Dr. Sanj Katyal is making his third appearance on the podcast. He is a radiologist, author, coach and student of positive psychology. Sanj discovered positive psychology as an attending, whereas Jordyn discovered it as an undergrad, and both have Masters degrees in it. She’s currently a second-year psychiatry resident at Mt. Sinai and already extremely accomplished. In fact, she just published her first book, Choose Growth: A workbook for Transcending Trauma, Fear and Self-Doubt. They discovered each other and have been collaborating ever since. Jacqueline Clancy is a certified legal nurse consultant and expert witness who specializes in cases involving delay of care and interfacility transfers. Anupam Bapu Jena, MD, PhD, is the Joseph P. Newhouse Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and a physician in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. As an economist and physician, Dr. Jena’s research involves several areas of health economics and policy including the use of natural experiments in health care, the economics of physician behavior and the physician workforce, medical malpractice, the economics of health care productivity, and the economics of medical innovation. We talk about the natural experiments that he uses in economics to move medicine forward, what the pandemic has taught him about how people make their health decisions. We also talk about the limited impact that value-based care and price transparency have had and how this is unlikely to change any time soon. Dr. Jena graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sandman Legal Services is the nation’s only law firm dedicated to the needs of medical expert witnesses and consultants. Eric Gantwerker, MD, MS, MMSc (MedEd), FACS is back for a second interview. He is a pediatric otolaryngologist at Cohen Children’s Hospital at Northwell Health, associate professor of otolaryngology at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra, and vice president/ medical director at Level Ex, a medical videogame company.
