Ep. 292: Myths and Truths About Christmas, with Father John Peck
Today, Father John Peck returns to the show. Fr. John contributed a number of articles for the Orthodox Study Bible and commentary on the Old Testament books of Hosea, Song of Songs, and III Maccabees (perhaps the first Orthodox commentary for this book in existence). He founded Journey To Orthodoxy for helping those inquiring into and seeking contacts within the Orthodox Church and assisting heterodox pastors in their transition to Orthodoxy. He also launched Good Guys Wear Black, a website designed to help men who are discerning a vocation in the Orthodox Church. Fr. John teaches a class on the myths and truths around Christmas. Today, we dive into many of these. With the rise of social media, there's been a ton of bad theology, inaccurate history, pop culture Pagan takes, and just way too much misinformation about Christmas. Was it Pagan? Why December 25th? Can we know when Christ was born? We get into all of this and more. Plus: What might 2024 bring us? More insanity and lies from the regime. We get into that as well! Fr. Ep. 291: Ancient Beauty Amidst Ugly Modernism, with Andrew Gould
This week, a man with a true eye for beauty in art and architecture joins me. Andrew Gould is an artisan and designer specializing in traditional buildings and liturgical art. Andrew has designed dozens of new buildings, renovations, and custom liturgical furnishings. His practice is based in Charleston, South Carolina, and his residential and commercial work is focused within the Charleston Historic District. When designing churches and liturgical art, Andrew works in the Eastern Orthodox traditions (Byzantine and Russian), and his work can be found throughout North America and beyond. We discuss the awful state of ugly modern architecture and how it relates to our souls. When did we lose beauty and love in regards to art and architecture? Do some architects purposely make things evil and ugly? Are beautiful old style buildings too expensive to build these days? Andrew also discusses the importance of making American Orthodox Churches not only beautiful but respectful to and of the local culture. Should we put a strictly Russian-looking Church in the heart of a southern state like South Carolina? We get into all of this and more. Ep. 290: Old World Thinking in a New World Culture, with John Heers
My guest this week is John Heers. John is head of the First Things Foundation. First Things Foundation was conceived as a way to remind wealthy westerners of what gives meaning to life and as a mechanism for serving the poorest among us. As a couple of men working in the aid field, we saw how do-gooders sometimes do profound damage to struggling communities. That damage isn't always physical; things get built when the cash shows up. The damage is spiritual, resulting in local people and local economies becoming dependent on outsiders. Or worse, these communities are violently transformed into what outsiders deem to be "good". We get into the spirit of what John calls "old world thinking" and the Orthodox way to offer philanthropy and aid. At the end, join me in the quiz that I take! Am I more of a new world enlightenment thinker, or do I trend towards the OLD WORLD? Ep. 289: Red Pills, Rainbows, and Psy-Ops, with Jamie Hanshaw
This week, author, podcaster, and Orthodox Christian Jamie Hanshaw joins me. Jamie is well-versed in psy-ops, secret societies, demonic forces in Hollywood, and more. She's also quite articulate and thoughtful as she talks about the red-pilled man-o-sphere and feminism, which are really the same energy, just directed in different ways. Is the ultimate end of the red-pilled men trend to make more homosexual men? What gurus do modern females fall for? What gurus do modern men fall for? We get into all of this and more. My guest this week is the author of the new book, "Lost in TransNation: A Child Psychiatrist's Guide Out of the Madness", Miriam Grossman, MD. Dr. Grossman and I get into the early foundations of what became the widespread child abuse phenomenon of guiding children to transition into the opposite sex. Ep. 286: Not Avoiding Pain and Discomfort, with Father Moses McPherson
This week, my guest is Father Moses McPherson, rector of Holy Mother of God Orthodox Church in Georgetown, TX. He is also the newest contributor over at Patristic Faith. Fr. Moses grew up in a rough area outside of Los Angeles, CA, with a Protestant Pastor as a father. He didn't have a lot of parental oversight and thus got into crime, drugs, and running adjacent with LA gangs. His journey into psychedelics took him down some seriously dark paths. He landed himself in an abusive military boys home where he soon found Christ. He details this wild journey that eventually led him to Orthodoxy. This is one of my deepest, most emotional interviews to date. I know you will be touched by this story. To check out Fr. Ep. 285: The Orthodox View of Israel, with Jim Jatras
My guest this week is my friend Jim Jatras. Jim and I discuss what's going on with Israel, Hamas, and the USA. Many people see this as a "choose one side or the other" ordeal, and it's not that simple. Zionist politicians and pastors have a misunderstanding of what the Christian view of Israel is, and Jim is here to explain the truth about it all.
