195 - CUE the COMEBACK: Next Steps for Educators
If you found yourself in survival mode this year, I see you.
Be kind to yourself. Accept what this year was. Take time to reflect. Release. Recover. Recharge and get well. Then revisit and reinvest.
Then come the fall, you and I will once again leave the comfort zone. We’ll stretch ourselves. We’ll take risks. We’ll embrace the unfamiliar, and we’ll do it all for our students, because that is who we are and that is what we do.
I’ll see you in September.
Welcome to SPARKS: mini-segments intended to spark your thinking and ignite your practice. These short episodes are based on my written reflections, which you can find on the Teachers on Fire Magazine at Medium.com.

193 - PASSION PROJECTS Remind Us What School Can Look Like
I do not enjoy learning how to assemble IKEA furniture. Or fix cars. Or cook. Or complete home renovations. These are tasks that I will do to the extent that I have to, but they don’t interest or inspire me. And although I want to remain curious about all of the world around me … perhaps they never will.
What I’ve just described resembles the experience of school for many students. Some areas of learning motivate and inspire. Other kinds of learning feel like obligations at best, drudgery at their worst. Something to survive.

192 - How I'm Making Student Learning VISIBLE in My Math Classroom
One of the things I’ve found about teaching Math is that it helps to have a regular, real-time sense of student learning. For ALL of my students.
As we take on new skills (or scaffold off older ones), what is their current proficiency level? Do they really understand a concept, or are they just keeping their head down and bluffing, hoping to evade detection? Who are we leaving behind?
Welcome to SPARKS: mini-segments intended to spark your thinking and ignite your practice. These short episodes are based on my written reflections, which you can find on the Teachers on Fire Magazine at Medium.com.

188 - TEACHER WELLNESS and SELF-CARE: How to Avoid Burnout and Rekindle Our FIRE
Is educator self-care even possible during a PANDEMIC?
Can we actually do better than aim for SURVIVAL?
How can we move from burnout to rekindled FIRE?
Catch my conversation with Lindsay Titus, Dan Tricarico, and Dori Katsionis as we dig into all this and more.
Welcome to Roundtables: livestreamed conversations meant to warm your heart, spark your thinking, and ignite your professional practice.
What are some practical self-care strategies that you can share for that teacher who has zero margin and feels close to burnout?
DAN TRICARICO recommends the 5 Ss: Stillness, Silence, Space, Subtraction, and Slowing Down. These are always free and always available!
LINDSAY TITUS talks about the mindset of self-care: it's about defining what it looks like for YOU, your needs, and your identity. Lindsay points to the 4 As: Awareness (of self, environment), Acceptance (of where I'm at), Acknowledgment, and Action (move toward alignment).
DORI KATSIONIS points toward the 3 Ms: Movement, Mindset, and Meditation. Getting outside is huge.
Every YES requires a NO. What are some things that pandemic educators can be saying no to right now?
Who are the VOICES and INFLUENCES that inspire you in the areas of teacher wellness and self-care?
What are the PROJECTS you are passionate about right now? How can we CONNECT with you?
