90% Mental, 10% Physical | Kim Morrison
#147 This week, my lovely guest is Kim Morrison with a conversation which centres mostly around self-love. Kim is a five times best-selling international award winning author, a facilitator and Health and Lifestyle Educator who in 1983, set a world record as the youngest female to run 100miles in less than 24 hours. Kim has lived an amazing life and has had her fair share of trauma. But what I found fascinating and highly motivating, was how she overcame those difficulties and fostered self-love instead of the scars. In this episode we cover her story including why she lives by the ethos that success is 90% mental and 10% physical. So, if you have ever struggled with pushing yourself to accomplish something, or if you ever were overcome by the fear of failure, then this episode can surely be helpful to you. About Kim: Kim Morrison is an author, speaker, facilitator, and a health and lifestyle educator. In her own words, she helps people fall in love with themselves. Her journey and all she has accomplished to date has all stemmed from her unwavering self-belief and her deep understanding that you must also take care of yourself first and foremost. Kim set a world record as the youngest female to run 100miles in less than 24 hours in 1983. Cliff Young was her mentor throughout and still to this day lives by his ethos that success is 90% mental and 10% physical. She has used her running story as a direct metaphor for life – riding the highs, hitting the walls, pushing through the pain barriers, crossing the line and never, ever giving up! Kim is well respected on the speaking circuit and has programs that focus on personality profiling and as well as leadership, teamwork and going the distance. Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art | James Nestor
#143 Have you ever been curious about the way you breathe? Or even about your breath itself? Generally, we all go through the motions of inhaling and exhaling everyday with little to no thought. We don't notice our breath unless we're not breathing! But as you will hear in my conversation this week with the amazing James Nestor, there are so many health benefits that come from breathing correctly. James is a science journalist who has written for the Scientific American, the Outside Magazine, National Public Radio, The New York Times and more and in this episode he is here with me to discuss his newest book Breath: The New Science of Lost Art and the importance of our breath in maintaining our mental and physical health. If only more of us knew how to breath correctly we would not need to rely on many medications and alike. So, if you are interested in the breath and breathwork, or if you are a mouth-breather, this one is for you. About James: James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside Magazine, The New York Times, The Atlantic, National Public Radio, Surfer's Journal, The San Francisco Chronicle, and more. He spent the last several years working on a book called Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. His book explores the million-year-long history of how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly and why we're suffering from a laundry list of maladies because of it. He ended up traveling the world in an attempt to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. He discovered that the answers weren't found in pulmonology labs but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of Sao Paulo. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. www.mrjamesnestor.com Key points with time stamp: James's work in his own words (2:29) The reception of James's book, Breath, and the effect of the book on James (3:17) How did James first enter the field of Breathwork? Superhuman: Making The Invisible Visible | Caroline Cory
#140 This week, I am here with the amazing Caroline Cory. Caroline is an author and the founder of the OMnium Method™. She also recently directed and produced a mind-blowing documentary called Superhuman: Making the Invisible Visible, which is based on the incredible experiences of individuals with extra-sensory powers that seem to defy the laws of physics known to us today. This conversation with Caroline is particularly interesting because we as modern humans have become so familiar with the way we feel and think and with our bodies, that we have just accepted that to be the way things are. This episode aims to tell you that that should not necessarily be the case. We can see and be connected to the world with more than our five senses and we are able to do more than we give ourselves credit for. So, this week's conversation will hopefully enable you to become more empowered, confident, and to live with less fear. About Caroline: Caroline Cory is a futurist, a visionary author and the founder of the OMnium Method™. Even though Caroline completed graduate studies in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy, most of her knowledge and deeper awareness came about through direct experience, which she talks about in her books and courses. Caroline's encounter with the worlds of Consciousness, Energy Medicine and Spirituality started at the early age of 5 when she spontaneously began to perceive various forms of subtle energy. With time, her ability to perceive and discern subtle energy with precision allowed her to identify what Source Energy really is. She could experience and understand more deeply the cosmic roadmap and the structure of consciousness, the multi-dimensional configuration of the human body and mind as well as the construct of earthly reality. Because Caroline's own deeper awareness and consciousness expansion happened mostly through direct experience and beyond the textbooks, the OMnium Method™ of Learning and Healing is also based on a unique form of experiential methodology. In healing, this method raises the cells' vibration through resonance, which in turn allows the cellular DNA reprogramming and the healing to occur organically. www.omniumuniverse.com Key points with time stamp: Caroline's work in her own words (3:43) What is energy medicine? Measuring Brain Changes During Mystical Experiences | Dr Andew Newberg
#139 This week, my amazing guest is Dr. Andrew Newberg. Andrew is a neuroscientist who studies the relationship between brain function and various mental states. He is a pioneer in the neurological study of religious and spiritual experiences, a field known as "neurotheology." His research includes taking brain scans of people in prayer, meditation, rituals, and trance states, so he can better understand the nature of religious and spiritual practices and attitudes. This episode is incredibly interesting because we discuss a rather new, but highly crucial, field. It's amazing to see how religion and science can come together and even explain each other. How do we as humans have all these contradictory perspectives that can make us even go to war against each other? Are the brains of people who have undergone mystical and or spiritual experiences different than those who have not? How do we even know if we've gone through a spiritual experience? Are you really sure of what you believe in? Why is that? These are only some of the deep and important questions we try to answer in this episode as we try to figure out ways to bring us all together as humans. About Andrew: Dr. Andrew Newberg is the director of research at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and a physician at Jefferson University Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine and nuclear medicine. Andrew has been asking questions about reality, truth, and God since he was very young, and he has long been fascinated by the human mind and its complex workings. While a medical student, he met Dr. Eugene d'Aquili, who was studying religious experiences. Combining their interests with Andrew's background in neuroscience and brain imaging, they were able to break new theoretical and empirical ground on the relationship between the brain and religion. Andrew's research now largely focuses on how brain function is associated with various mental states—in particular, religious and mystical experiences. His research has included brain scans of people in prayer, meditation, rituals, and trance states, as well as surveys of people's spiritual experiences and attitudes. He has also evaluated the relationship between religious or spiritual phenomena and health, and the effect of meditation on memory. He believes that it is important to keep science rigorous and religion religious. Andrew has also used neuroimaging research projects to study aging and dementia, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, depression, and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. www.andrewnewberg.com Key points with time stamp: Andrew's work in his own words (4:39) What is Neuro-theology? (6:18) How does neuro-theology deal with our biases? (9:10) Are religion and science coming together? (11:27) How did Andrew start in the field of neuro-theology? The Myth of Normal | Dr Gabor Maté
#138 This week, I am here with the amazing Dr. Gabor Matéand a conversation about trauma, childhood development, and Ayahuasca and its effects on the body and mind. As an added bonus, Gabor also breaks down Donald Trump which was absolutely enlightening to hear. This episode is close to my heart as we discuss my effect on my new-born daughter Ava, and parents' effects on their children's development in general. Gabor beautifully explains how all the ideas we have as adults, were shaped as babies. To quote Gabor, "ideas are secondary, and an emotional stance is primary." So whether you are a parent yourself, or just wish to know the origins of your thoughts and beliefs, give this episode a listen and let us know what you think. About Dr. Gabor: Dr. Gabor Maté is a renowned speaker and bestselling author, highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics including addiction, stress and childhood development. Rather than offering quick-fix solutions to these complex issues, Dr. Maté weaves together scientific research, case histories, and his own insights and experience to present a broad perspective that enlightens and empowers people to promote their own healing and that of those around them. After 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience, Dr. Maté worked for over a decade in Vancouver's Downtown East Side with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness. He is also the bestselling author of four books published in over twenty-five languages. His book on addiction received the Hubert Evans Prize for literary non-fiction. For his ground-breaking medical work and writing he has been awarded the Order of Canada, his country's highest civilian distinction, and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver. www.drgabormate.com Key points with time stamp: Gabor's work in his own words (5:16) When do we start influencing our children?
