Researchers Solve Decades Old Mitochondrial Mystery That Could Lead to New Disease Treatments + CBD In Sports Nutrition

SHR # 2595 :: Researchers Solve Decades Old Mitochondrial Mystery That Could Lead to New Disease Treatments + CBD In Sports Nutrition - Dr. Joseph Baur Ph.D. Associate Professor of Physiology – Jason Provenzano - Penn Medicine researchers have solved a decades old mystery around a key molecule fueling the power plant of cells that could be exploited to find new ways to treat diseases, from neurodegenerative disorders to cancer. Reporting in a new study published in Nature, researchers from the Department of Physiology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and other institutions found that the SLC25A51 gene dictates the transport of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), a fundamental coenzyme in cellular metabolism, to the mitochondria, where energy from nutrients is converted into chemical energy for the cell. A low level of NAD+ is a hallmark of aging and has been associated with diseases including muscular dystrophy and heart failure. PLUS CBD is turning up in more and more sports related nutrition products. Many people add CBD to their favorite pre-workouts and post-workout products. CBD manufacturers are catching on and including CBD in sports supplements, ergogenic aids and even post-workout protein blends. So what does CBD add to the effects of these products? Save 20% OFF all Planet Earth CBD Sports Nutrition products at https://shrnetwork.biz/POWER and use code POWER. Study discussed on today's show - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2741-7

Unique Safety Issues Associated With Virus-vectored Vaccines: Potential For Theoretical Consequences of Recombination with Wild Type Virus Strains

SHR # 2594 :: Unique Safety Issues Associated With Virus-vectored Vaccines: Potential For Theoretical Consequences of Recombination with Wild Type Virus Strains - Keith Bell - The COVID-19 vaccine will be a virus-vector vaccine. In 2003 and 2013, the World Health Organization convened informal consultations on characterization and quality aspects of vaccines based on live virus vectors. In the resulting reports, one of several issues raised for future study was the potential for recombination of virus-vectored vaccines with wild type pathogenic virus strains. Our discussion today assesses this issue formulated by the Brighton Collaboration. Higher End of normal Blood Platelet Count Could Indicate Cancer

SHR # 2592 :: Higher End of normal Blood Platelet Count Could Indicate Cancer - Dr. Sarah Bailey - UNIVERSITY OF EXETER - Blood platelet counts at the higher end of normal suggest a high risk of cancer in men aged 60 or over, and should be investigated, according to new University of Exeter research. Platelets perform a crucial function in blood, including helping blood to clot, which helps us heal wounds. However, Exeter researchers have previously found that cancer risk is significantly raised by having an abnormally high blood platelet count (more than 400 x 109/l,) a condition known as thrombocytosis. Now, they have found that cases of cancer greatly increased in older males with a platelet count on the high end of normal range (326 to 400 x 109/l), indicating that these patients should be investigated for cancer. https://www.brightsurf.com/news/article/072720515706/higher-end-of-normal-blood-platelet-count-could-indicate-cancer.html http://www.businessworld.in/article/Study-finds-higher-end-of-normal-blood-platelet-count-could-indicate-cancer/28-07-2020-302193/

A Different Angle on Improving Cognition

SHR # 2591 :: A Different Angle on Improving Cognition - Wayne Lightheart and Matt Gallant - There are many ways to improve cognition and brain function. We know the gut can cause brain-fog, cognitive decline and anxiety. Many cognitive enhancers are designed to improve brain function by over-driving the brain with stimulants. This is the first one that takes into account fixing cognitive impairment that starts in the gut. Go to http://shrnetwork.biz/brainstack and use code SHR10 to save an additional 10% off.

Exercise Induces Secretion of Biomarkers Into Sweat plus Exercise Improves Children's Blood Pressure

SHR # 2590 :: Exercise Induces Secretion of Biomarkers Into Sweat plus Exercise Improves Children's Blood Pressure - Dr. Sira Karvinen, PhD - A new study shows that in addition to blood, endurance exercise induces changes in sweat biomolecule levels. These findings lay the groundwork for the development of future noninvasive exercise monitoring systems that utilize sweat as a biomarker source. Sweating is an important part of thermoregulation during exercise, yet the potential for sweat as a biomarker source has not been established. Currently, the key limiting steps of using sweat as a biomarker source for exercise monitoring are the low abundance of biomarkers and variation in the volume of sweat in different environments and in different people. PLUS High blood pressure and arterial stiffness is a thing today in young school-aged children. A recent study showed that a very simple exercise intervention can completely reverse this condition. Rapamycin and Muscle Aging: Stronger for Longer

SHR # 2589 :: Rapamycin and Muscle Aging: Stronger for Longer - Dr. Daniel Ham, PhD - With life expectancy increasing, age-related diseases are also on the rise, including sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass due to aging. Researchers from the University of Basel's Biozentrum have demonstrated that a well-known drug can delay the progression of age-related muscle weakness. Already in our best years, our muscles begin to shrink and their strength dwindles. Unfortunately, this is a natural part of aging. For some people, the decline in muscle mass and function is excessive. This condition, called sarcopenia, affects every second or third person over 80, reducing mobility, autonomy and quality of life. Rapamycin helps to reduce senescent cell accumulation and extend lifespan by modulating mTORc1 activity and has been thought to also reduce muscle mass and protein synthesis. But is this true? Database web app discussed during the interview can be found here https://sarcoatlas.scicore.unibas.ch/ . mTORC1 signaling is not essential for the maintenance of muscle mass and function in adult sedentary mice https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31697050/

Downsizing: The Mental Side Of Carrying Muscle and Strength

SHR # 2586 :: Downsizing: The Mental Side Of Carrying Muscle and Strength - Dan Matha - Many of us in the Super Human Nation identify with being a certain size or level of strength. Often things happen in our lives where giving up some human real estate is required. Injuries, changes in physical demand, getting older. Our identification with being big and strong may trap us. Place us in a box that doing what is best for us is not easy or comfortable. How do you reconcile with making these changes? Do you still have the same net worth as a person if you’re not as big and strong as you once were? How do you give up the human real estate without giving up who we are?
