Is This Why Post-Menopausal Women Have A Hard Time Losing Weight?
SHR # 2805:: Is This Why Post-Menopausal Women Have A Hard Time Losing Weight? - Dr. Holly A. Ingraham Ph.D. - Estrogen depletion in rodents and humans leads to inactivity, fat accumulation and type 2 diabetes, underscoring the conserved metabolic benefits of estrogen that inevitably decrease with age. In rodents, the pre-ovulatory surge in 17β-estradiol (E2) temporarily increases energy expenditure to coordinate increased physical activity with peak sexual receptivity. Here we report that a subset of estrogen-sensitive neurons in the ventrolateral ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus projects to arousal centers in the hippocampus and hindbrain, and enables estrogen to rebalance energy allocation in female mice.

How do Plant-based Burgers Stack Up Against MEAT Burgers in Protein Quality
SHR # 2804:: How do Plant-based Burgers Stack Up Against MEAT Burgers in Protein Quality - Professor Hans Stein, Ph.D. - Plant-based burgers often promise protein comparable to their animal-based counterparts, but the way protein is expressed on current nutrition labels – a single generic value expressed in grams – can be misleading. That’s because the human body does not use “protein” per se. Instead, it needs essential amino acids, which are present in proteins, but the concentration and digestibility of amino acids are different among protein sources. To account for these differences, a new standard for protein quality, the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS), was developed by the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) about a decade ago. It specifically focuses on the digestibility of essential amino acids, and aims to put more accurate tools in the hands of nutritionists and food assistance programs the world over. A new study from the University of Illinois and Colorado State University leverages the DIAAS system to understand protein quality in beef and pork burgers and plant-based burgers from Impossible™ and Beyond Meat®.

Food Scientists Create Zinc Index for Human Body
SHR # 2803:: Food Scientists Create Zinc Index for Human Body - Professor Elad Tako, Ph.D. - Jacquelyn Cheng - Zinc deficiency is prevalent around the world, and among children, these mineral shortfalls can lead to stunting, embryonic malformations and neurobehavioral abnormalities. Over several decades, science has improved understanding of zinc metabolism, but an accurate, comprehensive assessment tool for its physiological status within a human body has remained elusive. Until now.

Replacing the Traditional 'Practice Makes Perfect' Paradigms
SHR # 2802:: Replacing the Traditional 'Practice Makes Perfect' Paradigms - Prof. Nitzan Censor, Ph.D. - Learning motor skills commonly requires repeated practice to achieve improvements in performance. Based on memory reactivation frameworks at the synaptic, systems, and behavioral levels, we tested whether brief memory reactivations can induce learning in motor skills. To address this concept, we combined an experimental design spanning across 1 wk from test to retest, with brief motor memory reactivations. Results revealed that brief, continuous, and error-free reactivations of the motor skill memory were successful in inducing learning gains. Corticospinal excitability measures collected using transcranial magnetic stimulation over primary motor cortex correlated with retest and transfer performance. These results demonstrate a unique form of rapid motor skill learning and may have far-reaching implications, for example, in accelerating motor rehabilitation following neurological injuries.

How Does The Brain Create Our Perception Of Reality?
SHR # 2800:: How Does The Brain Create Our Perception Of Reality? - Dr. Heather Iriye, PhD,( Postdoctoral Fellow) - New findings from studies in both people and animals are revealing clues about how sensory information and cognitive processes interact in the brain to produce our perception of the world. The findings were presented at Neuroscience 2021, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and the world’s largest source of emerging news about brain science and health. Sensory inputs, such as sights, sounds, and touches, yield rich information about the external world. But our perception and interpretation of sensations are heavily shaped by cognitive processes such as attention, expectation, and memory. A better understanding of the neural basis of perceptual phenomena will help clarify both ordinary experiences — such as the ability to pick a single voice out of a noisy background — and disorders in which perception is altered — such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Time-restricted Eating for the Prevention of Metabolic Diseases
SHR # 2797:: Time-restricted Eating for the Prevention of Metabolic Diseases - Dr. Satchidananda Panda Ph.D. - Eating your daily calories within a consistent window of 8-10 hours is a powerful strategy to prevent and manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, according to a new manuscript published in the Endocrine Society’s journal, Endocrine Reviews. Time-restricted eating is a type of intermittent fasting that limits your food intake to a certain number of hours each day. Intermittent fasting is one of the most popular diet trends, and people are using it to lose weight, improve their health and simplify their lifestyles. "People who are trying to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle should pay more attention to when they eat as well as what they eat. Time-restricted eating is an easy-to-follow and effective dietary strategy that requires less mental math than counting calories," said Satchidananda Panda, Ph.D., of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif. "Intermittent fasting can improve sleep and a person’s quality of life as well as reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Everything You Think You Know About Fasting is Wrong
SHR # 2796:: Everything You Think You Know About Fasting is Wrong - Franziska Graef, Ph.D. Student University of British Columbia - The first show I ever did about intermittent fasting was around 2008. Since then intermittent fasting has become a cottage industry. How-to books, apps, pre-made diet plans, supplement and more. If we've learned anything from previous great ideas-tuned-fad, it's we fu-- every good thing up in the name of making it a business. We take every good thing to extremes till it's no longer a good thing. It's what we humans do best. Unless you're treating a disease like brain cancer, this is how you should look at intermittent fasting.
