Neurological Safety: Dan Crawford, Founder of C3 "Crawford Coaching Concepts"

Dan’s Story: Dan has a sustained commitment to embracing the following Core Value in his work at Crawford Coaching Concepts: “Make A Difference, TODAY!” His vision for C3 is based upon a foundational belief that each person has the ability to positively impact another person’s life. Dan’s belief in the power of #MADT is rooted in his incredible life story, which includes achieving professional success, a tragic fall to rock-bottom & his hope & redemption journey back to helping others. Dan achieved amazing success, climbing the leadership ranks in Texas K-12 Public Education, serving as a highly regarded 6A Texas HS Principal & College Professor. But behind the scenes, he was falling apart. Dan’s commitment to intellectual growth regressed, his physical health deteriorated, he practiced unhealthy coping habits & consistently turned to intoxicating substances. Eventually, these behaviors led to his rapid, tragic decent to rock-bottom. The result was very public felony arrest, his resignation from his HS Principal & College Professor positions & severely damaging relationships with family & friends. Dan owned his mistakes, realized the importance of changing behaviors & strived to be a good man…But he was lost. Then one day he heard from an old friend, who shared that she had a contact who could possibly help him find a job. The contact called Dan & shared that he could help him find a job, but more importantly the man said, “Listen to me brother, one mistake does not define you & that one mistake does not have to be your legacy.” Dan hung up the phone & realized that call was not about a job, it was the spark of encouragement he so desperately needed to get back on track. In his personal life, Dan recommitted to his faith, became a more involved father, family member & friend, embraced healthy coping skills & committed to living a life free from drugs & alcohol. He also met an amazing woman, Kim, who has supported him as he traveled his journey, & they are now married & have five beautiful children. In his professional life, he got a job as a security guard at an oil/gas drilling contractor & he embraced the opportunity to learn & grow in a new industry. Dan’s fire & passion for learning propelled him to Rig Floorhand, Rig-up Specialist, QHSE Specialist, Performance Improvement Team Specialist & eventually US Performance Improvement Team Manager (L48), all in a matter of 18-months. You Don't Have To Do ANYTHING!

The Power of Choice: Embracing Your Freedom to Decide Hey there, folks! I’ve got some incredible news for you. You don’t have to do anything. Not one single thing. You truly don’t have to. For instance, if you’re still lying in bed, and for some reason, you decided the first thing you’d do is put in your headphones and listen to the Jason Wright show, first of all, thanks. But secondly, you didn’t have to. And guess what? For the rest of the day, you don’t have to do anything. Now, chances are you’re going to get out of bed, brush your teeth, and start your day, but remember, you don’t have to. Each time you get out of bed, eat, or make any daily decisions, it’s because you chose to. You didn’t have to, but you decided to. Now, of course, life throws rules and obligations at us that make us feel like we have to do certain things, like getting out of bed to keep our jobs. Yeah, you should probably get out of bed not to be seen as a lazy schlub. But remember, you don’t have to. You still have the freedom to choose, and I hope you decide to. Moreover, you don’t even have to go to work today. It’s entirely up to you. You get to decide whether or not you’re going to go to work. And if you do, there’s a whole series of decisions that come with it. You can choose to be a beacon of light or darkness in your workplace. Decide whether to greet people with a smile or a frown. You can also decide whether to do just enough to get by or to stand out. Not for promotion or recognition but because you choose to excel. But here’s the kicker – you don’t even have to go home tonight. You can stay at the office if you want to, just sit there until the next morning. But, I highly recommend going home. It’s your choice, and if you decide to go home, why not choose to be fully present in your house with your children and your spouse? You decided to go, so why not decide to be the best version of yourself while you’re there? The point I’m trying to make is that we often take life for granted, going through the motions on autopilot, coasting through the day. But the cool thing is this: You don’t have to do anything. Every single thing you do, from the moment you get out of bed until you go to sleep, is a result of decisions you’ve made. Life is the culmination of countless decisions, both big and small, and they are all decisions you’ve made. That’s what life is all about. It’s the result of a bunch of decisions you’ve made. I want you to remember this because too often, people fall into the trap of thinking that their life is fixed, that where they are now is where they’ll always be. They believe that their circumstances are dictated by the decisions of others, and they’ve simply fallen into their current place. But that’s not true. You and I have agency. We have the freedom to make decisions. Even in the direst of circumstances, people have the power to choose. Remember Victor Frankl, the author of “Man’s Search for Meaning”? He observed that even in the worst circumstances, very few people attempted suicide. They didn’t have to stay alive, but most of them chose to. Why? Because nobody truly wants to die. So, if you’ve decided to be here, to stick around, then why not decide to make the absolute best of it? You’re going to face obstacles, things might take longer than expected, and you might not have everything you desire. But here’s the thing: there are still countless decisions you and I can make every day, no matter our circumstances. Holocaust survivors and prisoners of war decided to keep living, hoping for a brighter day. So can’t we decide to make the best of our freedom, our jobs, our families, and our homes? It’s all up to us to decide. Remember, you don’t have to do anything, but I hope you decide to do many great things. And when you make those decisions, give it your all. Strive to improve your choices, always and in every way. You have that freedom.

Today Is Tomorrow's "Good Ole Days." Make Them The Best You Possibly Can!

Listen til the end: “100 Years” is a song by Five for Fighting, written by John Ondrasik. This song was used in the podcast episode as part of its soundtrack, and we want to thank John Ondrasik for creating such a beautiful and meaningful piece of music that perfectly complemented the content of our episode. We appreciate the artistry and emotion that “100 Years” brought to our podcast, and we hope our listeners enjoyed it as much as we did. Thank you, John Ondrasik, for your contribution to our episode’s atmosphere. What if we are actually living in the “good old days”? I’m someone who has spent a great deal of my life being nostalgic for the past, anxious for the future, and completely disregarding the present. And that’s a problem. As I’ve tried to correct this habit that has plagued me for years, I’ve come to realize something profound: We are currently living in tomorrow’s “good old days.” This realization struck me last night when I attended my first hometown homecoming football game since graduating high school. As I sat there, I couldn’t help but think about how those were supposed to be the days I’d look back on as the “good old days.” But, by being more mindful and present in the moment, I understood that the present time we’re living in right now will one day be our “good old days.” I gained a greater appreciation for the times when I played on that football field, with the stadium filled with cheering fans supporting me and my teammates. Despite the fact that I didn’t particularly enjoy playing football back then, I now look back on those moments with fondness. It was a time of innocence, with far fewer worries and concerns – it was high school, after all. Instead of looking back at last night as some distant, perfect past, I paused to reflect on today. Right now, I have the opportunity to create my own “good old days” or, as I’d like to call them, “battle days.” Moreover, I can integrate the memories of those “good old days” into my life’s rich tapestry, which includes its fair share of good, bad, highs, and lows. It was a refreshing experience to be able to enjoy the football game without longing to go back in time and correct past mistakes. I’ll admit, I’ve been quite hard on myself over the years, always striving for self-improvement and discipline. However, there’s a fine line between holding yourself accountable and having unrealistic expectations of yourself. Last night was fantastic as I watched the Sulphur Springs Wildcats play, alongside one of my best friends from high school, Ryan McKenzie – the greatest guy I’ve ever known. To my buddy, Mario Thomas, whom I hadn’t seen in years, you made the evening even more special. It’s incredible how he hasn’t aged a day since our high school graduation, like a real-life freak of nature. He looks the same, sounds the same – it was absolutely amazing. I’m the kind of guy who’s so focused on moving forward that I don’t often allow myself to revisit the past. I used to be a die-hard nostalgic, constantly yearning for the good old days. In my mind, I thought those times were better and that I had so much life ahead of me. It led to me being hard on myself, thinking I’d made mistakes. Now, I can relish those moments, like I did last night, and realize that life is beautiful if we choose to make it that way. Some of you may be listening and thinking, “This doesn’t resonate with me. I’ve always been this way.” You’re someone who can find the sun even on the darkest days. I envy your ability to do so, and I’m learning to be more joyful and content, thanks in large part to my wife, Jemilynn . She’s encouraged me to be present and focus on what I’ve previously called “experience dividends” – those moments of joy and sweetness that we sometimes neglect due to our preoccupation with bills and responsibilities. After all, if these are tomorrow’s “good old days,” why not make them as wonderful as possible, no matter what’s happening in your life? Remember that we are the curators and designers of our own lives, and there’s no reason to design anything less than a fantastic, remarkable, and beautiful “good old day.” Instead of avoiding those moments in the past that bring up regrets and mistakes, embrace them. This is where you’re supposed to be, and if you don’t like it, you have the power to change it. Wherever you go, there you are, and you can choose to change your circumstances with courage. So, I wanted to take a moment today to share the eye-opening experience I had last night at the Sulphur Springs Wildcat football game during homecoming 2023 – my first in nearly 30 years. It put so much into perspective for me, and I hope you’ll take away a valuable lesson from it. You and I are currently living in what will become “tomorrow’s good old days.” Embrace them and make them as exceptional as humanly possible with everything you have. Authentic Health Friday-Proper Hydration and Breathing

The Dynamic Duo: Hydration and Proper Breathing for Optimal Well-being In the pursuit of a healthy and balanced life, two fundamental elements often take a back seat in our daily routines: hydration and proper breathing. These seemingly simple practices can have a profound impact on our physical and mental well-being. In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of both staying adequately hydrated and practicing proper breathing techniques. We’ll also provide you with valuable tips to master the art of hydration and share a few breathing techniques that can help you feel more relaxed and energized. The Importance of Hydration Water is the elixir of life. Our bodies are composed of about 60% water, making it an essential nutrient for maintaining every bodily function. Staying properly hydrated offers numerous benefits: Regulates Body Temperature: Water helps control your body temperature, ensuring you don’t overheat or become too cold. Flushes Toxins: Adequate hydration helps your body eliminate waste and toxins through urine and sweat. Enhances Cognitive Function: Dehydration can lead to reduced focus and concentration. Staying hydrated keeps your brain functioning optimally. Supports Digestion: Water aids in the digestion process and the absorption of nutrients. Promotes Healthy Skin: Well-hydrated skin appears more radiant and youthful. Prevents Muscle Cramps: Muscles work more efficiently when they are properly hydrated, reducing the risk of painful cramps. Tips for Staying Hydrated Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go to remind yourself to drink regularly. Set hydration goals and track your intake throughout the day. Eat water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables to supplement your water intake. Avoid excessive consumption of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, which can lead to dehydration. Drink water before, during, and after physical activities. The Importance of Proper Breathing Breathing is something we do unconsciously, but conscious and controlled breathing can bring a wealth of benefits. Proper breathing techniques can: Reduce Stress: Deep, rhythmic breathing activates the body’s relaxation response, reducing stress and anxiety. Boost Energy Levels: Oxygen is essential for energy production. Proper breathing ensures efficient oxygen delivery to your cells. Enhance Focus: Conscious breathing can sharpen your concentration and mental clarity. Improve Lung Function: Practicing deep breathing can help increase lung capacity and overall respiratory health. Breathing Techniques Here are a few breathing techniques you can incorporate into your daily routine: Deep Breathing: Find a quiet space, sit or lie down comfortably, and take slow, deep breaths. Inhale for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale for four. Repeat several times to relax your mind and body. 4-7-8 Breathing: Breathe in quietly through your nose for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of seven, and exhale completely through your mouth for a count of eight. This technique can help you fall asleep or calm down in stressful situations. Box Breathing: Inhale, hold, exhale, and hold for equal counts, typically 4 seconds each. Visualize a square to remember this pattern. Alternate Nostril Breathing: Sit comfortably and use your thumb and ring finger to alternately close off one nostril while you inhale and exhale through the other. This technique can balance your energy and reduce stress. Get a FREE copy of Dr Gus’ book https://ebook.drgusvickery.com
