EP 361: Positive Recovery with Corinna - Being the partner of a drinker.
Host: Corinna
Guest: Loraine
Being the partner of a drinker
Come and join me, Corinna Alderton, as I talk to my friend of 48 years of her relationship with a drinker.
In this frank and honest discussion you can hear the feelings and constraints of people in her position and the physical and emotional impact. It is also interesting to see the parallels in how a drinker feels and their significant others. The bonus for the drinker is, they are often numb to it all.
I hope you will find this as insightful as I did.

EP 354: Shana Epps Recovery Story
Host: Drifter
Guest: Shana Epps
My name is Shana Epps and I am the CEO and founder of Controlled Chaos where I do sobriety and life coaching and host a podcast. I tried for almost two decades to get sober but kept relapsing. Even while working in the girls and trying to raise my daughters alone. I went through bad relationships, drug addiction, and alcoholism. I finally decided to move back to my home town and get my life together. The 12 steps are a huge part of my recovery but I also used the vivitrol shot. The vivitrol shot was a game changer for me. The last almost 3 years have been amazing and my goal from here on is just to help as many women as I can.

EP 352: Horseman's Recovery Story
Host: Drifter
Guest: Horseman
Horseman is from the rural countryside located in the rainbow nation, South Africa. He has been married to the same beautiful girl, that still loves him, after more than forty four years. They have three grown up children, four grandchildren, a Labrador dog and a few chickens that scratch in the back yard.
He lost most of his hearing when he was five years old due to a freak accident at home. He experienced bullying and ridiculing as a young child because he attended a public school. His father encouraged him, due to these circumstances, to learn the martial art of karate, that resulted in him he being qualified as a young, teenage instructor, teaching others to fight. He can fortunately hear much better now, due to wireless technology for profound deafness.
Another hobby that shaped him as a young person was when he learned to ride horses. His IAS pseudonym is therefore based on his love and strong relationship with these special animals. He actually wanted to be an expert with animals like horses, but ended up as a specialist with digital machines. He was part of a musical family that helped him to become a proficient classic and blues guitar player - obviously he often turns the volume up, far too loud!
He started having drinking issues during his professional career as an international ICT Consultant. The corporate life, job pressure, travel, etc. caused him to gradually slip down the alcohol pitcher plant, while acting as a fully functional expert across the world. In spite of this he managed to protect his marriage but in the end he decided to quit his ICT career ambitions for the sake of his family.
Horseman is known for this motto: Love never fails 🌾
His life and recovery is based on Christian teachings - scriptures like 1 Corinthians 13:8 fascinated him. Horseman learned long ago that love is that one, most profound thing that can conquer any obstacle. So, although he admits that he made many mistakes he always practiced this motto to the best of his ability - both in his work and his personal life.
Finally, he is currently doing part time studying, in order to become a certified counselor / therapist. He is still an active member on the I Am Sober (IAS) App, paying back for everything he learned in that arena since 7th of April, 2020, when he joined. He has learned that the only person he can change, is himself.
"I just don't need this in my life anymore
and I want to try something new...."
-Thank you Drifter.

EP 350: Nancy's Recovery Story
Nancy Newton Bio
Nancy was born in Houston, Texas, and was a Physical Therapist turned stay at home Mom who dabbled in her Catholic church Music Ministry for a time as she was raising her 3 children. When she returned to her job as a PT at the age of 46 after a 9-year hiatus, she began her long painful descent into the slow process of becoming addicted to alcohol. This descent included a resurgence of a food/exercise addiction that she had struggled with most of her life from the early teen years but was able to recover from when she found her way into the rooms of Overeaters Anonymous in her 30’s, her first exposure to a 12-step program.
This progressed in her 50’s to more regular drinking, and by the time she was in her late 50’s and early 60’s, a full-on addiction to a daily intake of alcohol which often included a full bottle of wine or 2 very strong frozen margaritas from the local Mexican food restaurant, and perhaps some additional topping off to get through the day.
She also relapsed into her binging/starving/overexercising addiction until she was 50+ pounds heavier and suffering from extreme depression, lack of motivation and the desire to socially isolate, inability to sleep and the need for increased anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medicines to cope.
There were multiple attempts to quit alcohol and food abuse, trying therapy and even walking through the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous. These attempts were in vain until one day she discovered The Naked Mind book by Annie Grace. On August 4, 2022, she began her journey into sobriety. On the Naked Mind website she found the information that led her to the Thursday am early doors Sobertown Zoom meetings. (Thank you, Fluffy All Heart!!!) Getting out of isolation and reconnecting to others in those sessions allowed her to find the strength and courage to take the necessary steps to get sober.
She now is 19 months sober and embarking on a new life after slowly beginning to implement the tools she found necessary to her sobriety. These tools include daily Yoga, meditation, inspirational music, reading, cardiovascular exercise, healthy eating, Sobertown Zoom meetings, and reestablishing or finding new ways to connect to others. These tools allow her to go through life more mindfully, cherishing the relationships between family and friends and understanding the real meaning and purpose for her life.
In November, after a return home from a trip to Spain, she was painfully aware of her longstanding tendency to set goals and reach them while not at all being mindful or enjoying the process. It became a real source of frustration for her and the main topic of discussion in a therapy session. There, her therapist of many years, introduced her to Kirtana and the Deathbed song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1khh5AHacgU
This one song began some new insights into how she would begin to make the necessary changes in the last quarter of her life so that she would not miss out on any of the “holy” moments that give life meaning for her: Connection to others, Courage to step out of her comfort zones, Calmness and moving more slowly through her day, and following through on all Commitments she makes to others. This has become a daily practice as she starts each day.
She hopes that her story of her journey will inspire others to hang in there through the process of becoming sober. Change can be slow, and it is so important to look at this process as an unfolding of possibilities that will continue to move in a forward direction, if you commit to staying on the path. It is worth every bit of grit and determination that is required.
Nancy is retired, and currently lives with her wonderful husband of 40 years in McKinney Texas.
