Thekla Teunis and Gijs Boers, cofounders of Grounded  They are working to bring the agriculture sector in Africa back into balance. We luckily had time to cover many things in this podcast and to discuss how regenerative agriculture really works in practise on the ground in Southern Africa. The key take-aways:Listening to farmers, (really really listen) they know what could work well on their land, even if they don’t grow that mix of crops today because of circumstances forcing them to choose for short term solutionsIt is essential to find the right local crop mixWhen you are working with farmers and really listen, business cases will emerge, but you can't have a strict 10 year planningThere are huge opportunities in local processing in Africa, due to long distances to markets, challenging infrastructure, and it makes a lot of sense to process locallyLocal processing makes it possible to pay farmers for Regenerative agricultureAnd this offers many opportunities for (patient) Impact InvestorsShow notes and links:www.investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/2017/04/29/thekla-teunis-gijs-boers. ----------------------------------------------------------- For feedback, ideas, suggestions please contact us through Twitter @KoenvanSeijen, or get in touch through the website www.investinginregenerativeagriculture.com. 02 Tony Lovell, regenerate soils with a 100M fund and many cows

Mainly talking about their Australian projects where they use livestock to regenerate the soils. They had some tough first years of the fund (two of of the worst droughts ever recorded) but things seems to be going better now. We also talked about the resistance innovators like SLM face when doing something different in a conservative sector like agriculture. Both from the farmers side as from the investors side, it takes a lot of courage (or necessity) to try something different. Some more points we touched in the interview:Regenerative Agriculture isn’t spreadsheet agricultureWe are building a little village around each grass plantStress on animals is the biggest hidden cost on livestock Your investment, is based on biology Where does it (regenerative agriculture) fit in a portfolio, not connected to other asset classes, oil prices etc. What role does regenerative agriculture play in your portfolio? Is it solid and stable enough for a decade or longer?Show notes and links:www.investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/2017/02/07/tony-lovell. ----------------------------------------------------------- For feedback, ideas, suggestions please contact us through Twitter @KoenvanSeijen, or get in touch through the website www.investinginregenerativeagriculture.com.
