#29: Elsie Sieberg on Reverse Diets, Getting Over the “Fear” of Getting Bulky, and Empowerment Through Fitness

Elsie Sieberg (@elsie_sieberg) is an online fitness coach and friend of mine currently living in Florida. She's been through all the same trials and tribulations as you and I trying to sort out the mess of fitness and nutrition, and now she's coaching others to find the balance and improve their fitness and health. Elsie commonly uses what's known as a reverse diet with her clients. in the episode we spoke about what that is, how it works, and who should use it. It's an excellent way to combat chronic undereating and repair one's relationship with food. Like any nutritional protocol though, it has to be right for YOU and Elsie is also a big proponent of individualizing your fitness and health routine to fit your life. Another big topic we tackled is the ever-powerful myth that women will get "bulky" if they start lifting weights. We know this to not be true, but at times it can still be difficult to wrap our heads around it. Elsie spoke about her personal struggles combating these ideas, how she got over it and how she coaches her current clients to overcome it as well. Along those lines, lifting and getting in shape makes you feel powerful. Physically, yes. But also in every other aspect of your life. And this is really where the magic lies. Getting in the gym is not about being the smallest you can be, or the biggest you can be. It's about being the best version of yourself. And grinding through physical training is a n excellent way to unlock this. If you have further questions for Elsie on anything in this episode, or would like to hire her as a coach, you can connect with her on IG. And look out for her upcoming podcast! If you’re looking for more guidance or coaching for yourself and you’re not sure where to begin, I’d love to work with you and be your coach to help you achieve whatever fitness goals you have set for yourself. Contact me on Instagram or Twitter to get started. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. #28: Susan Niebergall on Pursuing Fitness at Any Age, Building Confidence in a Public Gym Environment, and Performance Based Fitness Goals

Susan Niebergall (@susanniebergallfitness) is a coach, author, podcaster, and an incredibly kind and intelligent human being. Susan has a book titled Fit At Any Age, her podcast is called Strong and Lean at Any Age and along with Jordan Syatt, she coaches their Inner Circle members to get in the best shape of their life.We spoke about why anyone at any age or stage of life should continue to exercise and pursue fitness goals. This also goes hand in hand with wanting to improve all other aspects of your life. It doesn’t serve anyone to simply stop growing. Many of our gym environments have changed over the course of the past two years and Susan’s is no different. Her primary gym is closing and now she’s navigating finding a new gym “home”. So we spoke about how to go about this in order to get comfortable in the new space and with the new people. It’s also important to note that as “fitness people” we still experience the same discomforts with new gym environments.Susan is a huge proponent of performance based goals. Meaning, instead of chasing “fat loss” in the gym, you should be chasing an actual gym goal – like Susan’s current goal of being able to row the 100lb dumbbell. Performance goals put everything in a positive frame of mind and allow you to actually pursue something, rather than focusing on something negative – “losing” fat – which is better accomplished by your outside-of-the-gym behaviour anyways. This was a wildly enjoyable conversation for me and one of my favourite conversations on the podcast to date, and I’m sure there will be many great lessons you can take from this episode.Once again, you can connect with Susan on IG, on her website, read her book, listen to her podcast, and learn more about the Inner Circle. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. #27: Austin Texas Recap Solo Episode - Onnit, BBQ and Living Your Life

Another solo episode recapping my recent trip to Austin, Texas. I spent 5 days in Austin and it was an INCREDIBLE time and so I figured I needed to speak about and share it, as I do. I spent most of the week hanging out at Onnit and meeting and connecting with people there. The rest of the time was spent exploring the city of Austin and letting pinball machine do it's work, as well as getting into the best BBQ ever and tons of delicious food. I loved Austin and will certainly be back to visit, and maybe even try to spend an extended period of time there. Overall lesson and message from the trip: go do the things that you want to do in your life, stop waiting or making excuses. Also, opening up spots for online coaching that I decided mid recording to add in there, so excuse my rambling... but send me a DM on IG with the word "AUSTIN" so I know you listened to this, and let's get it going. Fitness, nutrition, lifestyle, habits, LIFE: I'm your guy. Love ya!I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. #26: Andrew Coates on Maintaining Integrity in Fitness, Your Duty to Get Off the Sidelines, and the Roadmap to Social Media Growth

Andrew Coates (@AndrewCoatesFitness) is a personal trainer, podcaster, writer and now speaker from Edmonton, Alberta. He’s one of the most genuine people I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to and interacting with in the online fitness world to date. He is the host of his own podcast, The Lift Free and Diet Hard Podcast and is a regular contributor to notable fitness websites such as T-Nation, TruCoach the PTDC, Generation Iron and others. Andrew has had significant, organic growth on social media over the past 2 years and is leaving behind a roadmap for others to follow. The secret? Create relatable, shareable and high quality content, and have genuine interactions with followers and colleagues. No gimmicks and tricks… surprise, surprise.  We spoke a great deal about the importance of getting off the sidelines. Meaning, your duty to contribute to creating good content and spreading good messaging in a time and place where there is so much nonsense out there. It’s one thing to complain about the “influencers”, but if you’re not stepping into the arena, you’re not helping to solve anything. In fitness, and any other industry the “good guys” have a duty to maintain the integrity and contribute good work. Andrew and I spent most of the episode speaking on the business and behind the scenes end of things in the fitness industry, but as usual these are all translatable to your physical fitness, your life outside of the gym, and any other industry you might work in. You can connect with Andrew on Instagram, check out his podcast, view his upcoming seminars and speaking engagements as well as view his writing and publications on his website here. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. #25: Peter Tzemis on Internet Marketing, Building Wealth, and the Freedom Lifestyle

Peter Tzemis (@petertzemis) (https://petertzemis.com/) is a digital copywriter and is also my cousin. At the time we recorded this episode we were living together for several weeks in Florida. We had so many great conversations and knew one had to be recorded. Digital copywriting is something that most people don’t understand and have no idea what that even means. The best way we found to describe is “digital Don Draper”. The same way there are ads on TV and in magazines, there are ads online and you’ve certainly seen them. Well, someone writes those ads, and that’s what Peter does. We spoke about how Peter got into this world and tried to describe it as best we could. It’s not all scams and people trying to steal your money. Sure, that exists, as it does in every industry ever. Ad writing is important. It’s how people find out about good products and services. It’s just that there’s a dark side to it that each of us has to steer clear from. This line of work – and the internet as a whole – allows one to work and live nearly anywhere in the world. You no longer need to be stuffed in a tiny condo in a busy city. You can live in a big house in the country, an ocean front apartment, or anywhere else you’d like to live. And this is where the freedom lifestyle comes in. Being able to make money and create wealth to be able to live the life you want. Is this really different from fitness? I say no. You’ve got to put in the work, analyze what you’re doing, and be consistent and good at what you do. We reeled everything in to relate it to fitness as usual, and I think this is a perfect example of how lessons learned in the gym and transferrable to all aspects of our life. We definitely fed off each other’s energy in this conversation, maybe swore a little too much and got a bit ahead of ourselves at times but we reigned it back in and brought it back to Earth when appropriate. There’s a lot to learn in this conversation, and we’re both still learning ourselves. If you have further questions or would like to contact Peter, the best place is through his website https://petertzemis.com/. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. #24: Stephen Campolo on Losing 100lbs, Transforming his Life, and Coaching Others to do the Same

Stephen Campolo (@stephencampolo) is a transformation coach with an incredible story. After being fed up with being scared to take his shirt off in the pool at his own birthday parties as a teenager, he knew he had to make a change. This led Stephen down the path of fitness and nutrition which ultimately helped him lose (and keep off) over 100lbs. And now it's his mission to help others do the same. Stephen has worked with thousands of clients around the world to help them transform their bodies, and thus transform their lives. We spoke a lot about how the physical changes that happen with diet and exercise are amazing, but they're secondary to all of the non-physical changes that will happen as well. We spoke about the importance of nutrition and some of the basic principals that one must follow. We also broke down some of the common language that's used online that's not necessarily a lie, but not the whole truth. You can't eat whatever you want and have the body of your dreams. Everything in moderation and there's got to be some sacrifice. It doesn't have to control your life, but you do have to manage it. And this is exactly what Stephen does, is help clients find that balance. Stephen is also releasing a book titled The 77 Laws of Six Pack Abs that outlines ALL of the factors that go into building that dream body. Not 1 or 2 gimmicky tricks, but it covers every angle you might need to cover to have those 6 pack abs you've been working towards. The book will be available in September. Follow Stephen on IG @stephencampolo for continued updates on the release of the book and if you're looking to transform your body and your life. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. #21: Jesse Hy of Float Toronto on Floating/Sensory Deprivation, Connecting with Nature to Lead a Healthy Life, and More!

Jesse Hy is the co-founder of Float Toronto (@float_toronto) (https://float-toronto.com/) Originally from Vancouver, he and his business partner were introduced to sensory deprivation tanks, or float tanks. They dove in head first, enjoyed it first as consumers and as they learned more, decided to move to Toronto and open their own center in 2014. Floating is a tricky experience to explain, because it’s truly like no other. You lay in a large tank filled with a few inches of warm water that is loaded with Epsom salt. So much salt that you easily float on the surface of the water. The tank closes and there is no sense of weight, no sound, no sight (you can choose to keep the lights on if you please, but the fullest experience is with the lights off), and barely any sense of feeling. The water is heated to a temperature similar to our bodies temperature, such that when you’re in it, you lose sense of where your body ends. The idea of the tank is to remove all sensory input – an environment we can’t really experience anywhere else. There are innumerable physical, emotional, and psychological benefits to floating. The heavy concentration of magnesium in the salt is excellent for nearly all cellular functions in our body. It’s great for helping with muscle soreness, aches and pains. As well as the weightlessness is great for pressure relief. Being in the tank allows for the opportunity for quite a deep meditative state. With no sensory distractions, it’s just you and your thoughts. And you can take that as deep as you’d like. Jesse does a far better job explaining what floating is, why it’s useful, and the best practices to have the best experience possible in the tank. We also spoke about the importance of holistic living especially through drinking fresh spring water. The link to the find a spring program Jesse mentioned can be found here or on IG. Float Toronto is located near Queen and Dufferin at (address) in Toronto. Jesse also named several other Float centers in the GTA. But nearly any city you live in will have a float center, and both Jesse and I highly recommend you check it out!You can follow Float Toronto on IG, and check out their website to book a float.  I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback.
