On today's episode, Alan talks with author and grace-obsessed communicator Philip Yancey about the challenges of these times and why we don't reflect the grace of our Savior. About Phillip I started my career working as an Editor and then Publisher for Campus Life magazine. During those ten years I learned journalistic skills (there's no tougher audience than teenagers), but every year it seemed I wrote fewer and fewer words. In 1980 my wife and I moved to downtown Chicago where I began a career as a freelance writer. (She has worked as a social worker and hospice chaplain--which gives me plenty of material to write about!) We lived there until 1992, when we moved to the foothills of Colorado. I've written over 30 books, most of them still in print, thankfully. Three of them I coauthored with Dr. Paul Brand, who influenced me more than any single person. A recent book, "Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God's Image" is a revised compilation of that content. My other favorites include "Soul Survivor" and "Reaching for the Invisible God" because both of them forced me to dig deep and get personal. I have two new books for release in 2021. “A Companion in Crisis” offers a paraphrase of John Donne’s ‘Devotions’ with commentary and application to our current suffering. My long-awaited memoir, “Where the Light Fell” will give readers a backstory of sorts, revealing the secrets of my turbulent childhood and teen years, and its impact on my written work. I'm a pilgrim, still 'in recovery' from a bad church upbringing, searching for the possibility of a faith rooted in grace instead of fear. I feel overwhelming gratitude that I can make a living writing about the questions that interest me. On Today's episode, Alan talks with author and professor Dr. Scott Burson about what is happening in our culture right now, why disgust is debilitating and why we are drawn to tribes. This is a great investigation of what's spinning in our culture right now with some practical next steps to cultivate hospitality About Scott Dr. Scott R. Burson is Professor of Philosophical Theology at Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), where he has taught onsite and online courses in philosophy, theology, and C.S. Lewis since 2008. Burson holds the Ph.D. in Philosophical Theology from Brunel University—London School of Theology (London, England), the M.A. in Theological Studies (Philosophy of Religion emphasis) from Asbury Theological Seminary, and the B.S. in Communications (Public Relations emphasis) from the University of Rio Grande (Ohio). Burson is the author of three books: All About the Bass: Searching for Treble in the Midst of a Pounding Culture War (Cascade, May 2021); Brian McLaren in Focus: A New Kind of Apologetics (Abilene Christian University Press, 2016); and (co-authored with Jerry L. Walls) C.S. Lewis and Francis Schaeffer: Lessons for a New Century from the Most Influential Apologists of Our Time (InterVarsity Press, 1998). Throughout his career, Burson has also published more than 40 articles on various subjects and has won more than 20 national awards for publication and writing excellence. He has spoken at Abilene Christian University, Asbury Theological Seminary, Taylor University, Wesley Seminary, Wheaton College, the University of Kentucky, the Wild Goose Festival, and the West Michigan Holiness Apologetics Conference. Internationally, he has addressed audiences in Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, and New Zealand. Additionally, Burson teaches a popular C.S. Lewis course that includes an academic trip to London and The University of Oxford. Prior to his current faculty appointment, Burson held administrative positions at Indiana Wesleyan University, the University of Florida, and Asbury Theological Seminary. While at Asbury, Burson served as the managing editor of The Asbury Theological Journal. As an Asbury graduate student, Burson received the senior award for excellence in Christian philosophy and was inducted into the International Society of Theta Phi—an honor society for theological students, scholars, and leaders in the field of religion. Burson is a member of the Wesleyan Theological Society, the Society of Christian Philosophers, and Heterodox Academy. Burson and his wife, Debra, enjoy immersive international travel and learning about other cultures. They have six children and three very spoiled canines: Burley, Pokey, and Bean. Returning back to the States, I planted a multiplying church in downtown Long Beach. I founded New Breed Church Planting Network which continues to train front-line 1st century style apostolic church planters, and the rest is history. I’ve served in collegiate campus churches, rural and urban churches, legacy churches, churches in public space…you name it. In a box, with a fox, I have planted Sam I am.
