49. Facts Don’t Care About Your Phalanx: The Roman-Macedonian Wars

On this week’s episode, Cam and Evan discuss the Roman-Macedonian Wars that coincided with Rome’s rise to imperial status in its conquest of the Mediterranean. At the start of the conflict, Rome was still just one of the major powers in the Mediterranean. Once the dust would settle from their Punic and Macedonian Wars, however, the Roman Republic would become the dominant force in the area on the backs of a new type of infantry: the Roman Legions. While Alexander the Great and his diadochi had conquered the eastern Mediterranean using their improved phalanx formation, Rome would introduce the world to their manipular legions with resounding success. 48. Roman Slavery and the Servile Wars

This week, Left Unread makes a departure from glorification of old white men to discuss one of the oldest and most foul of human institutions: slavery. The enslavement of fellow human beings by the Romans is well attested, and in many ways laid the foundation for understanding of that wretched practice in the Western World at large. It was also, however, unique in many ways, and so this episode will be devoted to exploring this darker side to Roman History. 47. Domitian: Pimp-Emperor of Rome

For the remainder of the month of January and into February, we’re going to be doing a series of episodes focusing on Ancient Rome. To start off, we’re discussing the tumultuous Year of Four Emperors during the first century C.E. that culminates in Rome’s second dynasty, the Flavians, taking over. We will give some brief background on Vespasian and his first son Titus, but we will mainly focus on Domitian, the third and final Flavian Emperor who reigned the longest, but has, undeservedly, the worst reputation of the three. 46. Sengoku III: The Taiko

In this episode, we return from Cam's fevered sojourn in the Covid-19 wilderness to discuss the unification of Japan under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, his failed (sorry, spoiler) invasion of Korea, and then set the stage for the next phase in Japanese history. It's a real hum-dinger. 44. Sengoku II: Oda Nobunaga

In this episode, we explore the rise of the great Unifiers, starting with the unexpected Underdog Oda Nobunaga, and ending with the ascendency of his low-born lieutenant, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and their quest to unify the Japanese Islands once again under one government. It’s gonna be fun, folks. 43. Sengoku I: The Onin War and the Rise of the Daimyo

This week, we begin a three part exploration of the Sengoku Jidai, The Japanese Warring States Period. During this approximately 150 year period of Japanese history, nearly constant conflict enveloped the island nation, shaping the culture and the people of that land and catapulting them towards their current state. Needless to say, this time of upheaval, warfare and intrigue is jam-packed with interesting stuff, so let’ get started. 42. The Son of Sam, pt. 2: Wicked King Wicker

Part 2 of our second American Haunting story.   Join us for the second installment on the Son of Sam as we cover his arrest, his confounding confession, and then the web of conspiracy that would begin to unravel around David Berkowitz and implicate the Process Church of the Final Judgment, a Satanic offshoot of Scientology that became famous in the countercultural movement of the late 60s and early 70s in the United States. 41. Oliver Stone‘s JFK feat. Patrick and Ian

Re-uploaded due to technical issues. This week, the LU Boys are joined once again by friends of the pod Patrick and Ian to discuss the monstrously long director's cut of Oliver Stone's JFK, a film that explores how the #CIAkilledJFK with some baffling elements thrown in. We also discuss Oliver Stone's new documentary JFK Revisited, Don DeLillo's novel Libra, and our own ideas and fascinations with the last assassination of a US president, and why it still looms so large in our collective consciousness. 40. American Utopia, pt. 3: The Italian Job

Let us warmly welcome you back into the American Utopia of Allen Dulles. First, we give a very brief recounting of America’s involvement in the Russian Civil War, and then we fast forward ahead to the 1940s when Dulles was engaging in a power struggle in Washington with Harry Truman while the early CIA dipped its toes in regime change during the 1948 Italian elections and a young congressman from Southern California began cutting his teeth with the House Un-American Activities Committee. Finally, we’ll look at how the Sauron eye of the American deep state fixed its gaze further east with Operation Splinter Factor and take a look at the first rumblings of the stay behind armies that would terrorize Europe in the coming decades.
