(104) The Life Changing Art of Simplicity

How often do we over-complicate things when really it is all simple? If we work on simplifying many aspects of our life, we will generate much greater focus & freedom!  Simplifying is often linked with minimalism or the Marie Kondo method of sorting material possessions. Decluttering your physical space can greatly contribute to a sense of inner peace and well-being.  Simplicity can be related to many other areas in your life: reducing the amounts of goals that you have thought you can be laser-focused on the goals that matter most to you.  Work projects, processes, can also do with a good amount of simplifying! Look at your workload with new eyes and ask yourself: what is unnecessary? What can change, delete or delegate?  Social life and friendships, as harsh as this may sound, can also benefit from this. Being extremely mindful of how you spend your time and energy, and which friends you choose to spend time with is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.  Digital world! How many apps clutter your phone, folders on your computer, or email addresses? Simplifying the lot can help you to think more clearly and gain focus and mental space!  I used to be a fairly scattered person (there is a reason why I got into focus!) and I have found, time and time again, that a good dose of simplifying can be real magic! When you are feeling scattered, or overwhelmed, simplify your life and your commitments.  Mentioned in this episode: The minimalists' podcast The life-changing magic of tidying up, Marie Kondo VIDEO of this episode: YouTube VideoABOUT Katie Stoddart: Katie Stoddart is an award-winning, international, high-performance coach. (102) 3 Ways To Release Your Creativity

You might want to be more creative but feel stuck and blocked. This can happen for several reasons and there are a few ways to get un-stuck.  Creativity can be blocked when: you are going through a challenging time in your life, when you have not rested or played enough, if you fear imperfection, after a period where you have created a lot! Journaling is a great method to help you to release and unleash your creativity. The morning pages, recommended by Julia Cameron for instance, can help you with reducing the judgment and being more accepting of your creativity. It can also give you more clarity on your work, your goals, your ideas, etc.  Lack of rest impacts your creativity a lot! If your mind is always racing, then you don’t have the mental space to create! Taking a weekend away in nature, a day off, or unplugging for several days, might be all it takes to get the creative juices flowing again.  Seek inspiration from books, videos, conversations, new experiences, podcasts etc. Sometimes all it takes is a dose of inspiration to spark a new idea or concept!  Creativity is a fascinating topic with so many different angles and aspects to it! If you are feeling stuck, remember that this is an indication that you need a break. Lack of creativity can be a great indication of how we are feeling, how our workload is etc. It is useful information that can raise our awareness and can be used to modify our environment. Once you are rested, play more, and journal, creativity will pour back into your life!  Mentioned in this episode: The artist’s Way by Julia Cameron VIDEO of this episode: YouTube Video ABOUT Katie Stoddart: Katie Stoddart is an award-winning, international, high-performance coach. (100) Focus: The Magic Door to Freedom and Fulfilment

Focus is one of the topics I am most passionate about! I have found, time and time again that focus contributes to freedom and fulfillment.  There are three types of focus: short-term focus (on the task at hand), long-term focus (goals & directions), selective focus (thoughts & emotions) Short-term focus helps you to work effectively on any activity. This helps you to be inflow. Flow, also known as optimal experience, makes you feel fulfilled at the moment, and also is one of the main factors of high levels of productivity.  Long-term focus – clarity on your goals – provides you with a clear direction. This gives you the freedom to decide how you want to reach your goals. Having a clear direction actually provides you with freedom – and it also contributes to your fulfillment.  Selective focus comes down to managing your thoughts and emotions. Focusing on what is in your control – your own thoughts, emotions, and actions – drastically shifts how you place your attention and energy. You feel more fulfilled the more you develop this ability to switch between different thoughts and manage your feelings.  Focus is a fantastic vehicle for freedom and fulfillment. It is one of the fundamental tools that can support you in leading a fulfilled life. It spreads its light and magic in all areas of your life!  Mentioned in this episode: Flow, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi VIDEO of this episode: YouTube VideoABOUT Katie Stoddart: Katie Stoddart is an award-winning, international, high-performance coach. (98) Pareto and Parkinson: Get More Work Done in Less Time

There are many different methods that can help you to boost your productivity and efficiency. Two of the key ways are Pareto Principle and Parkinson’s law.  Pareto principle: the 80/20 rule. Knowing that 20% of your work contributes to 80% of your achievements. In other words, what are the main activities that enhance your performance? Once you are clear on these activities, you can focus more on them, and diminish or eliminate the rest.  The Pareto principle shows up in many areas in our life: work, relationships, well-being, etc. By consciously looking for the 20%, you can greatly reduce your workload and only focus on the activities that matter most.  Parkinson’s law: Work expands to fill the allotted time. If you give yourself a tight deadline by which you need to accomplish an activity, you are likely to be able to achieve it in that time.  Parkinson’s law can force you to think differently, take shortcuts, avoid perfectionism and overcome procrastination.  Combining Pareto Principle and Parkinson’s law is a powerful combination for achieving greater results at a faster pace. They help you to think strategically and not to get caught up in less important tasks.  Mentioned in this episode: The artist’s Way by Julia Cameron VIDEO of this episode: YouTube VideoABOUT Katie Stoddart: Katie Stoddart is an award-winning, international, high-performance coach. (96) The Surprising Benefits of Cold Showers

Cold showers have so many incredible benefits that I feel that I talk about them all the time. It really is incredible what a few minutes in a cold shower can do for our mind and body.  Stimulates alertness and put us in a good mood! Nothing more fantastic than the post-cold shower feeling. They make you feel more focused!  Cold exposure helps with muscle recuperation after a workout and is a great boost for the immune system! I know many people who have been taking cold showers for years now and have not been sick once in that whole period of time.  It is a fantastic exercise for your discipline and your willpower. The more uncomfortable it feels for you, the more you are strengthening your willpower. This means that you start your day with success and a boost!  Putting your body under physical stress, helps you to cope with mental stress!  To do cold showers, start with your legs and arms a few times, before going over your whole body. Be mindful of your breathing and not ‘force’. Obviously, if you are sick, or have cardio issues, then cold showers are to be avoided. But for the vast majority of us, cold showers are great!  Cold showers are a great asset to increase your energy, make you feel great and boost willpower and self-discipline! I cannot recommend this enough – it has really done wonders for me and other people in my life!   Mentioned in this episode: Wim HofVIDEO of this episode: YouTube VideoABOUT Katie Stoddart: Katie Stoddart is an award-winning, international, high-performance coach.
