Instagram superstars Stephanie Claire-Smith & Laura Henshaw explain how they use Instagram to grow multiple businesses |#414

Everytime I see someone with a huge following on Instagram (or any social media for that matter) I’m like … How did they get that many followers? And how are they making money from it? Well, wonder no more, Timbo! Because today’s guests, Stephanie Claire-Smith and Laura Henshaw, have a combined Instagram following of over 1.3 million people, which they’ve turned in to multiple revenue streams - everything from an eBook to a health food brand with 21 products to Bikinis! Keen to know how they’ve done it? I certainly am! “On social media, people want to see the real you. I think one of the reasons our business is so successful is that we post relatable material. We don’t just post glossy, polished stuff. The more relatable and real it is, the more accessible we become.” -Laura Henshaw, Keep It Cleaner There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview.  If you have questions about how to use Instagram to market your business, then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: Why Instagram and not Facebook? How do you get started on Instagram? How do you interact with your Followers? What makes a successful Instagram account? What’s the best way to increase your Instagram Followers? What posts work best on Instagram? And plenty more ... A big thank-you to my personal trainer Danny Kennedy for introducing me to Stephanie Claire-Smith and Laura Henshaw … two 24-year old Melbourne-based entrepreneurs who have built some significant businesses and revenue streams from their Instagram fame. Stephanie has 1.3M followers and Laura (a part-time Law student) has 160,000. Together, they’ve created the Kick Girls brand which includes a hugely successful online training program for young women. Along with the the Keep It Cleaner range of health food products available in supermarkets nationally. On top of that, Stephanie has launched a bikini brand called Midnight Co and a Sunglasses brand called Soda Shades, and is also an ambassador for Clinique and Bondi Sands. If you’ve ever wondered how to grow and monetise a social media following then you’re going to love this chat. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Keep It Cleaner’s Stephanie Claire-Smith & Laura Henshaw: Focus on engagement, not Followers. And it would seem the best way to do this is follow the theory of TELL don’t SELL. I loved how … when they realised their followers wanted more of them … they created and sold a simple eBook - despite the fact that included a photo of some slimy banana bread! I love how they are crystal clear on their brand and what it stands for. It was a pretty gutsy move for Stephanie to say “No’ to that Diet Tea brand given the amount of coin they were offering for a simple post … however, taking a long-term view there is no doubt that was the right decision. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Two more lucky listeners share what marketing is working for them, and in return I give them a prize or two Resources mentioned: KICGirls official website Stephanie Claire-Smith on Instagram Laura Henshaw on Instagram Keep It Cleaner on Instagram Keep It Cleaner official website Metro Food Co. official website Danny Kennedy personal trainer Please support American Express who make this show possible: American Express Business Explorer Credit Card ... it’s the credit card that ensures your business expenses reward you. How to turn a grudge purchase in to a purchase women love to make with Moxie’s Mia Klitsas | #413

Imagine selling a product that half the world needs. Once they start buying it, they can’t stop, but have to keep on buying it … for decades. It’s taxed unncessarily. You can’t outright advertise it. And the market is dominated by global brands. How’s that for a business and marketing challenge?! It’s a challenge that today’s guest, Mia Klitsas, of feminine hygiene brand Moxie has to take on every day. Join me as she explains exactly how she’s done it, and the wins and losses she’s had along the way. Plus I reward a couple more listeners who share their marketing insights in the Monster Prize Draw. “We’ve learned how to compete on brand – it’s the one thing that, if done right, can’t easily be replicated or taken away from you.” - Mia Klitsas, Moxie There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about how to build a strong brand in a crowded marketplace then you’ll get your answers in this interview, plus Mia and I discuss many other business and marketing related topics: Where’d the idea from Moxie come from? How’d you get it to market? Why the name Moxie? Does she lobby government over the Tampon Tax? How did she secure distribution in Australia’s largest supermarket and pharmacy chains? What has she noticed about the change in consumer buying habits over the years? What’s the most effective marketing Moxie does? Why did she launch a subscription model? Mia is a Melbourne based entrepreneur with a passion for social entrepreneurship and women's rights. Her Moxie brand of women's personal care products can be found at Woolworths, Coles, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse. And in an Australian first, Mia recently launched the cheekily named Moxie Box Club, a fully customisable online subscription service for women’s personal care products. What Mia has achieved is no mean feat given just how dominated the women’s personal care category is by huge global brands with extremely deep pockets. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Moxie’s Mia Klitsas: I love how Mia said she’s a big fan of failure. As she said, when confronted with it, you should ask yourself “WHat’s the worst thing that could happen?” I couldn’t agree more with hyer view that we should all work harder at injecting massive amounts of personality in to your marketing messages. If you want to see how this is done then check out the video at the bottom of Moxie.com.au - it’s hilarious. I’m impressed that Mia is so active responding to her tribe on social media. I think the big lesson here is that business owners should get more involved at the coal face with their customers. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Two more lucky listeners share what marketing is working for them, and in return I give them a prize or two Resources mentioned: Moxie’s official website That Moxie video (full of brand personality) Interview with VinoMofo’s Andre Eikmeier Monster Prize Draw winners: Leena van Raay from Bike N Blend Sam Hemphill from Meeum Please support American Express who make this show possible: American Express Business Explorer Credit Card ... it’s the credit card that ensures your business expenses reward you. Sports Illustrated was the inspiration for this clever email marketing strategy that lead to a 7-figure business sale | #412

Dan Faggella attributes a large part of the seven-figure sales price he recently achieved for his business to a clever email marketing strategy he learnt by studying how Sports Illustrated go about it. In today’s episode, Dan walks us through exactly how he used email marketing to nurture a huge list and a successful business. Plus we catch up with Tom O’Toole, Australia’s craziest baker, give away more prizes to some clever listeners and announce some big news direct from the Australian Podcast Awards. “I wanted to grow my business as fast as I could. I wanted to get it to the point that someone would want to pay a lot for it. I knew email marketing was my weapon of choice, so I looked around to see who was doing it extremely well. Who was making a billion dollars from it in annual revenue. And Sports Illustrated was first to mind!” -Dan Faggella, Tech Emergence There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview.  If you have questions about how to do email marketing successfully, then you’ll get the answers in this interview, including: The rules for writing an autoresponder email series The 3 key ingredients of any automated email campaign How to borrow winning email marketing from the biggest player in your industry How to write a weekly newsletter that gets you sales And how to get into the habit of writing weekly emails even if you’re not a writer Dan first appeared way back in episode 160, when he was a martial arts champion who’d sold his gym to focus on building an online training business for up and coming martial artists. Well, he built that business to the point where it was generating $2M annually, then recently sold it for seven figures, attributing a large part of that successful sale to his email marketing strategies. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Tech Emergence’s Dan Faggella: I love how Dan looked to Sports Illustrated for inspiration. Given they were already nailing their email marketing, why try and reinvent the wheel. So, for your current marketing challenge, choose a big brand that’s doing it well and copy them! I also love Dan’s approach to the first email you send in your autoresponder series - keep your headline fairly ‘vanilla’ to avoid scaring people off (after all, they're just getting to know you), make it educational, provide solid social proof of any claims and a strong call to action, and a compelling reason to open the next email. And I love how Dan reached out to me for a second interview in order to share his learnings. He had nothing to sell. He just wanted to pay it forward and make a difference. So much so that he’s even created a fantastic blog post detailing exactly how he used the Sports Illustrated email marketing model. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Big news re the Australian Podcast Awards Two more lucky listeners share what marketing is working for them, and in return I give them a prize or two More prizes have been added for you to win in the Monster Prize Draw Australia’s craziest baker, and past guest, Tom O’Toole updates us on his 20 km/h trip across Australia in a Model A Ford as he raises money fo0r cancer research Resources mentioned: My first interview with Dan on episode 160 Science of Skill’s official website Tech Emergence - Dan’s new business Forbes article Dan mentioned - Learn How One Millennial Sold A Tiny, Niche Business For $1 Million-Plus Timothy Reiss article Dan mentioned - How a young entrepreneur broke $1M in revenue in eight months Dan’s blog on how he used the Sports Illustrated email marketing model Donate to cancer research thanks to Tom O’Toole Please support these businesses who make this show possible: American Express Business Explorer Credit Card ... it’s the credit card that ensures your business expenses reward you. A new way to use video to market your small business with Video Hero’s Jules Watkins | #411

Ex-MTV director Jules Watkins loves the fact that small business owners can create the most amazing marketing and sales videos by simply using their iPhone. He’s been talking about this ever since the first iPhone came out. In today’s episode, Jules reveals why Vlog style videos are working so well and how your business can benefit from them. Plus Melbourne SEO Service’s Dave Jenyns gets his back up with business owners who aren’t updating their CMS and plug-in (how geeky!) and I announce two more winners in our Monster Prize Draw. “There’s a ton of video being produced, so the question is what’s going to be catchy and what’s going to be different. People are expecting to see say a video of an accountant in a suit, but instead wouldn’t it be interesting to see them on a surfboard?! This is what we call a pattern-interrupt.” -Jules Watkins, Get Video Hero There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about how to use video to market your small business, then you’ll get the answers in this interview, including: Why every small business should be using video marketing? Why the self-limiting beliefs around creating video aren’t true? What are the most effective types of video a small business can create? What is vlog-style video? Why does vlog-style video work so well? What are some of the gadgets I can use to make my marketing videos even better? And much, much more ... Jules Watkins is the founder of Video Hero, where you’ll find some amazing training for business owners who want to create more videos. Jules is also an ex-TV Director who made hit shows in the UK for the BBC and MTV. His credits include 'The Biggest Loser' and 'Pimp My Ride'.  These days, he continues to produce videos, but mainly using his smartphone, even though he owns two pretty schmick DSLR cameras! And he loves nothing more than showing small business owners (just like you) how to break through all the limiting beliefs you may have that are stopping you from benefiting from the power of video marketing. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Jules Watkins of Get Video Hero: Vlog style videos. Be authentic, transparent and real in the videos you create. Own a strong call-to-action. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Melbourne SEO Services Dave Jenyns has a bone to pick with website owners who aren’t updating their precious website. Rapid growth attributed to an unwavering respect for and understanding of the customer with Prospa’s Beau Bertoli | #410

When Beau Bertoli decided to build a business putting loans into the hands of small business owners, he and his co-founder, Greg Moshal, both had firsthand knowledge of their potential customers' pain points. So they decided to knock on the doors of small business owners in Sydney’s key shopping strips and ask them if what they were thinking was on the money. Their idea was quickly validated and Prospa was born. This is the story of how they then built Prospa in to the fastest growing business in the Asia Pacific region in just a few short years. “It’s easy to send money out in our business; we just need to make sure we would get it back! We were able to put up a really good base of initial customers, lend out a few million dollars … and as we were getting repayment history from them, we kept on asking what did you like? What didn't you like? What do you wish we were providing that you weren’t? And that (right there) informed a whole lot of ways to improve our business. ” -Beau Bertoli, Prospa There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about rapid growth, then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: How consumer research very quickly validated their idea? How they got Prospa to market? How they’ve built Prospa in to Asia Pacific’s fastest growing business in just a few years (according to the Financial Times). Where the name Prospa came from? Plus plenty more. When Prospa’s co-founder Beau Bertoli decided to make it easy for small business owners to get funding, he and his business partner both had firsthand knowledge of their potential customers' pain points. Beau had run a retail business selling motor scooters, worked in property development and developed a business selling telematics systems for fleet managers, before spending seven years working with a listed financial services company. And Greg, had been a serial entrepreneur for years. So sit back (with a notepad and pen) as Beau explains how consumer research very quickly validated their idea, how they got Prospa to market, how they’ve built Prospa in to Asia Pacific’s fastest growing business in just a few years (according to the Financial Times) … plus plenty more. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Prospa’s Beau Bertoli: Ask yourself if you’re truly solving (in the easiest way possible) the major problem your customers are facing. Make time for face-to-face conversations with your customers. Put aside four days a year aside to go offsite and work on your business. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Some marketing ideas from two listeners who’ve gone ahead and implemented some thinking they’ve picked up on their favourite marketing podcast ;0) Resources mentioned: Prospa’s official website The Financial Times article listing Prospa as the #1 fastest growing business in the Asia Pacific region Interview with the eMyth’s Michael Gerber Trustpilot website Please support these businesses who make this show possible: DesignCrowd is the world’s #1 custom design marketplace where, with access to 550,000 designers, you’ll get the perfect design every time. The secret to working smarter not harder with Your Empire’s Chris Gray | #409

Chris Gray owns Your Empire, a property buyer’s agent for the well-healed. After spending the early part of his career working for a global accounting form, he finally made the break to run his own business at the age of 31, when he retired from working for the man, and started to invest in real estate. Before long he started reaping the rewards of those smart money decisions and has never looked back. He’s built a $15M property portfolio of his own, works only a few hours a day, travels the world (for free) often and has pretty much worked out how to work smart, not hard. Plus in episode 409 of your favourite marketing podcast, you’ll discover why too much content is not a great idea, more listeners win big in the Monster Prize Draw, and we check in with Tom O’Toole (Australia’s favourite baker) who’s embarking on one crazy road trip! “If you go out for coffee with someone for an hour, you build a certain relationship. You go and spend four hours playing golf with them, you build an even better relationship and you breakdown a lot of barriers. You go drinking for 10 to 12 hours on my boat and you break down a lot of barriers!” -Chris Gray, Your Empire There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about working smarter and not harder, then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: Where did the idea for Your Empire come from? How to network effectively? How to make staff love working for you? How to fly free in the pointy end of the plane? Why and how to make marketing fun? And plenty more ... A little bit more about today’s guest Chris Gray started investing in property at the age of 22. He retired from full time work as an accountant at Deloitte at 31. Now 46, Chris has  $15m+ of property in his personal portfolio; and runs Your Empire, a buyers agency that builds property portfolios for time-poor professionals, just like he did for himself. Your Empire buys 1-2 properties a week, and spends up to $5m a year on renovations for its clients. Chris also hosts the Smart Investing show on Sky News. He travel overseas 10-15 times a year, and is into car racing, motor yachts and flying choppers. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Your Empire’s Chris Gray: I love Chris’s approach to networking where in a room of 100 prospects he’d prefer two deep conversations than 98 shallow ones. Chris is the master seeder … constantly inserting (quite subtley) points about his business into the conversation. I think we all need to get out and smell the roses more often. Get an Amex card! Motor racing legend Steve Richards nearly bought a fast food franchise before honouring his true business calling | #408

Steve Richards is Australian motor racing royalty with four Bathurst titles under his belt. He’s also a small business owner who came perilously close to becoming a fast food franchisee, before he and his wife realised that there was much stronger business calling for them both. So join me as Steve shares his journey from being an employee for other people’s racing teams, to starting his own small business in Steve Richards Motorsports. Plus in episode 408 of your favourite marketing podcast, I reveal a simple hack for helping Google love your website, and two more lucky winners are announced in the Monster Prize Draw. Steve Richards shares loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Here’s just some of what I asked him: Your Dad won Bathurst seven times. What was the biggest lesson you learnt from him that’s helped in business? In 2010, you came within hours of buying a KFC franchise.  What was the appeal? And why did you pull out? How do you turn your skill for driving ridiculously fast in to a business? What differentiates you from other drivers who have tried to do that? How has being a celebrity helped you in business? What skills have you carried across from top-level racing in to running a business? What’s the worst accident you’ve ever had? How did you regain your confidence? You’ve worked for a lot of big brands - Ford, Holden, Laser Plumbing & Electrical - what have you learnt from them? What’s the secret to endurance racing? How do you market Steve Richards Motorsports? Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview.  A little bit about today’s guest Steve Richards is a racing car legend turned small business owner. Now I don’t use the word legend lightly, but this guy is - he’s won the Bathurst 1000 four times, and his Dad Jim Richards won it a whopping seven times! All up, Steve has had 57 podium finishes. Basically, if you’re an Aussie and not even in to motor racing, Steve’s face will be familiar to you. I first met Steve way back on episode 318 when I was invited to a corporate race day by long time listener and owner of Laser Plumbing & Electrical, Steve Kiel … during that episode I explored whether race car sponsorship was worthwhile … and a part of that exploration was a hot lap in Steve’s racing Porsche! Steve’s business story is fascinating how he went from being an employee of other people’s race teams to now having his own in Steve Richards Motorsport, in which he found himself being a Jack of all trades - truck driver, manager, marketer and even race car driver! One aspect I found particularly interesting was the fact that he and his wife Angela were just minutes away from signing a contract to become a KFC franchisee before realising their true business calling. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Steve Richards of Steve Richards Racing: Find time for ideas - read more books, listen to more podcasts, attend workshops and events - well done to the nine iof you who’ve joined my Deep Dive Mastermind. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to be more efficient. A few months back, I did a complete audit of how I put an episode of this show together, and I saved myself at least 90-minutes each week. Plus I’ve captured all the steps in SystemHub.com Be a Connector. This may or may not be in your nature, but give it a go anyway. It feels so good to connect two people who you know can benefit from knowing each other. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in episode 408 you’ll also discover: Melbourne SEO Services Dave Jenyns reveals a little known hack that will ensure Google loves your website And I give away more prizes in the SBBM Monster Prize Draw, to two inspiring listeners who share something they’ve actioned from listening to this show and how it’s impacted their business Oh, and I announce a new prize worth $2,500! How to overcome adversity in business with double cancer survivor and instant noodle maker Damien Lee of Mr. Lee’s Noodles | #407

Want to know how to deal with adversity in business? London-based entrepreneur Damien Lee was given just weeks to live when he was diagnosed with cancer. He quickly decided that a diet of no nasties, raw food and chemo, as well as a determined mindset and spirit was the only way to get well. But all the time he craved one guilty pleasure - instant noodles! But because they are full of junk, he couldn’t have them. So, in the face of a double adversity - cancer and no instant noodles - he vowed to revolutionise the market with a more healthy noodle. So he created Mr. Lee’s Noodles, free from nasties and full of goodness. But the story doesn’t end there, Damien has recently fought off a second cancer diagnosis and is back in the game. “That one meeting set the tone for our whole Mr. Lee’s Noodle business. In 2014, Damien was diagnosed with late stage 4 Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) and only given weeks to live. He is still alive! He then wanted to cleanse his life from eating crap but is a lover of instant noodles. So, he created Mr Lee’s Noodles. The marketing of this business has been extraordinary. Mr Lees are winning all sorts of awards and I thought of your show immediately as I think he would make a great podcast. After having battled with NHL, he was diagnosed late last year with Throat Cancer. This was another primary cancer and it is extremely rare for anyone to make it through 2 primaries in the lifetime. I am looking after their Australasian operations as we are now making these noodles in Melbourne!! So, please have a look at the videos and website and if you are interested, let’s make a time to get together. Thanks Timbo. I met Sharon a few weeks ago when we were both guests on one of those panel discussions you hear on talk back radio. You know those ones where you talk crap for an hour - Are you a cat or dog person? Would you do online dating? That kind of thing! Anyway, we quickly hit off, and the more Sharon told me her story, the more interested I became. The mother of two teenagers, Sharon’s been a school teacher for the past 20+ years, and has a particular bent for helping teenagers and their parents navigate those mirky years. She’s written 12 books on the subject, with her best-selling Teen Talk Series selling over 100,000 copies. Her prolific writing and blogging has lead to a public speaking career, and Sharon is also the go-to person when the Media need an opinion on a teenage topic. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Sharon Witt: What do you need to do to be regarded as an expert in your industry? What’s your hook? Eg. Awards won? Maybe you’re #1 at something? What’s holding you back? What’s stopping you from feeling the fear and doing it anyway? But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Dave Jenyns and I explain the power of a quality backlink in driving traffic to your website I giveaway more prizes in the new Monster Prize Draw Resources mentioned: Sharon Witt’s website Melbourne SEO Services Interview with Andrew Griffiths on how and why to write a book Please support exclusive sponsor Amex who make this show possible: American Express Business Explorer Credit Card ... it’s the credit card that ensures your business expenses reward you. Matthew Parry is a part-owner of ABC Sales & Marketing, a 30-year old Aussie business that imports, distributes and manufactures products for sale in Australian supermarkets. Mathew caught my attention with an email explaining that he was in the early throes of taking on Pringles around the world with a brand he’s manufacturing called The Good Crisp Company. It’s basically a chip that looks like a Pringle, comes in a Pringle-like tube, but contains no nasties! And how’s this for success … Just one year in and they’ve replaced Pringles on all Virgin Australia and Tiger flights nationally. Plus, its stocked in 2,000 supermarkets across the America, and is in the top 10 fastest growing brands in Whole Foods stores. In fact, The Good Crisp Company is on track to do $5 million in sales in its first full year! In Matt’s own words he says “We have a tiger by the tail, and are trying desperately to hold on for the ride!” Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Matthew Parry of The Good Crisp Company: I love how Matt visits trades shows looking for trends … but most importantly, questioning what he didn’t see and turning that in to a product. I love Matt’s mindset around taking on the big guys - I think he said something like “Be everything they’re not!” Fast to market, responsive to customer feedback, open to new ways of doing things. I loved Matt’s questioning of “How many conventional products are yet to be created in their natural form?” But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Dave Jenyns explains how to claim your free Google My Business page I’ve locked in the details for the SBBM Deep Dive Mastermind And there’s plenty of prizes to be given away in my Monster Prize Draw Resources mentioned: The Good Crisp Company Melbourne SEO Services How to claim your Google My Business page Prize winners websites: Automately - Ryan Speak Noobspearo - Isaac Daly Shrek Please support these businesses who make this show possible: American Express Business Explorer Credit Card ... it’s the credit card that ensures your business expenses reward you.
