139 – A Deep Breath Doesn’t Calm Me Down! 2 Reasons Why Your Nervous System Isn’t Responding to Breathwork as You Know It
We know the scene – everyone’s driving you crazy, you’re trying your best not to lose it, so you pause and take a deep breath. But what if that deep breath doesn’t seem to make much of a difference? What if you’re still aggravated, annoyed, frustrated, and upset - and you wonder if breathwork just doesn’t work for you. In today’s episode, Michelle coaches on how certain types of breathing can actually activate our sypathetic nervous system – the part of our body that amps up for the action of fight or flight. When we activate our sympathetic nervous system with breath, it can actually make all our big feelings even bigger. Listen in as Michelle teaches about the mistakes you might be making when you use breath to regulate your nervous system, and what to do instead so that breathwork can be a powerful tool to help calm your body when you need it. Have you ever been told that you’re nice to a fault? Maybe you’ve wondered whether you should have some limits around your “niceness". And so, by the time we connect at night, it's a continuation of the intimacy we've had all day. Think about the opposite - you don't connect in the kitchen, you don't connect all day - and then in the evening when your husband's like “hey”, there's a disconnect because now you want me to open up and make love and hang from the chandelier. But we haven't emotionally connected all day, and so now all of a sudden, I’m supposed to rev up this engine that hasn't been running all day. It doesn't work that way.” — >>> 💌 DOWNLOAD THE NERVOUS SYSTEM RESET GUIDE 💌 <<<

131 - Surprising Ways We’ve All Experienced Childhood Trauma – 3 Categories of Trauma and Toxic Stress
We've all experienced some sort of childhood trauma – yes, even you. In today’s episode, we explore how so many childhood experiences we dismiss as “normal” can actually be quite traumatic to our nervous system. Trauma isn’t just what happened to us or around us. Trauma is what happened within us, because of what happened around us. This awareness is huge because our unprocessed childhood trauma has a huge impact on our adult lives. The signs of dysregulation we experience – emotional volatility, edginess, snapping, difficulty focusing, gut issues, etc. – are all predictable, expected, and normal responses to our life experiences. This is encouraging, friends. It means that we’re not broken and we don’t need fixing. It simply means that we’re holding unprocessed trauma and stress that we need to learn how to release and heal – which is exactly what I coach on in this episode. Don’t miss it!
