Discoveries Reshape Understanding of Gut Microbiome + New Research Predicts Whether Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Will Respond to Treatment

SHR # 2621 :: Discoveries Reshape Understanding of Gut Microbiome + New Research Predicts Whether Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Will Respond to Treatment - Dr. Kirk Bergstrom, Ph.D. – Dr. Jesmond Dalli Ph.D. - The human gut is home to microorganisms that outnumber our cells by a factor of 10 to 1. Now, discoveries by scientists at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation have redefined how the so-called gut microbiome operates and how our bodies coexist with some of the 100 trillion bacteria that make it up. The new findings appear in the journal Science and could lead to new therapies for inflammatory bowel disease and people who've had portions of their bowels removed due to conditions like colon cancer and ulcerative colitis. They also help explain why the use of antibiotics can create a multitude of problems in the digestive system. PLUS A new study led by researchers at Queen Mary University of London provides potential novel biomarkers for predicting patient responsiveness to disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients are commonly treated with disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) despite the fact that up to 50% of patients are unresponsive to treatment. Up until now, there has been no way to find out whether a patient will effectively respond to treatment. Studies discussed on today's show OMRF discoveries reshape understanding of gut microbiome - https://omrf.org/2020/10/22/omrf-discoveries-reshape-understanding-of-gut-microbiome/ . Blood pro-resolving mediators are linked with synovial pathology and are predictive of DMARD responsiveness in rheumatoid arthritis - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-19176-z

Study Provides New Estimates of Breast Cancer Risks Associated with HRT

SHR # 2617 :: Study Provides New Estimates of Breast Cancer Risks Associated with HRT - Dr. Yana Vinogradova, Ph.D. - A new study published by The BMJ today provides new estimates of the increased risks of breast cancer associated with use of different hormone replacement therapy (HRT) preparations in the UK. It confirms that HRT use is associated with increased risks of breast cancer, particularly for older women. However, it suggests that, for longer term HRT use, the increased risks are lower than those reported in a recent meta-analysis that combined the results of 24 studies. Today's study also shows a more noticeable decline in risks once HRT has stopped, compared with the same meta-analysis. The study discussed on today's show Use of hormone replacement therapy and risk of breast cancer: nested case-control studies using the QResearch and CPRD databases https://www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m3873

The Physics of Resistance Exercise

SHR # 2616 :: The Physics of Resistance Exercise - Doug Brignole - Ron Penna - Every year, countless individuals engage in a resistance training program in an attempt to either enlarge their muscle size for enhanced physical appearance, increase their muscle strength for improved athletic performance, or maintain the ability to perform the activities of daily living that are important to them. Most of these fitness enthusiasts perform standard resistance exercises, as recommended by fitness professionals, personal trainers, and friends, or as presented in books, magazines, and websites. These standard resistance exercises are generally effective for the first few months of training, during which time most new participants experience gains in both muscle size and strength. Sooner or later, however, they encounter either an exercise-related injury or a muscle-development plateau. Get Doug's book The Physics of Resistance Exercise here https://shrnetwork.biz/buildmoremuscle .
