The Forgotten Stories of Medicine with The Poor Historian Podcast
This episode is sponsored by Charm Economics. This episode features Dr. Max Nanes and Dr. Mike Berger, hosts of the Poor Historian Podcast, as they talk about their podcast's origins and their aim to bring stories from the history of medicine to a wider audience. They discuss how they navigate the balance between humor and respect when discussing dark topics in medical history. They also touch on the significance of humor in medical settings and how it can help patients relax and learn. Looking for something specific? Here you go! 00:04:46 Humor in medical history podcast. 00:06:03 Importance of questioning medical traditions. 00:12:17 Medical advances come from failures. 00:18:00 History of medicine is flawed. 00:25:21 Medical history is fascinating. 00:25:27 Eating dead bodies in history. 00:34:07 Inspiring stories of perseverance. About The Poor Historians Podcast! “One dreary, cold winter night, Aaron called up Max and twisted his arm to go out for a drink. Over some delightful cocktails, the two former English-majors turned doctor bemoaned a perceived distance from their former creative selves. The path through medical school winds far away from the liberal arts ethos. Science and rationality replaced arguments about poetry and literature. Aaron wanted to start a creative project and that fateful night became a brainstorming session. Max, being a self-described podcast addict, brought up the idea of starting a show. Aaron was convinced and the gears started to turn. Though neither of them knew which way a microphone was supposed to face, they decided to forge ahead as one does in the 21st century, by Googling how to podcast. It's not clear how Mike became aware of the project. Since he's a purveyor of calculus-based physics one might assume he'd built a device that enables him to hear thoughts. One shift, while Aaron and Max were working alongside him in the emergency room, Mike leaned in and offered to join the show. The originators were momentarily skeptical but once Mike pulled a guitar out of nowhere and started strumming the theme song it all came together. From thenceforth, the Poor Historians Podcast was careening towards reality. The idea of traveling through the stories of medical history was natural. Their work as physicians is built on the generations before that fumbled their way through medical science. With a deep and varied well of subject material to draw upon, coupling their empathy and humanity with well-cultivated senses of humor, Aaron, Max and Mike, became the Poor Historians Podcast. The misadventures thus began.” Find and follow their podcast here. Did ya know… You can also be a guest on our show? Understanding Mental Health in Medicine with Dr. Robert McCarron
This episode is sponsored by Charm Economics. In this podcast episode, Dr. Robert McCarron discusses the urgent need for improved mental health training for primary care physicians and specialists. As the founding director of the UC Davis Train New Trainers Primary Care Psychiatry Fellowship, Dr. McCarron aims to expand access to mental healthcare delivery, emphasizing the importance of addressing both physical and emotional pain in patients. The episode covers three key components of treatment: therapy, medication, and whole person care. Dr. McCarron advocates for empowering patients in decision-making and planting the seed for treatment, rather than pushing them into therapies they may not be ready for. He provides an overview of commonly used antidepressants like SSRIs and SNRIs and highlights the challenges of finding therapists due to the shortage of psychiatrists and insurance complexities. His training program equips primary care providers with brief psychotherapy skills, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing, to initiate treatment while patients wait for specialized care, ensuring better mental health support overall. This grant aims to establish a comprehensive "Med Psych" curriculum that can be adopted by other primary care practitioner training programs, reflecting his dedication to enhancing mental health training in primary care.
