Professor Timothy Caulfield is a Canada Research Chair in health law and policy, a professor in the Faculty of Law and the School of Public Health, and a research director of the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta. However, he is most well-known for being a misinformation debunker, having written several bestselling books, including The Cure for Everything; The Vaccination Picture; The Science of Celebrity… Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?; and, most recently, Relax: A Guide to Everyday Health Decisions with More Facts and Less Worry. He is also the host and co-producer of the award-winning documentary TV show, A User’s Guide to Cheating Death, which aired in over 60 countries and was on Netflix. We start off by answering the question, “are birds real?” and the answer may surprise you. It surprised me. Really. We also talked about the lure of celebrity misinformation, why it is critical that we join the fight against misinformation, leveraging the power of cognitive bias to disseminate correct information, and why he would not have gone on the Doctor Oz Show. Over the past several years, Caulfield has been involved in a variety of interdisciplinary research endeavors that have allowed him to publish more than 350 articles and book chapters. A health psychologist by training, Dr. Margaret Hay has worked in health professional education for the past 2 decades in both curriculum governance and teaching roles. She is the inaugural Head of the Monash Centre for Professional Development and Monash Online Education in the Portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Monash University. Prior to this, she was the inaugural Director of Professional and Continuing Education, and the inaugural Director of the Monash Institute for Health & Clinical Education in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences, Monash University. She has supervised to completion of 19 Doctoral research projects, and been thrice nominated for Supervisor Awards, and is currently supervising a range of Ph.D. and Master's projects in health professions education, having transitioned from her research in health psychology. She is Australian and spent some time studying in the US, so we compare the medical education systems of both countries. We also discuss what the admissions process is really designed to select for, why diversity of educational background leads to better outcomes, why medical education should follow students’ lead, and how to teach without making the learner feel like garbage. Dr. Arian Nachat is an emergency medicine and palliative care physician, which to me was a surprising combination, so we start the discussion with why emergency medicine physicians are well suited for palliative care. Most recently, she founded Pallity which brings together resources to educate, empower and enable patients with life-altering illness to live their life to their fullest potential. Dr. Nachat currently practices emergency medicine and serves as clinical faculty at Balboa Naval Medical Center and the VA Medical Center in San Diego, California. She founded Kaiser’s first inpatient integrative symptoms management service in northern California, served on the State of Oregon opiate prescribing task force, and is an exam item writer for the American Board of Internal Medicine. This discussion mostly centered around a Twitter interaction from a few months prior where two male physicians were discussing why female physicians are burning out faster than men. Dr. Nachat noted that a lot of salient issues had been neglected so that’s what we discussed today and how institutions can address them, including on-site childcare. Dr. Simon Maltais is an active cardiac surgeon and author of Healthcare Anonymous: Learn How to Put Yourself First While Pursuing a Calling. Many of you know Dr. Jimmy Turner. He calls himself the Physician Philosopher and this is his second time on the show. Terry Ciesla is the senior vice president of Scribe EMR, a remote scribing company that provides remote scribing, coding, and a variety of virtual assistance services.
