Beans On Toast - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #202

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and two of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the one man standing on a chair troubadour favourite Beans On Toast, to get right into the ins and outs of how to refer to each other in terms of alter-egos and government names, to play solo or as a duo (and whether the Beans On Toast monicker applies to solo or band), the ascent from gigging locally to casually rocking arenas and now cruises, the appeal of festivals and a life of attending them, whether it’s a 9th or 10th anniversary of his first album, being the DMX of folk music (word to Pip on that one!), touring in a minimal fashion, attitudes towards newer music, not being married to your ideas, social media and a world of convo besides. Great stuff, and a very friendly chat which goes places a cold journalism interview wouldn’t. A ton for you here!––––– ––––– –––––THIS EPISODE'S LINKS:• BEANS ON TOAST on INSTAGRAM!• BEANS ON TOAST on TWITTER!• DRUNK FOLK STORIES• STANDING ON A CHAIR on VINYL• TOUR DATES!• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!! Cedric Bixler-Zavala - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #201

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and one of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! 201! Imagine… Thanks for tuning in, folks - it’s a proper great one this week, featuring a heavyweight guest who Pip has been trying to link with for a good long while. Well it looks like those dreams have been fulfilled, as this week’s guest is none other than CEDRIX BIXLER-ZAVALA of The Mars Volta, At The Drive In and MORE!Covering as much ground as possible in the hour they have before Cedric heads off to deal with the formalities of another live show, Pip and Cedric get deep into it from the very start - and there’s a ton to get through… To gloss over several of the talking points, you might get some insight into Cedric’s upbringing and being a Mexican American in Texas, the relentless and hypnotising tour schedule, the importance of being around like-minded and driven people and peers, growing up in a place with little or nothing going on and carving out your own opportunities, finding bandmates, drilling and finely crafting the sound of At The Drive In on the road through pure hard touring, his performance style (which has influenced Pip over the years) and how it was informed by breaking as well as Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys and the lead singer of The Make Up, shaking up language, song origins, rough support slots and tough crowds, dealing with losses through his life - mainly people and dealing with the pain and sadness, and all wrapped up with some very dark Scientology talk, about which it is hard to not get angry about on his behalf. Nevertheless - it is a wonderful, far reaching chat and any fans of The Mars Volta, At The Drive In, Antemasque and the hardcore scene in general will get a huge kick out of this. Pure gold from start to end, from one of the friendliest sounding and nicest dudes on the scene. Jess Thom (Tourettes Hero) - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #200

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 200 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Hardcore die-hard listeners (aka Team 3W) will have heard the word ‘welcome’ WELL over 600 times so far at the start of the podcast so add those three from just now to the pile… A huge, incredibly appreciative and gracious thank you to all of you for tuning in, and being a part of the 11 million plus listens to the podcast so far! Anyway, without inhaling our own exhausts too much here, let’s get going - this one’s an amazing one, and truly a chat for this milestone episode - please welcome Jess Thom, performer, comedian and founder of Tourettes Hero!Tourettes affects people in all kinds of different ways, but a key feature is the ‘tic’ - an involuntary sound made by the person, with the ‘motor tic’ being an involuntary movement. Jess has spent most of her life living with both, the condition developing in her teens to how it currently manifests itself. So as you will hear, Jess has her own unique tics - her main one is the word “biscuit”, but you’ll also hear “hedgehog”, “sausage” and a good few more. The sound accompanying them is her tapping her chest, just so you know what’s happening. What makes this a truly unique conversation is listening to Jess talk with Pip, who has a stutter. Not only that, we get to hear so much about Jess and her life, what moves her, how she got involved in the arts, and the world outside of her own condition. It’s a valuable insight into disability too, as she offers some wisdom regarding how she moves within society, seeing the world through different perspectives, and whether or not she would take a ‘magic pill’ to eliminate the condition. If that’s not enough, hear her enlightening talking points about relaxed theatre and what that is exactly, how she got involved and her own theatre performance in ‘Not I’ by Samuel Beckett (and how she got that off the ground in the first place), including a British Sign Language translation - tics and all! It’s also interesting to hear her say her thoughts are “tic-free” too - it can be easy to forget that part. Oh, and find out what a “buildup of biscuits” is too. You might be surprised. Enjoy this episode with Jess Thom!––––– ––––– –––––THIS EPISODE'S LINKS:• JESS THOM on TWITTER!• TOURETTES HERO on THE INTERNET!• NOT I by SAMUEL BECKETT• JESS on THE RUSSELL HOWARD SHOW!• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!! Charlotte Hatherley - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #199

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 199 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE! I mean not that it’s about numbers… But it kind of is… Anyway - the energy and steam does not dissipate or dissolve as we approach the 200th, as Pip is joined this week by the inspirational and full on musical powerhouse that is Charlotte Hatherley!A lovely episode to kind of sit in on, as Pip and Charlotte talk shop on a number of topics but of course, the main one is music. A LOT of music talk… Charlotte is a seasoned pro, having played since the age of 15, and her path has seen her play alongside/in bands with Ash, KT Tunstall, Bryan Ferry (in Kazakhstan no less), Birdy, Bat For Lashes, and that’s just a couple on her long list… Through those experiences she has learned much, gems of which she drops here for us all to absorb - the effects on one’s health on a tour, label budgets and the importance of them, being female in an industry which is often very male dominated, the days before social media, the ‘no special treatment’ aspect of being on tour versus the more sensible, restful approach to it, and then it all rounds out with some full on sci-fi geekery which she and Pip TRULY nerd out on. What are YOUR thoughts on the dude from Altered Carbon? It’ll come up… Also - her 'Space Rocks' show in conjunction with the Space Agency! Crazy - you'll hear MUCH more no that one... So all in all - a feast of entertainment and wisdom for your ears, so get going immediately!––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY on TWITTER!• CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY on THE INTERNET!• SPACE ROCKS!• 'A SIGN' video!• CHARLOTTE'S YOUTUBE CHANNEL!• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!! Alexis Okeowo - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #198

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 198 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! As always, the entire crew at the DPP Towers wishes you well and trusts that you are in good health. Here’s a powerful episode right here to get your Wednesday off to a fine start, as Pip is joined for a full chat with journalist Alexis Okeowo!Alexis is a journalist for the New Yorker, who has just released her immense book ‘A Moonless, Starless Sky - Ordinary Women And Men Fighting Extremism In Africa’, which details several encounters with the human side of extremism and radicalism in Africa. Approaching from a sober angle, not from an exaggerated ‘Breaking News’ stance that we are so used to in media, Alexis meets the people behind the stories and explores the humanity within, the religious complexities, the security obstacles, gender issues, just an insane amount for one person to deal with. But she has put herself deep in the situations and emerged with some incredible and touching stories which you would possibly never hear otherwise. She chats with Pip about many of these tales, exploring them further and revealing many of the points in her path which shaped and moulded her career. Candid, honest, and hugely interesting, so give this one your attention and discover much about a side of the world that is not always shown to us - Alexis is the woman to do it!––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• ALEXIS OKEOWO on TWITTER!• A MOONLESS, STARLESS SKY book!• ALEXIS at THE NEW YORKER!• ALEXIS OKEOWO blog!• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!! Allen Hughes & Jimmy Iovine - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #197

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 197 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! By now hopefully you’ve dried your eyes since last week’s powerfully emotional CryFest, the Hardcore Listing takeover with the Top Five Songs That Make You Cry, and are now ready to take on your next episode of Distraction Pieces - and indeed this is a grand one… A two parter of sorts, wrapped into one tight package, as Pip is joined by film director Allen Hughes and music producer and entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine consecutively!By now you may have seen the documentary packaged entitled ‘The Defiant Ones’ show up in your Netflix new arrivals - you peeped it yet? Well best believe you will be after listening to this… Directed by Allen Hughes (maybe you know him from Menace II Society but his filmography is VAST and amazing), it’s a four part (not four episode, as Hughes will tell you!) series documenting the beginnings of the Dre multiverse, Interscope Records, Beats, and all things legendary music producer Jimmy Iovine - we’ll get to him…! You know you’re in safe hands with Hughes, and it really is a glorious representation of a world that you will know parts of but certainly not the whole story… So with this episode of Distraction Pieces, you are treated to a half hour sit-down with the director himself, then swiftly followed by another half hour chat with the superstar behind the scenes Jimmy Iovine! Jimmy’s worked with a ridiculous list of people. Just ridiculous. I mean John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Dr Dre is a good start but when you start reading down the list, it is genuinely mind-blowing. So do that!! Add to that his record label action and the Beats By Dre element, and there you have a true business champ who was responsible for so much in not only rap music but rock and just an insane amount more… Ground gets covered, stories get told, philosophies and gems of knowledge get dropped - a pure treasure of goodness for your ears and your mind. TOO MUCH goodness. Check ‘The Defiant Ones’ on Netflix immediately if not soon!––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• ALLEN HUGHES on TWITTER!• JIMMY IOVINE on TWITTER!• 'THE DEFIANT ONES' series• ALLEN HUGHES FILMOGRAPHY• JIMMY IOVINE on DISCOGS• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!! Patrisse Cullors - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #195

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 195 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! All the best to you all, Team 3W and new-term listeners! Welcome x3 to all y’all. A very special episode right here, as Pip is joined by creator and full time spokesperson of the Black Lives Matter movement and, subsequently, one of the busiest women on the planet, Patrisse Cullors! It has been an incredibly busy time for Patrisse, as you will hear, so it’s lucky she’s found the methods to keep herself healthy and stable throughout her more hectic times in doing so much for the Black Lives Matter movement - working for a cause which is so much bigger than one’s self will surely takes its toll… In some ways it’s a shame that she is so busy - to quote her from this episode, “If things were better in this world, I wouldn’t have to work so hard…” It’s a heavy one for sure, as the wider world slowly becomes more aware of the struggles and prejudice faced by black people, brought into a shockingly present focus with the advent of cellphone cameras (and in an earlier recording from the Rodney King beating) and the documentation of police brutality on a grand scale. From her earlier days living in a now gentrified neighbourhood, where the money moves in and the history is kicked to the curb, to her education of the Black Panthers movement and the good they did which rivals the negative image from the media, to the prison system (the movie ‘13th’ is a SOLID viewing for more on this), to the difficulties in getting the movement up and running and of course, the perpetual ignorance of the ‘all lives matter’ statement and why it’s does no favours to anyone, the future of the movement and SO much more besides. Seriously, pure knowledge in this one and essential listening for those eager to learn more about the Black Lives Matter movement as well as those unaware as yet. Listen, learn, repeat if necessary.––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• PATRISSE CULLORS on TWITTER!• PATRISSE CULLORS on THE INTERNET!• BLACK LIVES MATTER website• 'WHEN THEY CALL YOU A TERRORIST - A BLACK LIVES MATTER MEMOIR' by PATRISSE CULLORS!• BONUS LINK! Steve McNeil - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #194

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 194 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Or as that deep wizard voiceover used to say in the Gauntlet arcade, “WELCOME BLUE WARRIOR”… What has that got to do with this week’s guest? Everything! For this week Pip is joined by one of the creators of Dave’s ‘Go 8 Bit’ and all round multi-talent Steve McNeil!A great chat with Pip and Steve as they get deep down into the art of the video game, and the specialness of the medium from the vintage to the brand new. As co-creator of the truly excellent ‘Go 8 Bit’, the computer game gameshow on Dave (amongst many more excellent televised and non-televisual goodies), Steve is very well versed in all things pixellated, and as Pip is partial to a good game or two himself, this is a great meeting of minds which gets into the origins of the programme (to quote Steve, “comedians playing video games drunk in a cupboard” - which is a less catchy title than Seinfeld’s ‘Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee I’m sure you’ll agree), the Edinburgh Fringe element of the whole show - the concept of which was a stroke of genius, how the early stages led to so much more, his other projects on the go (including the terrific 'WiFi Wars'), some bizarre and beautiful wi-fi inventions, the grand Dave channel, Twitch and the streaming arts, and just a lovely serving of video game-based goodies. We’ve come a long way since the days of ‘Pong’ but it’s funny how those formative years are still so resonant in the ongoing tale of the video game.
