Mother's Day Special - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #192

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode one hundred and ninety two of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! As we approach that glorious time of year where we celebrate mothers, those who live with us and those who have moved on, what an ideal time for Pip to have a sit down and chat with his own Mum about her Mum! It’s a veritable Mumapalooza in here (or Mumfest). You might recognise her warm, friendly tones and unmistakable laugh from her appearance on episode 51 of the podcast, where Pip was joined by her and his Dad too, but this time it’s ALL about Mum!You may be familiar with the song ‘Cowboi’ by Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - if not you’ll have a chance to get familar at the end of the podcast as it’s included in its entirety - which involves details of an attack, and as Pip notes on this podcast, is the only track he’s made which is based on a true, personal story. The story itself is based on an experience his Grandmother went through, which is relayed here by Pip’s Mum, and as it turns out, Pip’s Mum has an entire backlog of wild and crazy tales to tell about her (including the attack dealt with in ‘Cowboi’) - a mix of all the moods and emotions, and dealing with everything from the delightful to the plain surreal, all relayed with pride and detail and in most cases, that fantastic smile-inducing laugh which forms a great percentage of this episode. Fancy a sneak peak at the anecdote setlist? Expect to hear about cakes and canoe paddles, horseriding mishaps, yoga, “a little job”, the wedding, Stamford Beach, cowboys and playing dead and one that shan’t be spoiled but let’s just say the topic leaves Pip scratching his head… A wonderful and intimate story telling session which offers that ever so special element that podcasts can really deliver on - the feeling of unobtrusively sitting in on a conversation which involves you directly and offers some fantastic stories from real life that you may not otherwise hear in any other way. Priceless entertainment! And hopefully this might inspire you to crack open a conversation with available family members about your greater family sphere, to see what nuggets you will uncover… There are doubtless many to be enjoyed! Have fun, and take this chance to listen in on some ace memories and maybe have a little run through of your own memories too… We’ve all got some treasure to hold dear.––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• PIP'S MUM on INSTAGRAM!• PIP'S MUM on TWITTER!• 'COWBOI' by DAN LE SAC vs SCROOBIUS PIP!• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!! A powerful comedy special here as Pip is joined by the Sheriff of the South Shields - it’s Chris Ramsey!Indulge in the North East accent tones of Chris as he chats it up with Pip on all things comedic, including how he is expected to be funny by everyone from radio presenters to postal workers in day to day life, how the Geordie accent is NOT a gimmick, how the mind of the North East comic must make the trip down to London every so often or become stuck up there, his surprise first gig success and the ascent to working arenas not long after (and how important it is to make yourself small on stage at a huge venue), his breakthroughs on Russell Howard’s ‘Good News’ show and the wonders and miracles of being a parent. Rutger Bregman - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #190

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode one hundred and NINETY of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Ten away from two hundred… I’m sure you could have done the math on that yourselves. Still, that’s huge! And as we approach the big numbers, what better time to approach some big topics with none other than author and historian RUTGER BREGMAN!An absolutely massive episode covering - as said - some big topics and issues, which are immensely interesting and made a lot easier to understand with Rutger’s able guidance and explanation. His book ‘Utopia For Realists And How We Can Get There’ is available now (published by Bloomsbury), and this should be a good idea of what you can expect - Rutger tackles the issues of universal basic income, strikes, borders, how great art can be achieved by not having basic financial worries, how we need a return to utopian thinking, new ideas beginning at the fringes of society, how the US isn’t the beating heart of the entire world (as the news may have you believe), the ‘circle of bullshit’, and how we are working with “21st Century hardware on 19th Century software” - all of these are expounded on a great deal so this is a good one to really sit and take some time with. There is a kind of ‘Freakanomics’ approach to some of the points, which is fascinating - like the eventual financial cost of one element of one’s life, and the knock-on effects of doing one thing in particular and how it leads to what’s down the road. Just so much to enjoy, and all very positive too - certainly not a world of doom and gloom in this one, no way. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY EIGHT of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Another heavyweight acting classic right here for your immediate attention, as Pip is joined by the star of one of his favourite films (Lady Macbeth) and the upcoming Fighting With My Family - it’s Florence Pugh!A powerful conversation, full of energy and positivity and just pure satisfying goodness for your podcast enjoyment, as Pip and Florence get right down to it and cover everything from said favourite film Lady Macbeth (surely you’ve seen that by now and if not, amend that!), the subtle differences behind the scenes of indie and blockbuster films and merits of the former, the backlog of projects and the weirdness of doing promo several years after, her attitude towards nudity in film roles and how the media handles it versus how she handles it, her upcoming role as Paige in Fighting With My Family and the insane logistics of that, the dichotomy of murder on screen and nudity on screen and how it seems society in general is far more comfortable seeing violence, the female perspective as a director as opposed the male gaze, growing up in a loud family and her acting history and last but certainly not least, a pitch from she and Pip for a combined role in Peaky Blinders. Vicky McClure - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #187

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg's favourite episode of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip, episode 187 – a handful of words into the intro and already the rap gawds are being referenced... Whatever the number, this is a grand one right here as Pip is joined by one of the UK's finest, the Bafta winning queen Vicky McClure!Surely you will have seen Vicky's acting greatness on the big and small screen, having a HUGE part to play in the filmography of the legend Shane Meadows in films such as A Room For Romeo Brass, This Is England and the series of which the film spawned (as ‘Lol’), but if not you will most definitely be catching up after this chat with Pip, as she goes all the way into the archives, back to her days in the acting workshop where she honed her craft and improvisational skills (which would be vital in her later roles), Nottingham days, her very realistic and sobering view on her own acting profession which is very refreshing to hear, a TON of fascinating behind the scenes science on the Meadows method and the deep connection between director, cast, and overall end product, and her own collaboration with fashion label Finery. An all round podcast of pure perfection, so set aside some time and enjoy every moment. We Need To Talk About Wrestling - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #186

TRIGGER WARNING: This podcast discusses sexual assault, grooming and several other sensitive subject matters.Welcome, welcome, welcome to a very special roundtable discussion episode of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip.Pip is joined on this one by a powerful assembly of wrestling community associated women to have an informed, honest and educated talk about the current state of British Wrestling, which has recently been tainted severely by a number of serious allegations of sexual abuse.A very heavy situation to unpack and discuss, but this is an awesomely positive team to do just that, as Pip is joined by:• Journalist and writer Kirsty Bosley (aka Bozzers)• PW GrrrlGang’s Death By Suzy• Hardcore wrestling homie Vicky HaskinsThe four of them get right into it, and rather than getting into specifics of the cases being brought to attention right now, they offer advice and wisdom (from their own experiences and from discussions with the Police, Victim support & representatives of PROGRESS wrestling) to anyone and everyone affected by such issues and how to identify such situations, where to go for help and assistance, personal experience, the nuances of each case and the sensitivity each requires, social media’s role in the whole thing and how it can be right for some and not for others, and just a huge amount of positive greatness for you to absorb. Be you British Wrestling fan, or any kind of wrestling fan, this will obviously be one for your ears BUT more importantly - this is for EVERYONE. These situations are unfortunately universal and can affect anyone in any line of work, so it can be a very useful thing to hear - naturally no-one wants to have anyone they love or are friends with affected by anything like this but it’s very useful to at least have a little armoury should that situation arise. A kind of ‘break in case of emergency’ armoury. So listen close, and be informed - not everyone knows about this situation in British Wrestling but it’s hugely encouraging to hear how the community is not standing for it.Be warned - this episode, while not necessarily very explicit in language, might be hard for some to listen to. Just a word of caution. There are no specifics of cases discussed, but it’s not an easy topic to engage in. Guz Khan - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #185

WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is episode 185, we’re getting DEEP in the episodes now… A Brum phenomenon takes us through this one, a full on slammer of an episode featuring man like comedian and actor GUZ KHAN!Mad entertaining from start to end, as Pip sits down with Guz for a truly matey chat but which brings out the best of both! They were first acquainted back around a year ago on set on the upcoming ‘Walk Like A Panther’, where they behaved like naughty schoolkids on set by all accounts, and this is a catchup / roundup / ahead look at what Guz is involved with - a huge amount it turns out, and a wide range of topics get handled, such as Guz being new to the whole celebrity life and how surreal it can be (down to the weirdness of having a team), the importance of vibes on set and getting on with the crew, how he was essentially raised by three strong women and how that shaped his personality and humour, the art of storytelling, outrage vs laughing it off, teaching and how moments of discussion and clarity are so important to catch and build on, getting the tone right in filming in his hometown and creating a friendly space to do so, and just a whole ton more… Oh, and his new show ‘Man Like Mobeen’ on BBC3! Paloma Faith - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #184

WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! We trust your 2018 is getting off to a wondrous start and all coming together nice like. Thanks kindly for joining the DPP mothership for another year of relentless, non-stop goodness! And what way to continue that very same year of goodness other than by welcoming in UK #1 singing legend PALOMA FAITH!A long, long overdue guest on the podcast, as Pip has been pals with Paloma for a good decade or so (their friendship kicked off on the video for ‘The Beat That My Heart Skipped’), but it isn’t just mates reminiscing and going over the good old times… It’s a fascinating and honest chat about her humble beginnings and stage antics back in the day, being a number one album selling artist and how un-phased she is by the stardom of it all (which leads into some very open and awesome tangents on fame in general and the weirdness of it all and how it’s not for everyone), a good amount of political chat and how politics needs to evolve, and of course Paloma’s newborn baby child! As stated, it’s open and honest, and generally hugely inspiring and positive - you’ll feel Paloma’s sunny rays all over you long after the podcast is over… Lovely stuff for your mid-January Wednesday listening.––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• PALOMA FAITH on TWITTER!• PALOMA FAITH on INSTAGRAM!• PALOMA FAITH on THE INTERNET!• 'CRYBABY' by PALOMA FAITH!• WE.ARE.LIZARDS @ THE BOOK CLUB • JANUARY 27th!• SCROOBIUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!!
