Preface for, "The Life of Missionary Henry Martyn". From the 1831 edition that was written by John Hall. This volume has been primarily compiled from the tenth English edition of the Memoirs of Mr. Martyn by Rev. John Sargent. The author of this publication has aimed to present the subject in a way that helps young readers form a balanced view of Christian character. Instead of encouraging vague admiration, the goal is to offer the humble missionary as a practical example to follow. To achieve this, the author has intentionally avoided excessive praise, hoping the biography will leave a lasting impression on the reader about the essential need for God's power in leading a holy and useful life. Often, children are subtly taught to see the remarkable examples of piety and zeal recorded in both sacred and ordinary history as exceptions to Christ's teaching, where He instructed His disciples to say—even after fulfilling all commands—"We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were supposed to do." This approach can create an illusion that even mature understanding may not fully dispel, and it may also diminish the glory of the one perfect example of righteousness that has blessed our world. Moreover, it risks nurturing hidden religious pride in the heart of the young Christian, something that usually needs no extra encouragement to hinder the growth of grace. Memoirs of a Christian should be designed more to instruct the living than to praise the dead, and it is surprising that so few works of this nature are available, crafted with evangelical discernment. Revised in 2024 to enhance readability and comprehension. The following story, originally read in French, immediately struck me as one that, with some modifications to convey clear and strong evangelical truths, would make an excellent addition to Sunday School libraries and appeal to young readers of all kinds. The story is deeply moving, and the lessons it teaches are both valuable and important. I've rarely encountered lessons of practical piety presented as simply as they are in this little book, all drawn from the beauties of nature. Almost every chapter contains sermons directed at young hearts, using flowers from the garden as their texts. This volume tells the true history of a samurai who abandoned the false gods of his upbringing to embrace Christianity and bring moral reformation to his homeland—through the only way possible—the Gospel. Paul Kanamori's Life Story: How the Higher Criticism Wrecked a Japanese Christian; and How He Came Back. As a young believer, Kanamori experienced a powerful revival and went on to serve as a missionary to his own people. However, over time, he fell away and became a prodigal. In the book, Kanamori shares how he was led astray by the higher criticism movement—a school of thought that caused him not only to question God’s Word but to doubt its authority, deny its truth. As I read about his spiritual drift, I was reminded of people I know today. Some now question foundational biblical truths, claiming that Adam and Eve were not real people, or they’ve embraced theistic evolution. Is there hope for them? Kanamori describes his journey through doubt and denial of Scripture, but his story does not conclude in despair. Even after 20 years of grappling with skepticism and theological error, he was brought back to a firm faith and full restoration. This provides me with great encouragement to continue praying for those who have strayed from God's Word—there is always hope for their restoration as well.
