#116: Attend Industry Specific Events, with Stacy Tuschl
Stacy Tuschl is a speaker, business coach, and the owner of The Academy of Performing Arts in Wisconsin. She is the author of the book "Is Your Business Worth Saving?" where she reveals proven strategies for pulling entrepreneurs out of a rut and launching them toward business success. I recently got back from an industry specific event and it was such a great refresher. It was also a big wake up call because I realized that I needed to really stay on top of the systems that get used in my business. We've all heard people say work on your business, not in your business, and I make that a reality. However, systems can get really dated and not as effective when you aren't the one physically doing it anymore. So all of sudden you watch someone do something they way you said to do it and you realized that the system is two years old and it needs updating. Some highlights include: You need to be involved in industry specific events as well as events that deal with a bunch of different industries. At industry specific events, you will learn best practices for your industry, but by going to events that deal with multiple industries, you will pick up ideas from other industries that you can implement in your own. Your competition might not have these ideas, so it's a great way to stand out. (minute 1:00) I have been very, very busy, personally and professionally, and I slacked a little bit on going to any industry specific events. When I attended one recently, I learned about how important it is to check your systems annually. (minute 3:00) Even if you can't attend an event for personal or professional reasons, send someone to the event. Send someone who will take the notes for you and bring back great ideas. But make sure you send the right person. Some employees get overwhelmed and others get excited. (minute 5:00) Resources: My media kit Ask me a question! Join our Level Up Community! #113: 3 Important Steps of Delegation, with Stacy Tuschl
Today we're going to be talking about the three steps that are really important when you are delegating. It's not as simple as giving someone a list of things to do and they will magically have it delivered to you within 24 hours. Some highlights include: The first step is getting clear and organized with what you need to happen. If you don't know what needs to get done, how is the other person you are trying to hold accountable supposed to know? (minute 1:00) The second step is communicating with the person you are delegating with. You need to make sure you give them an opportunity to ask any questions before agreeing on it. Don't make it one sided. (minute 3:00) The third step is the follow up. When you come to an agreement, actually follow up at the time it's supposed to be complete if you haven't heard or received the completed project. Need some tools for keeping track and following up? At minute 4:00, I talk about the tools that I use. Resources: My media kit Ask me a question! Join our Level Up Community! #110: How to Share Your Credibility, with Stacy Tuschl
I've recently been working on my media kit, and while working on it I've been thinking a lot about credibility. Of course we need credibility, but are we too focused on it? Today we're going to be digging deep on this topic. Some highlights include: Credibility is all about someone else saying you're amazing. Think about it. What would make you more likely to work with me? Would you do it because I said I'm amazing? Or would you rather hear that I'm amazing from one of my clients? (minute 1:00) There was a time where I was very focused on winning an award with my dance studio. I wasted a lot of time working on winning an award that nobody cares about, and I lost. I should have been focused on gaining more customers. (minute 2:00) Most people who go to your website won't leave the home page. Anything that you want people to know about you, put on the home page. (minute 5:00) Share what you need to be sharing with everyone because you never know when someone might be hearing or reading you for the first time. (minute 7:00) You can leave out what you aren't good at. Don't lie, but don't talk about what you're not good at. You wouldn't invite me over to your spotless kitchen and tell me your bedroom is messy. (minute 9:00) Resources: My media kit Ask me a question! Join our Level Up Community! Chris Guillebeau is a writer, traveler, and entrepreneur. In 2013 he completed a 10-year quest to visit every country in the world before his 35th birthday. Every summer in Portland, Oregon he hosts the World Domination Summit, a gathering of creative, remarkable people. His new book, "Born for This," will help you find the work you were meant to do. In this episode, Chris and Stacy discuss building a business that truly fits the life you want to lead and some of the options that you have. You don't need your business to reflect anyone's ideals but your own! Some highlights include: "I was 19, and I didn't want to work for anyone else." At minute 1:00, Chris talks about jumping into entrepreneurship because he wanted to work but didn't want a boss. He also talks about how his career has evolved since that time. People have different learning styles. At minute 8:00, Chris talks about why a formal mentorship might not be the best strategy for every person starting a business. Have a healthy life and do work you love doing.
