Honey, I Got Fired

Nathaniel Hawthorne went home to tell his wife that he had just been fired from his job. “Good,” she said. “Now you can write your book.” Hawthorne used the time to write “The Scarlet Letter,” one of the great masterpieces of American literature. Why is it that some people dream and their lives never change while others dream and walk into new successes every day? 3. What should I be doing while I’m unemployed? 4. What’s wrong with me – why can’t I just be satisfied?

A listener asks: "Why can't I just be satisfied with what I have?" Some of us aren't cut out to do the same thing year after year. Embrace your desire for change, challenge and variety. Don’t try to find the one thing you’re going to do for the next 30 years. Yes, be clear about what you want your life to look like 10 years - 20 years from now. But just have a clear plan for the next 2-3 years in your work - that's likely to change. Questions: What’s wrong with me! Why can’t I just be satisfied with what I have? It began in elementary school, I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up…now I’m 50 and I still don’t. I have an IT certification but its been 5 months and I have only clinched one interview that didn't lead to an offer. I want a new family – is that possible?

You can have amazing success in creating your own "family" relationships with people where you don’t share blood - but you share hearts and minds. If you’re all alone - yes need to work on that family area. But don’t feel that you have to limit great relationships to those with whom you do not share the same goals and dreams. Questions: 1. Is taking a sales position good preparation for eventually being an entrepreneur? 2. Is it ok to let go of some of my past friends? 3. What are your suggestions to find the right city, state & work for the life we want to have? 4. How can I be successful in “family” if I have no family relationships? No Passion – there’s a hole in your bucket

A frustrated listener wants to know how to find his passion. I encourage him to pursue the things that touch his heart and to recognize that passion is more “developed” than “discovered.” But without passion you won't engage the talents of people around you and ultimately, you'll burn out. Questions: 1. I can’t find my passion and it frustrates me to keep hearing about it 2. How can I be intentional about cultivating an Abundance Mindset? 3. My wife thinks I have to have everything together in my life before I could be a coach. 4. Should I create a product for a big or small audience? Glory to Self vs Glory to God……

I think we often create an artificial dichotomy in which we divide what is "spiritual" and what is “secular.” We don’t leave work to go do ministry. Our work is the best opportunity we have for living out our calling and for engaging in true ministry. What we're doing on Thursday tells much more about how we can serve others well than seeing how we spend a few minutes on Sunday morning. A 20-yr-old listener's question frames this episode. Questions: 1. Should I do what I want or what God wants me to do? 2. How can I build a name for myself without being egotistical? 3. I love selling real estate but feel like I should be doing more Godly work. 4. If God has a calling and purpose for me does that mean I have to be a pastor or missionary? 5. I feel guilty because the work I’m most passionate about is not Godly. I’m broke and broken - how can I move forward?

When we're feeling down it's easy to overlook our greatest assets. This gentleman has a long history of sales - until his wife's health issues caused a time gap. Now he's 63 with no income and is desperate to break the cycle. The bad news is, he's currently out of work. The good news is, there is no skill more powerful for quickly generating income than selling. Questions: 1. If the company website says No Calls - what should I do? 2. Are you familiar with Gretchen Rubin’s 4 Tendencies? 3. Do think I could do a compilation of stories about the Amish? 4. I’m broke and broken - How does one find work that best aligns with their God-given skills with a short timetable? 5. How can we get more sales of our dog collars from our online store?
