Top 25 Bits of Wisdom I've Gathered in My First 48 Years-The Birthday Special
So Sunday February 19th I turn 48. I don’t like birthdays. They are simply a reminder I’m not as young as I feel. However, they are a time to reflect on what has transpired thus far in one’s life. Here’s a little of what I’ve learned.
You will survive almost every tragedy that befalls you
You DON’T have to try to make people like you. Just be the type of person it’s easy to like
It takes more energy to hate than to forgive
You will never have enough money to do all the things you want to do
True joy comes from experiences not things
Developing skills and pursuing activities that make you a better person but no money at all are indeed worthwhile
Loving with full abandon is the surest way to keep your spouse happy
When cooking a steak, trust the process. Don’t check the meat every minute. Find the time and temperature that works and trust the process
People will always disappoint you. They’re human. That’s what humans do
It’s okay to be a nobody in the world’s eyes. What matter is being a somebody your wife and children can depend on
“He who conquers his mind conquers the world.”
Contentment is the brass ring not the brass ring
Age is in fact just a number. How you feel is what matters most
Stay active. It’s magical how amazing being healthy feels
Not drinking alcohol is awesome
If you smile at the world, more times than not it will smile back at you. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true
Divine appointments are real. I’ve had more than I can count
Managing the distance between action and reaction can change everything
Trying to control others is pointless. You can only control yourself
You don’t need nor can explain the actions of others. Leave it to them. You are only accountable for your own actions
Apologize quickly
Being a good listener is far more important than being a good talker
It’s ok to keep your opinion to yourself
It’s ok to disagree with people just do it respectfully
Like C.S. Lewis said, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”
I’m sure there’s more. After all, it’s been nearly half a century. However these are 20 of the main lessons I’ve taken from life so far. I can wait to see what the next 48 holds.

Cold Exposure-What are The Benefits? How Cold? Will It Make Me Lose Weight? How Often? Is There A Downside? What Does Dr. Andrew Huberman Have to Say?
Cold Exposure-What are The Benefits? How Cold? Will It Make Me Lose Weight? How Often? Is There A Downside? What Does Dr. Andrew Huberman Have to Say?
Why all the fuss about cold plunging and thermogenesis
If you’re like most people, the thought of plunging into cold water might make you shiver. But what if I told you that there are some major benefits to be gained by taking a dip in ice cold water? Recent studies have shown that exposure to colder temperatures can actually help improve your overall health and wellness. Here’s a closer look at why all the fuss about cold plunging and thermogenesis.
What is cold plunging and why does it have benefits for the body?
Cold plunging, also known as cryotherapy, is a practice made popular in recent years by the likes of Ben Greenfield. The simple practice consists of taking quick plunges into cold water – ideally no warmer than 50-60°F – which has significant mental and physical benefits. First, blood sugar becomes better regulated after each plunge; this helps to stabilize blood pressure and fight off cravings that cause weight gain. Second, endorphins, or the “feel good” hormones, are released which leads to a more positive energy flow and improved focus. Lastly, metabolism is boosted up to nine times normal rates due to the body’s approach towards keeping it warm; increased calorie burn leads to weight loss over time. cold plunging adds an attractive option alongside more traditional forms of exercise, a truly unique way to enhance any health routine.
How does cold water therapy help with thermogenesis and weight loss specifically?
Cold water therapy is becoming increasingly popular as a natural way to support weight loss. Not only can it boost the metabolism and rev up thermogenesis, but it also helps burn excess fat through specific physiological reactions. When cold water enters the body, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in and sends signals to fat cells, which leads to burning of stored fats for energy. Additionally, the sudden increase in metabolic activity raises core body temperature, which then increases thermogenesis. Because these processes require additional energy from the body’s reserves, this form of therapy can be very helpful with natural weight loss over time.
Are there any risks associated with cold plunging, and how can they be avoided?
Cold plunging can offer a range of health benefits from reducing stress to improving blood circulation, however, it is important to be aware that there are some risks associated with this practice. If you’re not taking the necessary precautions you may increase your chances of developing cold-related illnesses or injuries such as hypothermia and muscular strains. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, it is important to acclimatise yourself before entering the cold plunge by having a warm shower beforehand and starting off with cooler temperatures. It is also recommended that new cold plunge participants have someone nearby in case of any complications which may occur. With these precautions in mind, you can safely enjoy all the health benefits that come along with this invigorating pastime.
What are some other benefits of cold water therapy that people may not know about?
Cold water therapy has long been praised for its pain-relief abilities, but there are many more benefits to the practice than initially thought. Cold water therapy can also improve circulation and prevent inflammation, reduce stiffness in muscles and joints, stimulate your immune system, slow down aging process due to its anti-inflammatory properties, and even decrease depression by releasing endorphins. And if you’re looking to burn some extra calories without putting too much strain on your body, cold water immersion can help to boost your metabolism. In essence, cold water therapy is a versatile health practice with numerous mental and physical benefits that can easily be incorporated into anyone’s lifestyle.
How can someone get started with cold plunging if they’re interested in trying it out themselves?
If you’re interested in trying out cold plunging then the best place to start is ice barrel ice showers. Many ice bath experts believe this to be the most beneficial form of cold bathing, as it can provide a huge therapeutic effect and even reduce inflammation. Another great way to get started with cold plunging is just going for regular walks in the wintertime. Not only will this invigorate and energize yourself, but you’ll also slowly begin to increase your tolerance for colder temperatures and condition your body over time. Lastly, if you don’t mind being half naked in public (at least until you become more used to ice bath temperatures) then try visiting a nature hotspot — like a cold river, pond or beach — during colder months and just jump right in!
Overall, cold plunging has a lot of benefits for the human body that range from improving physical health to aiding in weight loss. It’s relatively easy and safe to do, so if you’re interested in trying it out yourself, there are plenty of resources available to help you get started. Have you ever tried cold therapy? What were your results?

How to Buy A Small Business-A Few Things Everyone Should Know
It was 2003. I had spent my first 6 years in the business world job hopping through corporate America and was suddenly miserable beyond belief. I had a great job with one of the largest corporations in the world. All I had to do was keep my head down, work hard, and I would eventually be an executive. Yet, I was miserable.
I wanted something more. I wanted a life. I wanted to own and operate my own small business. That’s when I set out to purchase a business. I was 28 and didn’t know so much as the first step to take. All I knew was I wanted out of the corporate grind and wanted to enter the world of entrepreneurship.
I learned a lot during the year I purchased my company. I learned most deals die before they succeed. I learned it can be an emotional roller coaster. I learned you don’t have to have a lot of money to buy a business.
All you need is a willing seller, a compelling story as to why you are the right buyer and an ability to convince the seller they will get their money. That’s what I did. You can read about the entire experience in my book ‘Push Play: Taking Your Life Off Pause’ where I document my escape from corporate America. I give the good, the bad and the ugly of the whole experience.
Here are some basics of purchasing a small business. While every deal is different, there are some universal practices to buying a business. The one thing I advise all my advisory clients who want to buy a business is this-make sure you really want to be a small business owner.
Often it sounds better to be an entrepreneur than the reality of actually being one. I always use the analogy of when I decided I might want to buy a Harley Davidson Sportster. I borrowed a friend’s and went to our church parking lot to ride it for the first time. I laid it over inside of 2 minutes. I never got on a bike again. The thought of riding a Harley was much better than the reality.
That said, let’s say you have already flipped the switch in your mind. You are an entrepreneur and want to buy a revenue stream. Good for you. Let’s talk some basics.
As an entrepreneur, you always have to be on the lookout for new opportunities. One way to do this is to purchase an existing business. This can be a great way to get your foot in the door of a new industry or market, and it can also provide some instant revenue. Here are three easy steps to follow when purchasing a business: (1) due diligence, (2) negotiation, and (3) financing. Let’s take a closer look at each of these steps.
Research the business you want to purchase and make sure it’s a good fit for you
Purchasing a business is an exciting but risky undertaking. The sales process often requires salesmanship as owners are looking to maximize the sale price, while buyers must practice patience to keep their objectives top of mind without being taken advantage of in the deal. When considering a business, prospective buyers should be sure to communicate with current and past owners to gather certain key pieces of information that can help determine if it is a good fit or not; things like financial performance, customer satisfaction ratings, and reputation within the industry. Exploring these potential risks can help minimize getting into trouble down the road if salesmanship outpaces communication too much during the purchase.
Find out how much the business is worth and get financing in place
When determining the worth of a business, family, friends, and self-investment through 401(k)s can be great sources of finance. Banks can also be a great option when looking for financial support. Banks tend to have more in-depth knowledge and experience with business investments, so it is wise to do proper research before making a decision on where to best allocate funds. Doing this will ensure that financing is attainable and will give the business the best chance of success.
Negotiate the purchase price with the seller and close the deal
Negotiating the purchase price with the seller is one of the most important stages of sealing the deal. It requires salesmanship, relationship building, and a certain finesse which make it complex in nature. Making sure you are both on the same page and understanding each other’s opinions requires respect, thoughtfulness and a good personality in order to facilitate the transaction. Negotiating a sale can be difficult but if done right, can be just as rewarding as closing it.
If you’re thinking of buying a business, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, do your research to make sure the business is a good fit for you. Second, find out how much the business is worth and get financing in place. Finally, negotiate the purchase price with the seller and close the deal. By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to owning a successful business. Good luck!

Lessons in Living Longer-Finding Your Life's Purpose
I don’t just want to live longer. I want to live longer and healthier. I want to be challenging Peter Attia at the Centenarian Decathlon. I want to play with my great great grandkids. Therefore, I want to find all the ways to hedge my bets to that end.
One thing I’ve discovered in my research on longevity is that having a life’s purpose is key to longevity. I study by the NIH conducted in 1973 found that those who could name their purpose in life were twice as likely to live longer than those who could not.
My life’s purpose is to improve always in all ways. It’s to become the best version of myself so that I’m the best father, husband and member of my community possible. I want to inspire others to be the best version of themselves so that the world will be a happier and more joyful place.
What’s your purpose? We all have one whether we know it or not. Mark Manson says one of the best ways to know your purpose is to look toward those things that when you do them you forget to eat or poop.
A key to finding your purpose is getting over yourself. Move your ego aside. Stop worrying about being important. Worry about being passionate and mission focused. Let your happiness, joy and performing your best as a human become of utmost importance. Don’t focus on what others think because I have a secret for you. They aren’t thinking about you anyway. If you are a failure or you are a great success, they don’t give a sh**. They have their own fears, problems and ambitions. They don’t have time to think about you.
Take time to discover your life’s purpose. I’m going to be doing a 12 part series on living longer in The Vitruvian Letter. I hope you’ll check it out. This is my weekly newsletter where I document the things I’ve learned and executed to improve always in all ways. You sign up HERE.

Bill Maher, Jordan Peterson, Konstantin Kisin and John Kerry Walk Into a Podcast-Saving the Planet or Killing Poor People? The Climate Activist Conundrum
There have been some interesting discussions around climate change recently. It appears in the religion of ‘Woke’ an entire denomination of the faith has broken out-let’s call them ‘The Climatists.’
They mean well. They really do. How could anyone bent on saving the planet have anything other than good intentions? However, as is often the case with ‘good intentions’ there is a the risk of the cure being more harmful than the disease.
In this episode I incorporated the help of some modern luminaries to give texture to the discussion of saving the planet. Don’t worry. It’s not some anti-activist conservative rant nor is it some tree hugging sermon on why more people need to die and less be born.
It’s a look at the ‘other’ side of the climate debate that rarely gets discussed. In the race to save the planet few people take a close look at what trying to decrease the temperature of Earth 100 years from now will do to the least among us today. Worst yet, they know what it will do and don’t care.
I contend the climate debate is not so much a red vs. blue or liberal vs. conservative argument as it is a have vs. have nots, rich vs. poor, developed country vs. undeveloped.
I hope you enjoy, and maybe at least among my audience it will lead to a more nuanced discussion of this very important subject. Let’s improve our discourse always in ALL ways!
Cheers,
Jason

Fighting The Resistance-Words of Wisdom From Steven Pressfield
onday Mission-Quit Telling Yourself What to Do All the Time. Instead, Ask
The ‘resistance’ is a self inflicted sabotager that can keep us from answering our life’s highest call. I’ve fought it many times. I had to fight it to bring you this blog entry and podcast. It never goes away.
What is the resistance actually? I don’t think anyone can say. Maybe it’s satan. Maybe it’s the universe just messing with us. While we can’t necessarily give it a face we can certainly see its shadow.
It’s when you don’t do the thing you really want to do because others might think ill of you. It’s not pursuing your highest calling because you might fail and be left in shambles. To avoid our call we let things like time, talent, the views of others sabotage us.
The sad thing is these things all exist only in our head. Life has enough boundaries, roadblocks and obstacles. Don’t make life even more difficult by creating resistance in your own mind.
I first learned of the resistance from author Steven Pressfield in his book ‘The War of Art.’ It’s a fantastic read I recommend to any would-be creative or entrepreneur. He discusses in great detail what the resistance is as well as how to slay it.
Pressfield has become somewhat of a virtual mentor of mine, and I’m thankful to learn his teachings and glean his wisdom. I hope you enjoy this installment of the JWS ‘Best Friday Ever.’

What Do You Do To Pull Yourself Out Of A Funk?
There are times I just don’t want to do anything. This is especially prevalent at times I’ve been taxing my brain for extended periods of time.
Today I didn’t want to produce an episode of the podcast. I’ve been working on my course, Massively Transformative Habits (MTH), and it has been breaking my brain.
So this morning I sat down to journal, and it ended up being like a sad note. I was just whining to my journal. What to do? Well, I decided to go for a state change. I got up, went over to the podcast booth and cranked out an episode on the subject.
I wanted to see if this would be the state change that would get me on track. Guess what. It did. It was a game changer.
What do you do when you find yourself spiraling? In this episode I try to give a real life in real time example of changing your state to de-funk.

"The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban: How Alabama's Coach Became the Greatest Ever" Author John Talty
So it’s no secret I’m a huge ‘fanboy’ of Nick Saban. I admire anyone who exudes such a long trajectory of excellence, discipline and sustained success. It’s hard to argue Saban is the GOAT of NCAA Football Coaches.
This being the case, I was ecstatic when I heard John Talty had written a leadership book with detailed insight about Saban. I reached out immediately to get him on the show. I’m so happy I did. This was such an insightful conversation about the Crimson Tide head play caller.
People like Nick Saban often reach a status of awe it can get somewhat exaggerated. “Is he really that disciplined?”
In a word-yes. John Talty put the Oracle of Tuscaloosa under the microscope and what he found was a genotype that is made up of hard work, straight shooting candor, long hours, philosophical wisdom and what might be surprising to some-humility.
Love him or hate him, Nick Saban is in a class by himself as a leader and coach. I loved getting to speak to John about his new book.
I hope you enjoy this conversation with John Talty.
Here’s where you can grab a copy of John’s book “The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban: How Alabama’s Coach Became the Greatest Ever.”
