Recovery from Barbie Land: How the Patriarchy Affects Our Mental Health
I discuss the Barbie movie and my thoughts about what the Barbie movie themes, specifically how patriarchy impacts our mental health, how girls often are forced to grow up and give up dolls and their feminine interests in order to be taken seriously and fit in, how fangirls are demeaned and why I am hoping between Barbie and The Eras Tour we are reclaiming our feminine interests this summer and being apologetic about who and what we like. I share my own experiences of girlhood, how I tried to be a “chill girl who likes sports” and how girls and women can inadvertently impose patriarchal ideas on other girls once it's been done to us. I explore the research about how girls’ confidence takes a huge nosedive during puberty compared to boys’ even though girls are more academically strong during this time and the factors that lead to that. I share my recommendations for what you can do if you have a daughter and how you can support her in building her confidence.Resources mentioned:For the Love of fangirls Ted Talk Yve Blake: For the love of fangirls | TED TalkFangirls Article https://www.vogue.in/culture-and-living/content/its-time-we-stopped-treating-fangirls-as-pop-cultures-favourite-punchlineAmerica Ferrera Interview - https://remezcla.com/film/america-ferrera-barbie-says-this-is-big-difference-between-women-men-growing-up/Article from Emily Oster- https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/05/normalize-parenthood-workplace-dont-hide-it/589822/Her book Cribsheet- https://www.amazon.com/Cribsheet-Data-Driven-Relaxed-Parenting-Preschool/dp/0525559256The confidence code for girls & women For girls- https://hcleadershipessentials.com/products/the-confidence-code-for-girls-taking-risks-messing-up-becoming-your-amazingly-imperfect-totally-powerful-self?currency=USD&variant=40187518419082&gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_aemBhBLEiwAT98FMuOa_4wBwaFiZZuyB1DlE5FVvgjmzLPyqGZDN8zXlxgLN7N1Kru3KBoCSLUQAvD_BwE; For adult women- https://www.amazon.com/Confidence-Code-Science-Self-Assurance-What-Should/dp/0062230638/ref=asc_df_0062230638/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312065696873&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16249594419522980635&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012124&hvtargid=pla-493206430457&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=61316180399&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312065696873&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16249594419522980635&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012124&hvtargid=pla-493206430457To suggest a topic, buy my books, or get in touch please visit www.amandaewhite.com.If you are interested in therapy or learning more about my practice, Therapy for Women Center, visit www.therapyforwomencenter.com. Recovery from Barbie: Feminist Icon or Self Esteem Destroyer?
In response to the recent Barbie hype and movie coming out, Amanda breaks down the cultural icon that is Barbie and all the mess and nuance of how she has potentially impacted the mental health and body image of women and young girls. This episode has no spoilers as it is mostly based on Barbie as a doll and icon and what she represents rather than the movie. Amanda shares why she thinks Barbie is a metaphor for womanhood in general and how it is important to critique her but also look at the culture around womanhood and feminism in general. She breaks down up to date research about body image and how Barbie impacts girls' mental health and body image. She also shares limitations she sees in the research.Amanda shares her beliefs on whether she thinks girls should be able to play with Barbie dolls and how she advises parents to deal with their daughters asking for reassurance that they look pretty. As always on this podcast, there is a huge heap of nuance and plenty of contradictions but we love to explore it all here! Tune in next week as she breaks down the movie. Recovery from Therapy Speak: What Jonah Hill Can Teach us About "Boundaries"
Amanda discsusses the Jonah Hill texts that went viral this past weekend and how it demonstrates a broader issue with people not understanding what boundaries are and weaponizing therapy language. She gets into how we lack nuance and default to all or nothing thinking and how this hurts our close relationships. She breaks down what boundaries are and the differences between boundaries, demands and requests. She breaks down the 6 different boundary types and examples for them all. Finally, she discusses how she believes Jonah Hill could have approached this conversation if these truly were the things he needed in a relationship. Obviously this is an incredibly nuanced topic. I am not going into who was right or wrong and I don't think we have enough context to call someone a narcissist so please understand this episode is about what this situation can teach us and the broader issues with therapy speak and therapists on social media.
