Episode 44 – Canary In A Coal Mine
Legend has it that miners took canaries into coal mines to act as a warning sign of dangerous gasses. Are you hiding from your scale? Refusing to wear your fitness tracker? Saying things like, “I’ll start next week”? These are all weight loss “canaries in coal mines” that you are approaching danger. In this episode, Catherine and Donald talk about recognizing the signs of danger and trying to do the opposite of what your instincts tell you to do. Don’t hide. Share with others. Like when your car spins out on black ice, you turn into the spin even when your instincts tell you to turn away. The Tip of the Week (TOW!) is to stop following people and pages on Social Media that are hurting your weight loss goals. The Product of the Week (POW!) is the excellent book, “The Gifts of Imperfection” by Brene Brown. Also, the couple attempt to answer the age-old question, “Why is gravy so good?”.

Episode 42 – The Wizard of oz
Just in time for Halloween, we have a scary good episode in which we take you through the ins and out of weighing and measuring your food. Catherine and Donald talk about how tracking what you eat gives you a budget and benchmarks for your weight loss adventure. Choosing not to track is like paying with a credit card and that bill is coming due with interest. The Tip of the Week is to reduce your goal to increase your goal (we promise it will make sense) and the product of the week is demitasse spoons. Plus, hear Catherine accuse our daughter of stealing steps from her.

Episode 41 – Winter is Coming
In the world’s first known “Game of Thrones”/Aesop’s Fables mashup, Catherine and Donald remind you that winter is coming. Sometimes winter is a season between fall and spring, and other times, winter is a metaphor for life’s unexpected challenges. The couple discuss how to be ready for this weight-loss winter and the benefits of doing it now. The Tip of the week involves Halloween candy and the Products of the Week are single servings of some of our favorite things. Also, get inspired to Google a Goblin Shark, hear Catherine’s Jimmy Carter impression, find out if the Mother of Dragons would have great BBQ, and learn that the White Walkers are really powdered doughnuts. Listen to the inspirational super-stars that TV Guide calls “The Jon Snow and Cersei Lannister of weight-loss podcasting”.

Episode 40 – Ten Percent Pretty
Someone, somewhere, probably said, “Never trust a pretty face; especially not your own”. In this episode, Catherine and Donald discuss being an unreliable narrator in our own weight loss stories. The couple give advice on not ignoring the evidence in front of you and becoming the champion of your own life. They also talk about a brick made of McRibs for some reason. This week’s tip of the week is to look for foods that are 1 calorie per gram and the Product of the week is the Road ID. They also try to answer the age-old question, “Does Catherine have pierogi shaped blood cells?”

Episode 39 – Friday to the Danger Zone
A dictionary that I just made up defines “Weekend” as two days that end the week. Sometimes it seems like these two days, three if we include Friday, can sabotage our weight loss goals. However, the real saboteur is ourselves. Truth Bomb. Catherine and Donald discuss what to do when you’re doing everything you can on week days, but falling apart on the weekends. It turns out that you are not a victim, but rather an adult who is capable of making good choices. Who knew? The Tip of the Week involves planning ahead for meals, and the Product of the Week is the Food Scale. Also in this episode, they also introduce you to The Bus of Perfectness, Check Mix Fits, and Donald and Catherine get a Smug Check. Fun Fact: this episode was almost called “Weakend Worrier”, so now you have two titles for the price of one!

Episode 38 – Let Cheez-Its Take The Wheel
Sometimes on We Only LOOK Thin you lean valuable lessons. This week you learn that not all “t”s are silent and that Catherine is a yuk mouth who thinks apples are “meh”. Catherine and Donald also tackle emotional eating; the act of turning to food for comfort when we get upset or stressed out. The two of them discuss how they ate to soothe themselves for most of their lives and how learning to sit with discomfort and own your feelings is a huge step in the weight loss adventure. In addition, Listerine and fresh breath are both the Product of the Week (POW!) and Tip Of the Week (TOW!). You also learn that Donald is a knight named “Sir Cheese Wygal” and yet another valuable lesson; you don’t want to wear a chum bathing suit to a shark convention.

Episode 37 – The Motivation Bus
Have you ever said, “I can’t lose weight because I’m just not motivated?”. Catherine and Donald sure have, but in this episode, they reveal that motivation is a fallacy in weight loss and even when it does come along, it’s fleeting and unreliable. If you wait for The Motivation Bus to pick you up, you’ll end up stuck at the bus stop. Instead of motivation, slowly build up momentum. Momentum is better than motivation. It’s like feeding yourself a pill wrapped in baloney, but it leads to weight and health goals. Also, this week’s tip of the week is to take progress photos and this week’s Product Of the Week (POW!) is the rebounder. Lastly, find out why Donald wore tissue boxes on his feet.

Episode 36 – Planned Obsolescence
When you fail to plan your obsolescence you plan to be obsolete. Okay, that makes no sense, but I promise that this podcast will make everything clear. In an episode with two new segments, Catherine and Donald talk about the planned obsolescence that’s built into many diet programs and home exercise equipment. They caution about getting too excited over a new gadget or gizmo or a “get thin quick” diet instead of building sustainable habits. They also introduce the Tip of the Week and this week’s tip is to watch out for buzzwords. Then they argue about whether it’s “ants on a log” or “sadness on a log”. Which team are you on? They also launch the Product Of the Week! POW! The “t” is silent. Lastly, they ask the age-old question, did the dinosaurs track their calories? Listen for the phrase that pays! Note, there is no phrase that pays.

Episode 35 – You Can’t Fight Math
Math; none of us understand it. Certainly, none of us like it. But it turns out that it’s futile to fight against it. In this episode, Catherine and Donald talk about the weight loss equation; putting effort in equals results out. They discuss really examining your habits and being truly honest with yourself when “you’re trying everything” and still can’t lose the weight. Donald also talks about giving himself the nickname “Tank” and the couple take you on a vision quest. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a fun Pringles story and zombies!
