Pre-Loved Podcast Trailer
Pre-Loved Podcast Trailer - Season 6 Returns Jan. 17! Hey vintage lovers, I’m Emily Stochl and this is Pre-Loved Podcast -- the show about rad vintage style and guests you’ll want to go thrifting with! On this show, I interview guests from all across the secondhand space about their stories with thrift and vintage. The secondhand space is a big ole world, with just as many stories and angles as the firsthand fashion space. I created Pre-Loved Podcast because there's not another podcast like it to tell these stories -- stories of the best vintage finds, sustainability, mending and upcycling, the ins and outs of selling vintage, all that and more. And now there are over 100 episodes! New episodes come out every Monday! And to follow along with all things thrift, vintage, rad, retro, and sustainable, you can find me Emily Stochl, across the internet as @emilymstochl. And you’ll find even more of this kind of content at my Patreon, Patreon.com/prelovedpod. Find the show at @emilymstochl on Instagram and @PreLovedPod on Twitter. Pre-Loved Podcast: Secondhand in Bangladesh This episode began when I connected with Nurjahan and Raul of the brand, Progoti, and they described the mission of the brand. Progoti is a social enterprise brand that works with secondary materials leftover from the fashion production process, which are sold in a secondhand market in Bangladesh. They are an ethical and sustainable brand that supports the livelihood and craftsmanship of garment makers in Bangladesh, where Nurjahan, the brand’s founder is from. We worked together to create an episode that explores the leftover materials -- the secondary materials -- of the fashion industry in Bangladesh. This episode begins with a bit of background about the fabric wholesale markets in Bangladesh, including the Islampur Market, one of the markets where Progoti sources their material. After that introduction, we move into a conversation with Nurjahan and Raul about the brand and the secondhand fashion space in Bangladesh. Later on in this episode you will get to hear about the day to day of a fabric vendor working in the secondary markets, and an interview between Nurjahan and Ohidul, Progoti’s flannel salesman who works in Bikrampur Market -- the other secondary market where Progoti sources material. Finally, you will get to hear a conversation between Nurjahan and Shahida -- Shahida is one of the sewists employed by Progoti. Both the conversations with Ohidul and Shahida have been generously recorded, transcribed and translated by Nurjahan, an effort which makes this entire episode possible. Their professional backgrounds are very different, and they share a bit about their journey into this space and how it’s looked for them starting Onloan. We also chat about clothing rental in the context of sustainable fashion -- you may have seen a recent study that suggests clothing rental is “less sustainable than throwing your clothes away” -- yeah, we did into the details on that. We also talk about what it was like to launch this business just six months before the pandemic changed the entire world, and how things are looking forward for clothing rental. Pre-Loved Podcast: Alicia Minnaard of Fixing Fashion Today I’m speaking with Alicia Minnaard, a Dutch fashion/textile designer, researcher and co-founder of Fixing Fashion, currently based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. With a positive and problem-solving outlook, Alicia works exclusively with materials that are often considered waste. Fixing Fashion provides tutorials on how to repair and upgrade clothes, helps people proudly design and wear Fixed Fashion, creating a global community, and reduces the amount of waste produced by fashion. It’s a project within the One Army collective -- a collective that aims to solve global problems, like plastic pollution, clothing and fashion waste, and many more. In the early days of the project, Alicia and team went on a research trip to visit Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, and learn from the models of sustainability found in the secondhand market there. In our conversation she emphasized to me the privilege that comes from being able to travel to research models of sustainability in this way, and that she doesn’t take for granted or romanticize the upcycling work being done -- by necessity -- in Kantamanto. She acknowledges that upcycling will not solve all of fashion’s waste problems, without degrowth at the forefront. We did into all of this and more in today’s show -- so let’s get into it! Pre-Loved Podcast: Abby from Boss Vintage Today I’m speaking with Abby Wehrman, who works at Denver’s oldest vintage clothing store, Boss Vintage. I met Abby when I was out in Denver this summer and had the best time talking with her about the super old pieces at Boss. Abby is a history major at Metro State University, and she’s hoping to one day get her master’s degree in Museum Studies to work with textiles. She loves to sew and restore garments, couldn’t be more at home in a vintage store, and we talk about all that and more on today’s show! This is a super fun one and I can’t wait for you to hear it!
