Kenosis: What Did Christ Empty?It just seemed too incredible for modern rational and ‘scientific’ people to believe that Jesus Christ could be truly human and fully, absolutely God at the same time. The kenosis theory began to sound more and more like an acceptable way to say that (in some sense) Jesus was God, but a kind of God who had for a time given up some of his Godlike qualities, those that were most difficult for people to accept in the modern world. Charismatic pastors and teachers have not made the conversation any easier. Guys like Todd White and Bill Johnson have used some pretty novel language when attempting to articulate kenosis theory, which has mucked up the conversation with every discernment ministry crying "heresy". How the Church Fathers Balanced Liturgy & SpontaneityYou ever been in one of those services where the Spirit of God was so tangible that the staff canceled the sermon, the offering, and communion so that we could continue in worship? Well back in my pentecostal days, it wasn't all that uncommon for us to do just that. But is it a good thing to throughout the liturgy (order of service) for spontaneity? On the other hand, should we be so liturgical that there is never room for spontaneous expressions of worship? Oddly enough the Church fathers might have an answer for us. In this episode Josh Hoffert, Matthew Esquivel, and Father Ron Drummond are doing a survey of the church fathers, looking for their balance of liturgy and spontaneity. Gnosticizing Scripture: Finding Deeper and more "Spiritual Meaning" In ScriptureWhat happens when one decides to find a deeper, more spiritual meaning behind a given text, not only a meaning that is profound but specifically unique to your circumstances? Well, you gnosticize that mug. Look, I believe God still speaks today outside of scripture. I don't think that it is impossible or even unlikely that God would speak to you as you read the Bible.
