#67: Anthony Trucks - Former NFL Player On Living A Life Forged By Fire

Welcome back! So good of you to join us again. Well, there’s a big one today guys. Today on the show, we are joined by former NFL player for the Buccaneers, redskins and steelers, American Ninja Warrior, International keynote speaker, best-selling author and identity coach - Anthony Trucks. I said a while back that there was big things happening around here. Big changes, big name-guests, and I’m sorry I go on about this, but this show is our baby, and to think we’ve gone from voice recording on our phone in a carpark to interviewing NFL players, as well as building up this community of action takers. I couldn’t be any damn prouder. And, stay tuned for what’s to come. Anyway, I digress. The title of Anthony’s book is ‘a life forged by fire.’ ‘’Please tell my children who their father was’’ was the text message that Anthony had sent out at 28 to who his loved ones as he drove around searching for rat poison to take his own life. Throughout Anthony’s life, he has experienced what he defines as ‘’20 life shattering identity shifts’’ that have taken him from being given into a foster care home at 3, beaten and abused as a child, not finding his biological father until he was 21, discovering his wife had an affair, getting divorced, having his playing career in the NFL cut short, it’s safe to say that this man has endured trauma. One of the fascinating things about Anthony, is that he’s endured so much, but yet he always made it through the other side. My question then is ‘’why and how??’’ How does one make it through all of that and prosper, when just one of those pieces of trauma are enough to send others down the precipice. Well, we’re going to find out today. This was a real wide-ranging conversation, from relationships, to the benefit of coaches, to recovering from trauma, to how to like yourself more. It really was a great conversation. Links: AnthonyTrucks.com Sloworgo.co @anthonytrucks - IG / @freedompact - IG Join the conversation: Freedompact@gmail.com

#66: Dr. Anna Yusim - The Art Of Fulfilment

today on the show, we have got a wonderful, thought-provoking and highly-actionable conversation to bring to you to close the week. We are joined by Dr Anna Yusim. Anna is a private psychiatrist located on the upper-east side of Manhattan, and is also a lecturer at Yale Medical school. I could spend an entire podcast listing out all of the awards that Anna has won both as a student and in the field of psychology, but to name just a few Anna was awarded the Golden Award for the top thesis written in the humanities at Stamford, the Glasgow-Rubin award for women leaders at Yale medical school and also the National Institute of mental health outstanding research resident award. Anna is also now a published author, with the release of her brand new book ‘Fulfilled: The Science of spirituality’ which our conversation is largely predicated upon today. In today’s episode we delve into major concepts like fulfilment - what are the commonalities between the most fulfilled lives, how does one become fulfilled, how do we avoid fulfilment decoys, why fulfilment is more of an art than a science, then we look at things like spirituality and the incredible health benefits related to it. Overall, this is a fascinating conversation, and one I hope you guys enjoy. Marianne Williamson once said that she admired those like Dr Anna Yusim, as they are the ones who are leading the charge. Without any further ado, Dr Anna Yusim - Welcome to the freedom pact. Alex is the best-selling author of the fantastic book - Endure, which looks at expanding the human limits of the body and the mind. The timing of this podcast couldn’t be any better, as I’m sure many of you know that on October 12th Eliud Kipchoge ran the first ever 2-hour marathon. Which we delve into, as well as many other aspects related to self-talk, increasing your cognitive and physical stamina. I’ll give a quick sidetone, as many of you may be listening to these and thinking? Wait Joe, I’m not a runner I don’t care about running. What we discuss in this conversation isn’t specific to running. We discuss how to increase the human potential, and how to overcome the limiting beliefs and mental shackles that our mind plays on us. Today on the show, we are joined Lara Rebecca. Lara is a health and fitness enthusiast from my native Cardiff, in Wales, who is using social media as a platform to help change the lives of millions of people with eating disorders. For context into this episode, we’ve linked Lara’s story below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3uRjM4p2Kc&t=356s - which is a video she posted entitled ‘anorexic to athlete’, which now has around 8 million views, summarises Lara’s journey with an eating disorder, how it transpired into anorexia, how it almost claimed her life when Lara had a BMI of 13, to put this into context, Lara was around 16 years old and was weighing in around 5 stone. This conversation delves into the scary reality of living with an eating disorder. We cover topics like the forums involved that give people with eating disorders tips to lose even more weight, the mindset in which someone with an eating disorder would have, how Lara would trick her parents into believing that she was eating, what does it feel like to be 5 stone, a clue - Lara’s fingers turned blue. But remarkably, the reason why we wanted to connect with Lara is that what followed on from this battle is truly inspiring. Since then, Lara has helped millions of people online with her story being featured with major news networks like the BBC & ITV, is an avid health and fitness enthusiast and is also doing tremendous work into mental health awareness. Lara is one of the very few people that I’ve ever seen that is using social media for the right reasons. It is my pleasure to bring such an important conversation to you, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed learning about this subject and connecting with Lara. At the time of the recording, Frank was on tour of America playing live shows, when we contacted him to do to the interview, he was about 30 minutes away from a sound check, so about half way through the interview you will hear live music - we apologise, but hope that the content can make it up.
