The Great Unlearn
Cal Callahan
We grew up in a world we didn’t create. And one idea after the next—whether it was culture or society—we were told how to look, how to feel, and who to be. We were told that if we checked off the “right” boxes (think: career, car, money), we’d feel good, we’d be whole, and—naturally—we’d be set. But, turns out, there’s more to the story. On The Great Unlearn, Cal dives into unlearning and questioning what the world taught us, and—in the process—how to be the truest version of yourself, minus the bullshit. Whether it’s figuring out how to navigate a relationship, dealing with your emotions, diving into spirituality, or just feeling comfortable in your own skin, Cal and friends navigate the choppy waters of what it really takes to unlearn all the ideas we took for granted, and how to be the best version of what, sometimes, can be so hard to be: yourself.

Laura Coe | Emotional Obesity, The Art of Authenticity, & The Akashic Records
I’ve known Laura Coe for over 20 years, but we hadn’t really connected since our 20s before she reached out to me a couple of years ago. It was initially for some advice, but Laura actually ended up catalyzing some huge shifts in my life — a wonderful conversation on her show The Art of Authenticity (https://lauracoe.com/cal-callihan/) helped me realize I love making podcasts and her support as a coach helped me overcome the self-doubt I was struggling with as I tried to uplevel my life and unlearn the programming that was holding me back. Laura is also the author of Emotional Obesity: A Philosophical Guide to Lighten Your Life (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QXXFUKS) and, as both as an author and as a coach, she helps others understand esoteric philosophical ideas and ancient wisdom so that they anyone can apply these important (but often linguistically obscure) lessons to their own lives. One of the ancient tools she uses is the Akashic records and, if you haven’t heard of this before, you’re in for a treat in this episode — it’s fascinating, and it ties into why Laura reached out to me in the first place. We Discuss: 06:15 - A story about 20-year-old Cal 10:20 - Recognizing that surrender isn’t always a bad thing 14:20 - Sitting in stillness to learn about yourself 18:30 - How society causes us to internalize certain ideas about our identity and self 28:40 - We’re here for lessons 30:45 - The Akashic records 40:35 - How we’re all being sold fake truths and solutions online 47:05 - When we look to others for models for success, is it coming from fear and lack or is it coming from a place of interest in knowledge? 54:00 - Accepting that there is no end goal to spiritual or personal growth that you can achieve in one human lifetime Resources: Listen to my interview on Laura’s show: “Cal Callihan: Wall Street to Spiritual Warrior” (https://lauracoe.com/cal-callihan/) Read: Emotional Obesity: A Philosophical Guide to Lighten Your Life (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QXXFUKS) Sign up for my monthly newsletter: thegreatunlearn.com/newsletter (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/newsletter) The Mastery of Love (https://www.amazon.com/Mastery-Love-Practical-Relationship-Toltec/dp/1878424424/ref=pd_sbs_14_3/147-8053530-7502953?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1878424424&pd_rd_r=13795026-de79-4bed-bf6c-1478475ad62c&pd_rd_w=QwD3n&pd_rd_wg=1mMdO&pf_rd_p=7cd8f929-4345-4bf2-a554-7d7588b3dd5f&pf_rd_r=HNM0QKV9Z8FTSQ0MA6XM&psc=1&refRID=HNM0QKV9Z8FTSQ0MA6XM) by Don Miguel Ruiz The Mastery of Self (https://www.amazon.com/Mastery-Self-Toltec-Personal-Freedom/dp/1938289692/ref=pd_sbs_14_4/147-8053530-7502953?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1938289692&pd_rd_r=13795026-de79-4bed-bf6c-1478475ad62c&pd_rd_w=QwD3n&pd_rd_wg=1mMdO&pf_rd_p=7cd8f929-4345-4bf2-a554-7d7588b3dd5f&pf_rd_r=HNM0QKV9Z8FTSQ0MA6XM&psc=1&refRID=HNM0QKV9Z8FTSQ0MA6XM) by Don Miguel Ruiz Connect with Laura Coe: Website | lauracoe.com (http://lauracoe.com/) Instagram | www.instagram.com/laurascoe (https://www.instagram.com/laurascoe/) Twitter | twitter.com/laurascoe (https://twitter.com/laurascoe) Facebook | www.facebook.com/emotionalobesity (https://www.facebook.com/emotionalobesity) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv)

Mat Fisher | Learning to Be On Purpose
I first met Mat Fisher when I was seeking out a mentor to train me in TRE, or Trauma Release Exercises. Created by Dr. David Berceli, TRE is a simple yet innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. That may seem like a weird concept — and it was to me when I first heard of it — but I experienced the benefits of these exercises first-hand so I wanted to learn more about it. The funny thing is, when I first reached out to Mat, I didn’t hear anything back. I started to make all of these assumptions and judgments about why, but as it turned out, he just wasn’t coaching anymore and didn’t check that email address. (You know what they say about assumptions, right?) However, when he eventually saw it, something in my email shifted Mat; he felt called to dust off the gym shorts and the whistle to coach me. And I couldn’t be more grateful. Fast forward to today, Mat is one of my most trusted brothers. In this conversation, you will get a glimpse at the depth of character and the quality of inquiry that Mat wields. Having these types of conversations with Mat definitely helped catalyze the Great Unlearning journey I’m on today. He has a unique way of asking questions and framing the world, and if you really take a moment to consider the questions he asks and do some of that inner work with us, those small internal shifts can really make a huge difference in the way you approach life. We Discuss: 04:30 - Why the exercise community is like the trunk of a tree 10:00 - Learning to show up as the person who I want to be (and not the person who I think I’m supposed to be) 14:55 - Why did I build such a strong suit of emotional armor when I was younger? 18:30 - Owning the fear 25:10 - Creating the software of your own operating system 30:10 - Being empathetic and understanding as a parent 39:45 - What happens when you’re on a pedestal 49:15 - Being on purpose 53:50 - Embodying both masculine and feminine energy 56:30 - A different view on trauma and history 01:08:30 - Learning from your triggers (and not quieting them) Resources: The Four Agreements: www.thefouragreements.com (http://www.thefouragreements.com/) Trauma Releasing Exercises: traumaprevention.com (http://traumaprevention.com/) Mankind Project: mankindproject.org (http://mankindproject.org/) Adyashanti 5-day silent retreat: www.adyashanti.org/programs/retreats-experience (https://www.adyashanti.org/programs/retreats-experience) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv) Google Play | http://bit.ly/2sehHUE (http://bit.ly/2sehHUE) Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6 (http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6) If you are called to support the podcast, please share the show with a friend!!! Bill Rancic | Working In to Level Up
Many of you may be familiar with Bill Rancic through his work on The Apprentice, where he was the season one winner before staying on for several seasons as a judge. In addition to being a TV personality, Bill is an accomplished author, popular speaker, and serial entrepreneur — but the reason I brought him onto the show is that he’s a great friend. Our relationship quickly developed from casual acquaintance to bonafide bromance because Bill is one of those guys who can get real, who is willing to share the things that are most challenging to him in an effort to move through them and grow. And that right there — that’s a step we all have to make on this Great Unlearning journey. We Discuss: 05:15 - The experiences that shaped Bill into who he is today & Bill’s first syrupy entrepreneurial venture 08:25 - Encouraging children to ask questions 10:40 - Self-interrogation 15:00 - Navigating the uncharted territory of self 18:00 - Choosing to define success for yourself & waking up to gratitude 23:15 - Shedding the macho exterior to share stories about when you were most vulnerable so that you — and the people around you — can grow 35:00 - Figuring out the Why behind shitty circumstances 41:30 - Crafting a vision for the next five years 46:30 - Inviting people into your life who will call you on your shit 49:50 - The power of potential 52:30 - Working in Connect with Bill Rancic: Website | www.billrancic.com (http://www.billrancic.com/) Instagram | www.instagram.com/billrancic (https://www.instagram.com/billrancic/?hl=en) Twitter | twitter.com/billrancic (https://twitter.com/billrancic) Facebook | www.facebook.com/billrancic (https://www.facebook.com/billrancic/) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv) Google Play | http://bit.ly/2sehHUE (http://bit.ly/2sehHUE) Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6 (http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6) If you are called to support the podcast, please share the show with a friend!!! Lauren Bay-Regula | Life as an Olympian, Mom, & Entrepreneur: The Ups, Downs, & Games
Lauren Bay-Regula is a mother of three, a business owner, and a two-time Olympian who is currently training for her third Olympic appearance on the Canadian softball team. She and her husband, Dave Regula, have experienced the difficulty of maintaining your body, your mind, your business, and your family all at the same time. You don’t want any of those plates to drop, but it’s a struggle keeping them all in the air at the same time. And things didn’t always go well. There were some dark years in there, and depression put up one hell of a fight. But because they had each other — and because they were willing to put aside their egos and ask for help — both Lauren and Dave are still spinning those plates and crushing every aspect of their lives. We often put Olympic athletes up on a pedestal, like their lives are somehow different than ours. But Lauren reminds us that being an Olympian, being a parent, being a business owner — it’s all hard, it’s all worth doing, and we often don’t give ourselves enough credit for making it through some tough shit. We Discuss: 00:02:30 - The parents who taught Lauren that sports are play 00:05:30 - Why “you want to be an athlete, you don’t want to be a softball player or basketball player,” and how parents are pushing their children to play sports in potentially unhealthy ways 00:13:05 - Life as an Olympic softball player + meeting her husband 00:15:25 - Coming out of retirement to pitch in the world championships as a 35-year-old mother of three 0016:30 - Lauren walked away from softball and didn’t play for eight years — so why did she decide to come back? 00:20:00 - How a difficult move led to the lowest point of Lauren and Dave’s life together 00:25:40 - Making it through seven long years of postpartum depression 00:30:50 - The part of depression that we almost never hear about 00:39:00 - The unreasonable expectation that mothers should have motherhood all figured out 00:43:10 - Letting go of the past to live in the present 00:53:00 - Going back to the Olympics for the 3rd time 00:59:30 - Actively working on your relationship and being willing to have conversations that suck 01:08:00 - What and who are driving Lauren and Dave to keep going 01:14:10 - “When you criticize your children, they don’t stop loving you — they stop loving themselves.” 01:16:25 - Strong Mom Strong Family 01:27:00 - The importance of finding your tribe Resources: Join Lauren’s FB Group: Strong Mom Strong Family (https://www.facebook.com/groups/193749661226193/) Download the Strong Mom Strong Family Free Guide (https://jointrakathletics.com/secrets-of-a-strong-mom36004348) Finding Mastery Podcast (https://findingmastery.net/category/podcasts/) Connect with Lauren Bay-Regula: Website | trakathletics.com (https://trakathletics.com/) Instagram | instagram.com/laurenregula (https://www.instagram.com/laurenregula/) Facebook | facebook.com/people/Lauren-Bay-Regula/100008001136700 (https://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Bay-Regula/100008001136700) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv) Google Play | http://bit.ly/2sehHUE (http://bit.ly/2sehHUE) Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6 (http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6) If you are called to support the podcast, please share the show with a...

Kyle Kingsbury | Don’t Just Do It, Be It
As Director of Human Optimization at Onnit and host of the Kyle Kingsbury Podcast, Kyle Kingsbury is a living example of the optimized human. His desk is a smorgasbord of cutting edge supplements, esoteric equipment, manuals on biohacking, and texts on spiritual development, and he devotes his time to taking in as much information as possible so that he can apply and test that knowledge on himself. And when Kyle talks about optimization, he isn’t just talking about fine-tuning your body — although, damn, you should look at this guy — he’s also talking about the mental, emotional, and spiritual work that we have to do if we want to live better. I am constantly inspired and in awe at the work that Kyle puts into improving himself so that he can teach others how to do the same, and that’s why he’s the perfect choice to kick off our Great Unlearning Journey. We Discuss: 00:03:35 - The 3 major turning points in Kyle’s life after he retired from the UFC 00:04:45 - Plant medicine + the non-psychedelic tools that can help us live better 00:07:55 - The first moment Cal surrendered and found stillness—while being shot at 00:13:15 - Why you should stop just doing and start being 00:18:25 - Reframing your past to open your heart and create your future 00:21:55 - Who is your greatest teacher? 00:28:10 - An LSD journey in Arizona that didn’t go exactly as planned 00:38:20 - The ways that we teach & learn 00:50:10 - Working in Resources: Watch Cal on The Kyle Kingsbury Podcast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7Q0exBcf_A) Onnit (https://www.onnit.com/) Paleo f(x) (https://www.paleofx.com/) (https://www.the49thmystic.com/main-landing-page) by Ted Dekker (https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Mystics-Beyond-Circle-Dekker/dp/080072979X) by Ted Dekker The Art of Breath (https://powerspeedendurance.com/artofbreath/) (http://www.warriorsofstillness.com/) by Jan Diepersloot (https://www.amazon.com/How-Eat-Move-Healthy-Personalized/dp/B01FODDJ5A) By Paul Chek Connect with Kyle Kingsbury: Website | https://www.kingsbu.com/ (https://www.kingsbu.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/kingsbu/ (https://www.instagram.com/kingsbu/?hl=en) Twitter | https://twitter.com/kingsbu (https://twitter.com/kingsbu) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv) Google Play | http://bit.ly/2sehHUE (http://bit.ly/2sehHUE) Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6 (http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6) If you are called to support the podcast, please share the show with a friend!!! Welcome to The Great Unlearn
My intention with this episode is to introduce myself — formally Jon Callahan, but known to most as Cal — and share the capital-W Why behind starting The Great Unlearn. I originally wrote a script for this, but as I was reading it, I just wasn’t sure if that was the right way to introduce the real me. So I asked some friends for their advice — shout out to Carrie Doll and Dave Regula for the assist — and they came through big time. And that’s really a big part of what I want people to get out of this show: we’ve been taught that high achievers should buckle down, muscle through, and try to do everything alone, but that’s BS advice. The people who really accomplish a lot, the people who really change lives, know when to ask for help — and I want my show to be a source for advice and stories that will help us all on this journey to becoming the best versions of ourselves. More than that, the people who really live fulfilling lives don’t do what they were told they should do. They dive deep, interrogate themselves, and figure that shit out themselves. I’m still early in this journey, but I hope you’ll walk it alongside me. There will be tears (there might already be a few in this episode) but I know that we’ll be able to walk farther together. We Discuss: 00:05:30 - The catalyst for my awakening: the mass shooting on October 1st, 2017 00:10:50 - Asking yourself, for the first time, “Why the fuck am I here?” 00:11:45 - Unlearning the lies and unspoken agreements that were drilled into us as kids, from our parents and society as a whole 00:18:00 - The Great Unlearn isn’t about throwing away everything we learned — it’s about questioning them, maybe for the first time, and deciding whether or not those agreements serve us 00:20:00 - The idea of “Working In” (as opposed to Working Out) 00:22:00 - Why I chose The Great Unlearn as the title for this show 00:25:30 - Maximization Vs. Optimization 00:34:40 - My favorite quote: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” 00:48:50 - A text from a friend that rocks me to my core (in a good way) every time I read it 00:54:30 - Only speaking from direct experience 00:59:05 - “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.” Resources: Listen to my interview on The Inner Circle with Carrie Doll (https://www.carriedoll.co/post/cal-callahan) Chekinstitute.com (https://chekinstitute.com/) Drjoedispenza.com (https://drjoedispenza.com/) Burningman.org (https://burningman.org/) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv) Google Play | http://bit.ly/2sehHUE (http://bit.ly/2sehHUE) Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6 (http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6) If you are called to support the podcast, please share the show with a friend!!! Opening the Kimono: What is The Great Unlearn?
My name is Jon Callahan — you can call me Cal — and I invite you to join me as we dive deep into understanding and undoing the programming within us.
We were told that if we look a certain way, act a certain way, and follow the “right” path, that we would get everything: a 40-year career, a nice car, and enough 0’s at the end of our paycheck. But, along the way, you discovered that, perhaps, that isn’t what you wanted, that isn’t what makes you feel whole, that isn’t what makes you feel fulfilled.
So it’s time to start asking questions and unlearning the BS that we were fed growing up.
I’m excited to embark on this journey with all of you. It’s difficult to navigate these choppy waters alone — to unlearn all the ideas we took for granted — but, if we can lean on each other for support, I know we can all learn how to actually be the best version of ourselves.
