great Potato Debate! This show: The 80/20 Rule What should be in your 20%? Why can some people can eat gluten and I can't? The 80/20 Rule was either in The Paleo Diet or The Primal Blueprint Sarah also read The Paleo Solution and The Paleo Answer as well as Robb's Podcast. You can experience 100% of the benefits from doing the diet 80% of the time. (About three cheat meals per week). It may have been an editor's choice since there was a lot of influence from the publisher on the original The Paleo Diet book. Sarah was always into a 100% solution for herself because that's what works best for her. Sarah and Stacy avoid gluten always because of their own reactions to it Stacy recommends Rise Bakery for Gluten-Free Croissants! Sarah has a much lower tolerance for foods that would be inflammatory including nightshades, eggs and dairy. Her 20% tends to be sweets or borderline foods like nuts or corn. Make smart choices about your food and don't over indulge. In fact, over indulging might be a sign a need for emotional support. Stacy always chose Sunday after big strongman training to indulge herself and that routine helped her stave off cravings. Kelli ann says: "My first holiday gathering since becoming paleo was an EPIC fail tonight to say the least. I ate all the non-paleo foods you could think of. I do not suffer from any conditions or diseases; I became paleo simply because I believe it is the optimum diet for health and wellness. With that being said, how much damage did I honestly do? I'm trying not to feel guilty, but let's be real, I'm feeling pretty darn guilty! Do not feel guilty about food! Food is not a moral choice that should make you feel shame! There are many factors on how it would effect you, but if you don't have significant health issues, you're probably going to react only mildly. Non-celiac gluten intolerance does exist though! Overall, gluten is probably not a health promoting food, but it will probably not destroy you. We are not of the defeatist attitude that if it doesn't affect you now, it will eventually catch up with you. Outro (1:00:07)  Support us by shopping through links on our sidebars, please! Episode 214: Test, Don't Guess

Ep. 214: Test, Don't GuessIn this episode, Stacy and Sarah discuss testing your suspected ailments instead of just guessing based on symptoms. If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 214: Test, Don't Guess Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Apparently, there are rules to jinxing. So apparently the theory of menstrual synchrony is hard to actually verify and might not actually exist. The topic of today's show is "Don't Self-Diagnose!" It could be dangerous! Example: Adrenal Fatigue The symptoms for over active adrenals and under active adrenals can be very similar. You need to test cortisol to see what kind of problem you have. Don't guess based on symptoms There are many Adaptogens, but you need a testing practitioner to figure out exactly what you need. And the cortisol test is a neat spit test as well. Another example: SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) There is a breath test and a stool test to determine if you have SIBO Current thinking says that you can't treat it just with diet, you need to kill the overgrowth with antimicrobials. It seems that many people diagnosed with candida (a yeast) overgrowth based on symptoms actually have a bacterial overgrowth. Another example: Hormone Imbalance The symptoms of estrogen excess look very similar to testosteron excess. You need to actually figure out what your levels are! Food sensitivities may be the exception People want the answer on a test to prove they should eliminate a food entirely. You can still be sensitive even if a test doesn't flag something. There are also foods with no tests at all. If you still react to a food when a test says you don't have an issue, why would you continue to eat it? Question from Hanna (18:33): "Do you strongly recommend blood tests for figuring out what you should and should not eat? I follow a paleo diet but I don't know if I should adhere to anything else like AIP." If you have a leaky gut, then you likely have multiple food sensitivities that will be hard to sort out by food journaling In this case, a sensitivity panel might be very useful as guidance. But if you're self-diagnosing and diet combining without real evidence for why you should, you're probably going to have a difficult time. Maybe you're not feeling your best because of what you're not eating. Try adding more nutrient density to your diet. Once you remove all these foods, you no longer have a health promoting diet. Question from Dani (26:29): "Asked for my thyroid to be tested by my PCP bc I had concerns I was dealing with a potential Hashi's situation (my mom has it, plus hand and finger numbness, hairloss, anxiety) but my Free T4 and TSH#s came back in the middle of normal range. B12 in the middle of normal but vitamin D is deficient (no surprise). For my anxiety my PCP Rx'd me an SSRI. Considering I've had hand tingling in the night, hair loss, and anxiety could this not be just vitamin D but really a thyroid issue despite my test results? Trying to figure out what next steps should be and what I should push back on my PCP for. You ladies are my faves...never miss a podcast!" It would be best to get a full thyroid panel. This site lists what should be on the panel Sarah covers her thyroid saga in this post. You can also have conversion disorders that are different from thyroid issues. Hormones are converted in other organs and problems with that can cause thyroid symptoms Search for functional range of thyroid panel to find the optimal ranges. Such as here. Sarah will have finish her sleep challenge by next week. Check out her challenge here. Outro (38:20)  Support us by shopping through links on our sidebars, please! Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 213: What Do I Do After a Bad Reaction?

Ep. 213: What Do I Do After a Bad Reaction? In this episode, Stacy and Sarah talk about how to avoid and how to recover from a reaction to foods you eat. Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 213: What Do I Do After a Bad Reaction? Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Sarah begins the show by channeling Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins Recently, Stacy and family went to Universal and now Wesley is obsessed with Harry Potter! People were very interested in Episode 212 on skin health! Check out Stacy's first live video on her makeup and skin care routine! Stacy and Finian both are using the Beautycounter Baby Oil extensively! Check out Stacy's sale as well! Sarah's Go to Bed Challenge can be found here. Stacy and Sarah both love Pukka Teas On September 10th, Stacy turned 35 and had a wonderful weekend in Philadelphia! Track it on Instagram! Stacy and Matt went to Morimoto (home of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto), which she had done previously on her book tour with Sarah! Hope asks (13:38): "There are times when I choose to or have to eat out (food allergies here) and despite being very careful with what I order and informing the server/kitchen staff, something goes wrong in my digestive system (and I know it within minutes)...what can I take/do to lessen the negative effects and start getting my system calmed down and back on track? I know there isn't a magic bullet so to speak, just hoping for some advice on some things to do/try." Stacy says that her reactions have lessened over time, so there is hope! Chris Kresser talks about the bell curve of healing: at first you don't recognize your reactions, then they become so severe as the stand out more, then after healing they aren't as bad. There is a difference between food intolerances and allergies in terms of recovery: Intolerances have a shorter immune "memory". You may experience a lesser reaction after only 6 months to a year. Memory for allergies is much much longer. If your reactions are due to gut health, then healing the gut might make them go away! Some reactions just will never go away. And that's when you learn to live with it. There is a new product call Glutenza that helps with gluten exposure developed for celiacs who are accidentally exposed to gluten. Has digestive enzymes, prebiotics and probiotics that are intended to digest gluten and break it up before your immune system reacts to it. Digests 99% of gluten in an hour so that reactions are reduced. Intended for celiacs to make cross-contamination less of a problem, not so they can eat bread! Sarah uses it and it has not had reactions. Stacy's mom is anaphylactic to gluten and has learned to scout her food very well. Maybe if you're reacting to foods, your digestive system isn't optimized. See this post on Stacy's digestive system healing There are ways to increase your stomach acid. Supplements (HCl and Ox Bile), adding lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to your water, chewing well and not drinking during eating. How do you talk to a wait staff/kitchen staff? Do research before hand! Find a place that is allergen friendly. We us Yelp and FindMeGlutenFree. You can't ask questions of someone who won't know the answer! Some places will be more friendly than you expect. Stacy found that the Italian restaurant Maggiano's sent out the chef who custom made a meal for her around her intolerances. Know what to ask and make sure you're talking to an educated person. Don't be embarrassed! You're paying for a meal and they want you to be happy so you'll come back. They want to help you! Come up with a joke or a line to break the mood. Stacy always says: "We're high maintenance but we tip well!" Be clear and thorough with what you're looking for. Describe what you're looking for. Let them get excited about making you something special! Most waiters aren't going to be frustrated. If you get bad vibes and can't trust the restaurant, walk away! Recovery! What if you are exposed and need to heal? Sleep and rest and hydration. Like you have the flu! Nutrient density: organ meat, vegetables, broth, seafood, and vegetables. She means a lot of vegetables. And don't re-expose yourself. Check out the Paleo BRAT Diet on The Paleo Mom site. Also known as the SCABB Diet!' Pay attention and see if you can correlate something to your reactions! Episode 212: How to Heal Your Skin

Ep. 212: How to Heal Your SkinIn this episode, Stacy and Sarah talk about skin health. What should you do to heal damaged or diseased skin and what products are best for keeping it healthy? Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 212: How to Heal Your Skin Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Remember our book tour? Super fun! Listen people: DON'T put on make up while driving! Russ always says that Stacy believes that the rules don't apply to her. Stacy's products! Stick blush that Stacy uses Mascara Eyelash primer This week's topic is skin health! Sarah has lichen planus. Here's how she treated it! She also has cystic acne, psoriasis and other skin issues that improved when she changed her lifestyle Stacy had bad acne and Finian has bad eczema before paleo. We recommend watching what you eat and what you use and what you put on for reactions. You can definitely see reactions when you track them! Sarah can't eat eggs without break outs while Stacy can't eat nightshades or corn Question from Katie: "Most of my AI symptoms have shown great improvement from my dietary changes. My energy is great, my joint pain has subsided, I've lost over 30 lbs, and my inflammation has gone down so I can wear my wedding ring for the first time in a few years. But...My psoriasis has gotten significantly worse! It is now on my face and is on my eyelids and under my eyes. It is also all over the back of my neck and my scalp is terrible. It is so painful and itchy. My integrative dr suggested calendula ointment which helps temporarily. Since you had psoriasis I thought you might have some other suggestions. I really do believe I am on the right path with AIP but desperate to find relief for this! Thank you!" Sarah says that it took 10 months to see psoriasis improve. And that certain aspects really helped: organ meats, vegetables, stress reduction, sleep improvement and probiotics. Retinoic acid (Vitamin A), and Vitamin D are important for skin health. These are fat soluble vitamins obtained from meat and especially organ meats Certain amino acids like arginine and glutamine are great for repairing skin. Vitamin C helps build collagen and fixes skin damage Zinc helps with the immune system Bromelaine helps reduce bruising and swelling and healing skin. Gut health is super important for skin issues as well. Especially soil based probiotics (Go play in the dirt!). Skin is a low priority organ for your body. If you're not responding to AIP, go see a functional medicine specialist! What you put on your skin is also very important! Stacy began to take notice of what she put on her skin after meeting Trina Felber from Primal Life Organics. Gluten is in almost every skin product! Definitely check out the podcast we did with Liz Wolfe and Trina and the post Stacy did on Skintervention! Stacy's most recent beauty post is here. Features a lot on Beautycounter! See the podcast on Fermented Cod Liver Oil here. The product can be found here. Stacy's new night cream is here. The charcoal mask can be found here. Reduces pores that can be seen from outer space. Urban Decay eye shadows are here. Jane Iredale is here. Charcoal Cleansing Bar that eliminates zits is found here! Dragonfly Traditions Face Serum is here For shampoo, we use Morrocco Method and Surface Tarte and Bite Beauty are the highest rated department store products by the Environmental Working Group. All this to say: Go through your products and see what your risk factors are. See the EWG for each one. Check your cleaning and candles as well. Check out Zak deodorant for less reactive product as well. Look for those nutrients in your skin care products when shopping to also help fix your skin. You will get much more from adding foods to your diet than from what you take away. So eat those organ meats and veggies and broth! Check out The Paleo Approach for more! Episode 209: Cole and the Appendix

Ep. 209: Cole and the AppendixIn this episode, Stacy talks about her son Cole's bout with a burst appendix and Sarah explains what the appendix actually is!Click the picture above to be taken to iTunesIf you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 209: Cole and the Appendix Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Cole had appendicitis and had his appendix out over the past weekend! First, Cole had a stomachache Then, when it worsened, we saw a doctor. The doctor misdiagnosed as Norovirus On Friday, when it didn't get any better and he was in a lot of pain, Matt took him to the emergency room. He was quickly diagnosed with appendicitis, and was sent to surgery. His appendix had burst by the time they got to surgery. A ruptured appendix is a medical emergency and immediately life threatening. Cole recovered quickly, "a medical miracle"! While Stacy credits his recovery to our lifestyle, we definitely followed the protocols of modern medicine to prevent sepsis and other infections We've been walking and eating healing foods for him. What is the appendix and appendicitis? (11:17) The appendix is a little "cul-de-sac" off the large intestine Possibly a reservoir of beneficial bacteria for the gut as a reserve if the gut microbiome is wiped out. -itis means inflammation, so appendicitis is when the appendix becomes severely inflamed, filled with pus and will possibly burst. Generally, if it becomes inflamed, it will eventually burst. It can be various causes, including genetic or infectious causes. It's not very well understood. Not considered to be the cause of any specific lifestyle or diet factor. We consider paleo to be a complimentary healing factor in this case (17:47) High dose antibiotics will affect the gut bacteria, so probiotic and gut healing foods like broth will help with recovery. Cole hasn't been eating well, and doesn't like the big pills he needs. So we've been finding foods he will eat first, including puffed rice cereal We have been making him Kombucha Gummies Stacy and Sarah both eat broth rice as well for sick kids It is a journey. You might not always be perfect, but it's important to try. Stacy believed that if we were paleo, the boys wouldn't ever need to have things like appendicitis, but paleo is not a panacea. The consequences of not having an appendix are very minor and having it out does not have a huge effect. Thank you for listening!
